Notes for John Wickersly

Research Notes:

The first owners of these lands [Broom hall] as a separate estate of whom I have found mention, were the De Wickersleys, some of whom resided here, though it may be presumed that their principal place of abode would be at the village of which they were lords and from which their hereditary name was de rived about ten miles from Broom hall. At that place they were very early settled. The first who used that surname was Richard Fitz Turgis, who in the reign of King Stephen was co-founder with Richard de Busli of the neighbouring abbey of Roche. Robert de Wickersley married Joanna, daughter of Adam de la Roche, son of Simon de la Roche. Thomas Wykersley was returned lord of the manor of Wickersley 9 Edward II, 1315, along with Jordan de Ilde and Richard de Dred. By his last will and testament bearing date 20 May 1471 Roger Wickersley bequeathed his body to be buried in the chapel of Saint Mary within the church of Saint Alban at Wickersley. He died four days after, and was interred according to his directions, the fine flag which covers his remains still existing, having the arms of Wickersley, a fess between three cinquefoils at its four corners."
