Notes for Frederick Raver

Robert Wolfe is a descendant of John Rivir [1] and Mary Winebrenner. We have assembled these notes for Frederick Raver, who could be the father of John Rivir. However, we suspect that Frederick was not the father of John Rivir based on the lack of DNA evidence. We seek further evidence concerning these potential relationships.

Frederick Raver was born in Pennsylvania, based on the 1880 census record of his son Christopher. [2]

1778 Letters of administration were issued to George Reber and (son-in-law?) Conrad Rühl for the will of Leonhart Reber, yeoman deceased late of Winsor Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Dated August 15. [3]

1783 The children and heirs of Leonhard Reber, late of Winsor Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania, were parties to a deed involving the estate of Leonhard. Leonhard had patented land in Winsor Twp on July 21, 1740. The will of Leonard Reber was dated May 1, 1777. Frederick Reber of Northampton County was among the heirs. The deed was dated April 15, 1783. [4] Many records of Northampton County for this era are not viewable online at FamilySearch, including tax records. [5]

Robert previously suspected that Frederick Rever moved, about 1790, from Berks County to Bedford County, and that the documents listed below in those two counties refer to one person. However, further research suggested that Frederick of Fairfield was of a different family, not shown here.

1786 Fredk Reber was listed on the septennial census in 1786 in Brunswick Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [6]

1786 Frederick Rieber was taxed in Brunswick Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [7]

1788 Fredrich Reber and Johannes Räber were taxed in Brunswig Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [8] [9]

1789 Frederick Rebert was taxed in 1789 in Brunswig Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [10] [11]

1790 Fredk Reber lived in Branswick and Manheim Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in a household with 2 males under age 16, 1 males age 16 and over, and 7 females. [12]

1794 Georg Reber was taxed in Brunswick Twp. [13] I have found no tax records for Frederick or John Reber in Brunswig Twp, Berks County, after 1789. The next records after 1789 are for 1794. The writing is in German script, so perhaps I missed a Raver record (see the 1794 records following those cited for the 1788 listing for Frederick Reber and Johannes Räber). Perhaps Frederick moved to Bedford County in 1790. I have found no deed with Frederick Reber as a grantor in Berks County close to 1790. Did brother George purchase Frederick's land?

1789 Robert has found no tax records for Frederick Raver in Woodberry, Hopewell, or Providence Townships, Bedford County prior to 1791.

1790 Fredrick Rever lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in a household with 1 males under age 16 (John?), 1 males age 16 and over, and 4 females. [14] This appears to contradict the 1790 census record in Berks County, but perhaps Frederick owned land in both places while he was moving and he was listed in both places. He may have initially moved with only the older children, leaving a wife and younger children behind, while the house was being built.

1791? Frederick Raver was listed with a new survey, non-resident, in Hopewell Twp, Bedford County. [15]

1792 Frederick Raver was taxed in Hopewell Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [16]

1794 Frederick Reaver received a warrant, dated on February 27, for 100 acres of land in Hopewell Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [17] [18] A survey showed Wm Piper and John Rinehart as adjacent landholders. [19] A patent for the land was granted to Jacob Way on December 26, 1817. [20] [21]

Frederick Reaver applyes for one hundred acres of land upon the northwest ? of the Raystown Branch of Juniata and on the southeast side of the warrior ridge ajoining land of John Bryant and surveyd line made for lott french and bounded southeast by the ollequechas Ridg and on the waters of John Branch in Hopewell township and Bedford County. We the subscribers two of the justices of the peace in and for the county of Bedford afsd do certify upon the oath of frederick Reaver that the above described tract of land is without any improvement given under our hand this 25th day of Jan'y 1793.

1798 Frederick Raver was listed on the Pennsylvania Direct tax list for Hopewell Twp, Bedford County. [22] He lived in a cabin (16 feet square) with a stable on 100 acres in Providence Twp. James Hamilton was adjoining. [23] Frederick Reaver was assessed in Providence Twp. [24] Frederick Reaver was also assessed in Hopewell Twp. [25] Frederick Reaver was assessed in Providence Twp. [26] Frederick Reaver was also assessed as unseated in Hopewell Twp. [27]

1798 Frederick Reaver was taxed in Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [28]

1799 Frederick Reaver was taxed in Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania for 100 acres of land. [29]

1800 Frederick Rever was listed on the Pennsylvania septennial census for Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [30]

1800 Frederick Reaver lived in Providence and Colerain Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 2 (under 10, perhaps Frederick and William), 1 (10 thru 15, perhaps John), and 1 (45 and over); and females: 2 (under 10, perhaps Christina and Mary), 2 (10 thru 15, perhaps Catherine and Elizabeth), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (26 thru 44). [31]

1802 Frederick Raver/Rever was taxed in Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [32] [33]

1804 Frederick Rever was taxed in Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [34]

1805 Frederick Raver was taxed in Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [35]

1807 Frederick Raver, farmer, was taxed in Providence Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania for 100 acres granted by warrant. [36]

1810 Frederick Reaver conveyed his rights to land, in Hopewell Twp, Bedford County, to Jacob Way, by deed dated August 27, 1810. The deed was mentioned in the patent that Jacob Way received for the land in 1817. [37]

1811 Frederick Rivir was not named on the Providence Twp, Bedford County tax list. [38]

No further records have been found for Frederick Raver of Bedford County, Pennsyvania. He may have moved to Fairfield County, Ohio. However, there is another Frederick Raver, of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania who might have moved to Ohio at this time. John William Raver died in 1777 in Cumberland County naming children Frederick and Christopher in his will, among others. Frederick, son of John William, has documents in Cumberland through 1790. Christopher, son of John William, may be the Christopher who lived in Washington County, Maryland. Frederick of Fairfield, Ohio had a son Christopher. There is no evidence that Frederick of Fairfield County, Ohio had a son John. Robert W has found no DNA matches between descendants of his ancestor John Rivir and descendants of Frederick Raver of Fairfield, Ohio. We seek further information about which Frederick, if either of the above, moved to Fairfield County, Ohio.

1810-1812 Documents for Frederick Raver first appeared Fairfield County, Ohio, about this time.

1812 A land patent, signed by President Madison, granted land to Frederick Raver in Fairfield County, Ohio, section 28, township 15N, range 20W. [39]

1816 Frederick Raver was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. Ludwick Knoyes was the original proprieter. [40]

1817 Frederick Raver Senior and wife Caty sold land in Fairfield County, Ohio, to John Stife. [41]

1817 Frederick Raver was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. Ludwick Knoyes was the original proprieter. [42]

1817 Frederick Raver was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. Ludwick Knoyes was the original proprieter. [43]

1818 Frederick Raver was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. Ludwick Knoyes was the original proprieter. [44]

1819 Frederick Reber was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. [45]

1820 Frederick Raver was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. [46]

1820 Frederick Raver lived in Violet Twp, Fairfield County, Ohio in a household with males: 1 (16 thru 26) and 1 (45+); and females: 1 (10 thru 16) and 1 (45+). John Raver (age 45+) was listed adjacent. Frederick, Henry, Valentine, and Philip Nicodemus were listed nearby. [47]

1821 Frederick Raver was taxed in Fairfield County, Ohio. [48]

1821 Frederick Raver reportedly died at Canal Winchester, Fairfield County, Ohio, on October 15.

1821 Frederick Raver and Elizabeth Myers, wife of William Myers, petitioned the court to set off their part of the estate of Frederick Reber. [49] [50] [51] [52] [53]

Frederick Raver and Elizabeth Myers, wife of William Myers, two of the children and heirs of Frederick Reber dec'd who died intestate bearing real property or estate and children of full age and others, minors, praying that their proportion of said real estate might be set off and assigned to them severally and if appearing to the Court that the petitioners are lawful heirs of the deceased and that the deceased died intestate. … The court ordered that John Donaldson, Elias Spurgeon, and Levi Moore do make partition of the south-east quarter of section 28, township 15 of Range 20 (excepting sixteen acres out of the north east corner of said quarter sold and conveyed by the deceased in his lifetime to one John Stife)[see deed dated 1817] …

1822 The estate of Frederick Reber was indexed at Fairfield County, Ohio. [54] We would like to see copies of these documents. If John was a deceased son of Frederick, then why was John's widow not named as an heir of Frederick? [55]

1825 William Raver purchased the land described in Frederick's 1812 patent in Violet Twp, Fairfield County, Ohio, from Jacob Smith and wife Caty, Frederick Reber and wife Caty, Voluntine Bowers and wife Mary, John Bowers and wife Margaret, Anny Raver, and Christopher Raver. Dated August 29. Signed by Jacob Smith, Caty Smith, Frederick Raver, Caty Raver, Voluntine Bowers, Mary Bower, John Bower, Margaret Bower, Ann Raver, and Christopher Raver. Witnessed by Voluntine Donaldson and John Basel. [56]

1833 William Raver, and Valentine, Philip, and Frederick Nicodemus were taxed in Violet Twp, Fairfield County, Ohio. [57]

1848 A[aron?] Raver, M Raver, and W[illiam?] Raver owned land on the southern boundary between sections 27 and 28, shown of a map of Fairfield County, Ohio. The adjacent lands of T Nicodemus, S. Christ, H. Nicodemus, and F. Nicodemus were in Section 21. Jacob Smith [perhaps the spouse of daughter Catherine?] owned land in section 22. [58]

Research Notes:

Information about Frederick Raver and Catherine Nicodemus of Fairfield County, Ohio and their descendants has been compiled in a genealogy book by the Saylors. [59]

1821 Catherine Nicodemus died in Fairfield on September 30, 1821. We have seen the following note. [60] [61] [62]

she died after her husband, Frederick in the Typhoid Fever epidemic. he died also of the fever in Fairfield county, Ohio. They are both buried in the old Raver cemetery on Waterloo rd., Their sons, William and Christopher are also buried there.

The parents of wife Catherine are not known with certainty:

1759 Catherine Nicodemus [63], daughter of Johannes Adam Nicodemus and Maria Christine, was reported born on March 14 in Lancs, Weisseichenland, Pennsylvania. [64] We seek evidence that the Nicodemus family lived in Berks County around 1780. We have found no land or tax records for Nicodemus in Berks County. Catherine, born 1759 would be only age 14 at the birth of Catherine in 1774.

Catherine could be a daughter of Frederick Nicodemus (1735-1805) [65], who named daugher Catherine in his will. Other children of Frederick Nicodemus lived in Bedford County, where Catherine and Frederick Rivir lived until about 1812.

However, Catherine, daughter of Frederick Nicodemus, was reportedly born in 1787. We currently show Catherine's ancestry based on other researchers, who have suggested different ancestries for Catherine, spouse of Frederick Raver. See speculative notes about the genealogy of Catherine Nicodemus, spouse of Frederick Raver. [66] See, also, Catharine Nicodemus daughter of Henry, married Wilhelm Kraft/Croft. [67] We seek further evidence about the identity of the spouse of Frederick Raver.

1806 Fred'k Raver owned land in Ohio, shown on a map of Range No[rth?] X [ten?], Township No[rth?] II (two?). The river on this map does not appear to agree with the 1848 map. In what county is this located? [68]

Jacob Cowen witnessed a will with Christian Rivir, son of John Rivir (1842). Mary Cowen married Jacob Stoner, the brother of Nancy Stoner who married son John Rivir, Jr. The Cowen family was involved as Rivir guardians and was involved in the partition of the Winebrenner inheritance.

We seek documentation about the marriage of Frederick Raver and Catherine Nicodemus. We show Catherine Nicodemus as the spouse of Frederick Raver based on reports of other researchers, but we are not aware of any documentation to support this relationship. The names of children of this couple have been gathered by other researchers, and agree with the 1825 deed, which likely involves the heirs of Frederick Raver. We seek further documentation about the children of Frederick Raver and Catherine Nicodemus.

Deed index: [69]

Many deeds granted by descendants of Frederick and Caty Raver are indexed in Fairfield County. [70] [71] Other deeds involving Reber/Rever/Ribor, etc are from a different family: [72]

1764 Hans Rever warranted land on Tulpehocken Creek, Heidelberg Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [74] The survey was made for Thomas Davis and shows adjacent land for Andreas Woolf, labeled Lancaster County, dated October 25, 1751. [75] Hans Rever received a patent dated June 9, 1764, for land in Berks County. [76]

1831 The estate of Catherine Reber was indexed at Fairfield County, Ohio. [77] Was this Catherine, the widow of Frederick, or another Catherine? [78] The account is by John Huber for care of Catharine Reber, a school child.
