Notes for William Tilthe

1396 William Tilthe or Tylthe was named as a legatee and executor in the will of John de Beggebury [Bedgebury] of Cranbrook. The will was written on August 13 and proved the same year on October 10. [1] "To W[illia]m Tilthe, 20 s. ... Exec[utor]s W[illia]m Savage, vicar of Cranbrook, my mother Joan, Nich[olas] Patynden, W[illia]m Tylthe, and to them the residue of my goods."

1406-1407 or 1417-1424 Plaintiffs William Leon and Paulyn Marchaunt, executors of John Standen, of Rye, sued defendants William atte Tylthe and Agnes his wife, of Kent in the parish of Cranbrook, in the Court of Chancery concerning money matters, Kent. [2] [3]

1422 In the Court of Common Pleas in Easter term, plaintiff Walter Chertesey, citizen and draper of London, sued William Tylthe, gentleman of Cranbrook, Kent. Walter Chertesey claimed that William Tylthe owed him £4 17d per a bond. He claimed damages at £4. The bond, dated at St Mary Abchurch, Candlewick Street Ward, London on 12 May 1420 and due 25 December 1420, was shown in court. William Tylthe sought licence to imparl as far as Trinity term 1422. Four pledges were named for the defendant: Adam Bekynden, gentleman of Cranbrook, Kent, John Hoigge, gentleman of Frittenden, Kent, John Hore, gentleman of Brasted, Kent, and William Gilderigge, gentleman, of Herstmonceux, Sussed. [4]

1426-1432 Plaintiffs Walter Coulpepir and Agnes his wife, late the wife of John, son of John de Beggebury, and Thomas Chaundeler, chaplain, sued defendants Robert Walter and William Leeke concerning messuages and land in Goudhurst (Goutherst), Cranbrook, and Hawkhurst, enfeoffed by John, son of Roger Beggebury, Kent. [5] [6] This Chancery case indicates that the 1396 testator was the son of Roger and Joan Bedgebury and that his father Roger had a brother John Bedgebury. The case also suggests that William Tylthe, the executor and feoffee of the 1396 testator, had died by the time of the lawsuit.
