Notes for Holloway

We are researching John Holloway, spouse of Mary Pharo (1681-1749). Several researchers name Thomas Holloway and Gartery [Gertrude?] as the parents of John Holloway, based on the baptismal records cited below. Thomas and Gartery were Quakers, of Frome, Somersetshire, England, and had a child John. We seek further documentary evidence about the possible parents of John Holloway, spouse of Mary Pharo.

1676-86 The births of Sarah, Thomas, James, qnd John, to Thomas and Gartery Holloway, were recorded at the Friends meeting records at Froom [Frome], Somersetshire, England. [Photocopy, Holloway birth records at Frome, England (bottom half).] [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] The birth of Gartery was listed on the next page. [6]

1677 "Sarah Holloway the daughter of Thomas Holloway and Gartery his wife was born at Froom on the second day of the twelfth month one thousand six hundred and seventy six." [February 2, 1677] [7]

1679 "Thomas Holloway the son of Thomas Holloway and Gartery his wife was born at Froom on the ninth day of the twelfth month one thousand six hundred and seventy eight." [February 9, 1679] [8]

1680 "James Holloway the son of Thomas Holloway and Gartery his wife was born at Froom the tenth day of the eighth month one thousand six hundred and eighty." [9]

1686 "John Holloway the son of Thomas Holloway and Gartery his wife was born at Froom on the third day of eighth month one thousand six hundred and eighty six." [10]

1689 "Richard Holloway the son of John Holloway was born at Froom on the first day of the first month one thousand six hundred and eighty nine." [11] [12]

1695 The death of Sarah Holloway, daughter of Thomas and Gartery Holloway, was recorded at the Friends meeting records at Froom [Frome], Somerset, England. [13]

1696 "Gartery Holloway the daughter of Thomas Holloway and Gartery his wife was born at Froom on the seventeenth day of the fifth month one thousand six hundred and ninety six." [14] [15]

1711 James, son of Thomas and Gartred Holloway, was baptized on March 16, 1710/11 at age 28 at St John the Baptist Church in Frome, Somerset, England. [16]

1718 Gertrude Hollaway and Joseph Norvil were married on February 23, 1717/18 at St John the Baptist, in Frome, Somerset, England. [17]

Research Notes:

1641 John Holway was listed on the Subsidy roll for Roddon, the Hundred of Frome. [18]

1652 Thomas Hollaway, son of Henery and Margret Hollaway, was baptized on March 5, 1651/52 at St. John the Baptist church at Frome, Somersetshire. [19] [20] Other siblings were also baptized.

1652 Gertrude, daughter of Thomas and Jone Horne, was baptized on October 31, at St. John the Baptist church at Frome, Somersetshire. [21]

1655 Gertrude, daughter of James and Jane Parsons, was baptized on December 14, at St. John the Baptist church at Frome, Somersetshire. [22]

1637 Thomas Holloway, son of Thomas and Joan Holloway was baptized on April 11, at St John the Baptist Church in Frome, Somerset, England. [25]

1610 Thomas Holloway, son of Thomas Holloway was baptized on March 10, at St John the Baptist Church in Frome, Somerset, England. [26]

(Benjamin) Holloway may have been a son of Thomas and Gartery Holloway of Frome, born c. 1680. He was a Quaker: see IM Slocombe, "The Bridgwater Court of Record in the Eighteenth Century," Proceedings of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural ... [27] "Hannah Holloway the wife of Benjamin Holloway of Bridgewater was buried on the nineteenth day of the eighth month One thousand seven hundred twenty nine." [28]

Tobias Holloway has been named as a relative. [29]

1715 Tobias Holloway and Tobias Griscom (father-in-law of Tobias Holloway) witnessed the will of Ann Kaighin, daughter of John Kaighin. Will proved 1720. [30]

1716 Tobias Holloway was a beneficiary named in the will of Jacob Badcock, husbandman of Gloucester County. [31]

1719 Tobias Griscom of Newton, Gloucester County, New Jersey died. His will named wife Debora, but not the children. The estate was valued at £127.18.2, as attested to by the widow Debora Griscom. (Tobias Griscom was the father of Mary Griscom, see 1735 entry below). Tobias Holloway made the account. [32]

1720 Tobias Holloway purchased land from Robert Champion in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

1725 Mary Ladd, widow of Samuel Ladd of Gloucester County, was named executrix for his estate in his will.

1727 Tobias Hallaway [sic] was named an executor for the estate of Isaac Willoby of Newton Twp, Gloucester County.

1732 Tobias Holloway married Mary Ladd, widow in Newton Twp, Gloucester County. [33]

1732-36 Tobias Hollwell [sic] was a bondsman for the estate of Jacob Medcalf of Newton Twp, Gloucester County. [34]

1735 Mary, widow of Samuel Ladd and now wife of Tobias Holloway, made another account of the estate of Samuel Ladd, her former husband, showing principally payment to the commissioners of the Loan Office for Gloucester County.

1735 Tobias Holloway, yeoman of Gloucester County, and wife Mary, formerly Mary Griscom, who was executrix of the estate of Tobias Griscom (see 1719 will above), made an account of the estate, which had increased to £278.
