Notes for John Cockerham

The deeds dated 1758-1763 involving John Cockerham of Lunenburg likely refer to John Senior but could refer to his son John, spouse of Candice.

1758 "An indenture of bargain and Sale between Philip Cockerham of the one Part and John Cockerham of the other Part with a Memorandum of Livery of Seisin thereon indorsed was acknowledged by the said Philip Cockerham and the same are ordered to be recorded." Lunenburg County Court order books, April. [1]

1758 Philip Cockerham and wife Mary sold land to John Cockerham, planter, of Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia. Deed dated March 15. The tract of 150 acres was on the south branch of Meherrin along Thomas Pettus's line, and was part of 400 acres that Philip received a patent for, dated August 16, 1756. [2] Other researchers [3] [4] appear to have described this 1758 deed as a sale of land from John Cockerham Sr to his son Philip, which is incorrect.

1759 "An indenture of bargain and Sale between John Cockerham of the one Part and Minor Young Cockerham of the other Part with a Memorandum of Livery of Seisin thereon indorsed was acknowledged by the said John Cockerham and the same now ordered to be recorded." Lunenburg County Court order books, June 6. [5]

1758 John Cockerham of Lunenburg County made an agreement with son Philip Cockerham that Philip shall have his two negroes Anthony and Tommy during his life to maintain him as long as he lives. Dated October 9. Witnessed by Thomas Potter, Obidiah Hooper, and William Brang? [6]

1759 John Cockrum sold land to Minor Young Cockrum on January 3. Both were of Lunenburg County, Virginia. The 150 acre tract was adjacent to lands of Philip Cockrum, Potter, and Wilson. "only to have as much ground as he can tend himself." The tract of 150 acres bounded the line of Philip Cockerham, [C/P]otters? line, the new road, the old road leading to Wilsons ford. The deed was dated January 3 and was witnessed by William Law, Philip Cockerham, John Chandler, and Thom Potter. [7]

1759 "Articles of Agreement between John Cockerham of the one Part and Philip Cockerham of the other Part were acknowledgted by the said John Cockerham and ordered and now recorded." Lunenburg County Court order books, July 3. [8]

1763 John Cockerham of Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia, gave a gift of three head of cattle to his cousins Penelopy and Candish, children of Minor Cockerham deceased, to be held by their mother Maryan Cockerham. Dated September 3. [9] We have assumed that John was a brother of Minor. Note that niece Candish might be named after John's wife, Candice.

John Cockerham married Candace. [10]
