Notes for Moses Cockerham

1758 Joseph Gentry sold land to Moses Cockerham, both of Lunenburg County. The 60 acre tract was on the lower side of the Nass? of Reed Creek and on both sides of the Horse pen branch. The tract was part of a larger tract granted to Michal Markey by Sellers Sallants by Williamsburg deed dated June 30, 1743, and then to Joseph Minor, and then to Joseph Gentry. Deed dated August 2. Deed witnessed by Thos Lettus and John Hix. [1] Moses was likely at least 21 years old at this time.

1762 Joseph Gentry sold land to Moses Cockerham, both planters of Lunenburg County. The 68 acres were in two tracts in Lunenburg County on both sides of the horspen branch and were part of a 350 acre tract previously patented in 1743? to Michal Mackey. Deed dated February 2. Deed witnessed by Thomas Potters, Francs? Barnas? [2]

1763 Moses Cockerham sold land to Joshua Winfield. The 128 acre tract was in Lunenburg County on both sides of Horsepen Creek, Turkey pen Branch, Blackwell's line, and Joseph Gentry's line. Deed dated February 10. Signed by Moses Cockerham. Witnessed by Agness Gentry. [3]

1769 Moses Cockerham, planter of Mecklenburg County, sold land to Jonathan Patterson Sen. The 200 acre tract was in Lunenburg County on the north side of the north Maherrin river near John Hawkin's line, Thomas Hawkin's line, Philip Cockerham's line, Jonathan Patterson Jr. Deed dated December 10. Elizabeth, wife of Moses Cockerham, relinquished her right of dower. [4]

1780 Moses Cockerham received a land grant of 300 acres on Little Fish River from the state of North Carolina on April 3. [5] [6]

1791 Moses Cockerham received a land grant of 300 acres on Little Fish River from the state of North Carolina on December 20. The land was entered on February 19, 1779. [7]

1800 Moses Cockerham lived in Salisbury Twp, Surry County, North Carolina in a household with males: 2 (16 thru 25) and 1 (45 and over); and females: 1 (16 thru 25) and 1 (45 and over). [8]

1810 Moses Cockerham lived in Surry County, North Carolina in a household with free white males: 1 (10 thru 15) and 1 (45 and over); and free white females: 1 (16 thru 25) and 1 (45 and over); and 1 slaves. [9] David Cockerham was listed adjacent.

1815 The estate of James Cockerham [perhaps a son] was recorded in Surry County, North Carolina. [10]

1816 Moses Cockram dated his will on February 25, 1816 in Surry County, North Carolina. The will named wife Elizabeth, son Moses, deceased son James, grandson William Anderson Cockerham, and daughter Susanna Aubery. The will was dated February 25, 1816 with prove date February 2, 1817. Goforth's genealogy reports [17]:

13. Moses Cockerham 3rd son of John, born in Lunenburg County before 1737. He was in Surry County, North Carolina from 1771 till his death in 1817; married Elizabeth [Last name unknown] born before 1765. Moses's Will was dated February 5, 1816; Probated February 1817. [Vol. $3, 124, File 110-a; to Elizabeth [al] wife, Elizabeth; son, Moses Jr.; Wm. Anderson Cockerham son of my son James deceased, when he comes of age; Daughter Susanna Auberry. Moses C. & Catlett Smith, Ex. date February 25, 1816].

Children:

Moses Cockerham Jr. born 1770; married Martha [Last name unknown] born 1767 and had a son James Cockerham born 1816.

James Cockerham born 1794-1800; died before 1817; married Nancy [Last name unknown] born 1780-1790; died after 1840 in Greene County, Arkansas.

The Emmett Cockrum genealogy reports [18]:

3. Moses Cockerham, 3rd son of John Cockerham, was born in Lunenburg Co. before 1737. He was in Surry Co., N.C. from 1771 till his death in 1817. His wife was Elizabeth, born before 1765. Moses Cockerham's will was dated Feb.5,18l6, and probated February 1817. His principal estate was a gristmill which he willed to William Anderson Cockerham, his grandson, orphaned son of Moses' second son James. The mill was to be operated by Moses' elder son, Moses Jr., until William Anderson Cockerham reached his majority, when it was to be given to him. Apparently the boy and his mother left N.C. and probably the mill remained in his Uncle Moses' hands.
