Notes for Groome

We are researching the ancestors of Moses Groome, whose daughter Rebecca Groome married Robert Sanders in 1698.

Research Notes:

There were sons named Moses born to a Groome family in Colchester, Essex County, England:

1590 Moses Groome and Mercye Holdinge were married the xiijth day of this monthe December [1]

1593 Jonas the sonne of Moses Groome of St Mary Magdalen parishe was baptized the xviijth daye [2]

1596 Marye the daughter of Moses Groome of the parishe of St Mary Magdalen was baptized the same daye (thirde day the monthe) October [3]

1602 William the sonne of Moses Groome of the parishe of St Mary Magdalens was baptized the same day (the xxviijth daye) of November [4]

1632 Will of Moyses Groome senior of Colchester, ropemaker, was dated 5 March, 1630 in Colchester, Essex County, England. Wife Mary received three freeholds in St Giles parish during her life, then to son Moyses Groome. Moyses to pay brothers William and Edward. If Moyses dies, then money is to be paid after his decease by Mary now his wife. Son William Groome received two freeholds while alive, then to his wife Mary during her life. If William dies without lawful issue, then the two tenements go to Mary now the wife of John Gowers?. Son Edward received two freeholds in EastStreet in the parish of St James in Colchester. If Edward dies, then the tenements pass to the children of Mary wife of John Gowers. The tenement in the parish of St Mary Magdalene in Colchester to the said Mary my daughter & to her son John Gowers. Mary also to receive the tenement in Moore Lane in the parish of St Buttolphs and after her death to her children other that John. Wife Mary Groome executrix. Fate of creation: 12 April, 1632. [5]

1630 On 3 October, Marie Groome, daughter of William and Marie Groome, was baptized at St Mary of the Walls, Colchester parish, Essex, England. [6]

1632 On 25 November, William Groome, son of William and Marie Groome, was baptized at St Mary of the Walls, Colchester parish, Essex, England. [7]

1633 Moses Groome was Gard. at St Marie Magdalene ville Colcestrie. [8]

1636 On xij of November, William Groome, son of William and Marie Groome, was baptized at St Mary of the Walls, Colchester parish, Essex, England. [9]

1637 On xvij of December, John Groome, son of William and Marie Groome, was baptized at St Mary of the Walls, Colchester parish, Essex, England. [10]

1639 "Deeds of Messuage, once two tenements, with orchard and croft called the Whitehorse (abuttals given), Kelvedon Includes bond bet. John Grant of Kelvedon, yeoman, and Moses Groome of Colchester, collarmaker, 1639." [11] [12]

1640 On xxix'th of March, Moses Groome, son of William and Marie Groome, was baptized at St Mary of the Walls, Colchester parish, Essex, England. [13]

1643 William Groome, eldest son of William Groome, Ten years old, born at Colchester, was admitted as a free scholar to Colchester Grammar School [14]

1646 Moses Groome, only son of Moses Groome, in his 12th year, born at Colchester, was admitted as a free scholar to Colchester Grammar School [15]

1647 John Groome, second son of William Groome 'tomirum opificis', Aged 10, born at Colchester, was admitted as a free scholar to Colchester Grammar School [16]

1658 The will of Moses Groome, collarmaker of Colchester, was dated 5 July, 1658 in Colchester, Essex, England. Probate date 23 December, 1658. Wife Mary the messuage in Relbeden occupied by Nehemiah Wistorke. Son Moses the lands lying in Bromeldy in the said county. Wife Mary land occupied by Rose Priston in Parish of Runwalls in Colchester. Son-in-law William Sloate and his wife Mary. Dwelling of Richard Barton Ootemeale. The will bequeathed £70 to son Moses Groome upon expiration of his apprenticeship with his Master Baldwin. William Whitby, son of William Whitby of Colchester, to receive £3, upon achieving age 21. Wife Mary. Two daughters Mary and Mercy. [17] [18]

1690 The will of William Groome, collarmaker of Colchester, was dated 1 May, 1690 in Colchester, Essex, England. The will named daughter Mary Tye, deceased, and sons William and John. Several grandchildren were named. Probate 10 February 1690. [19]

Genealogy notes for William Groome, at the Maryland Archives, suggest that William Groome, with wife named Mary, was an immigrant to Maryland. The original immigration record, which we have not found, is mentioned along with notes for William Groome, married to Sybil.

The remaining notes are for William and Sybil Groome of Maryland, who were probably not the parents of Moses Groome, based on the 1677 will of William Groome (below).

1677 The will of William Groome in Calvert County, Maryland, dated 3 February 1676/77, named sons William and Richard, daughter Sibill, and wife Sybil. The plantation called Mount Calvert was distributed. The will mentioned a farm in Old England called Ivingoe in the county of Bucks, in controversie in law, the rights of William being defended by his brother Robert. Probate 5 April 1677. The language indicates that there were only three children, all unmarried and under age 21: "My will and testament is that if either of my children should decease as we are all mortal that then his or her part shall remain to the other two. If two should die and one survive then my will is that he or her should enjoy all the part belonging to the other provided they should die in their nonage or before their marriage." [21]

Genealogy notes for Sybil Groome and Henry Jowles, at the Maryland Archives, do not mention a son Moses. [25] [26]

1660-1699 There were many documents and court cases involving William Groome in Maryland. None that we have found mentioned Moses Groome or wife Mary. All of these documents might refer to William Groome, husband of Sybil.

1660 On May 9, William Groome of Calvert County, Maryland, purchased land from William Dorrington. [27]

1665 On 5 April, William Groome purchased land from William Dorrington, merchant of Petuxent, Maryland. [28]

1666-67 On 10 April, William Groome of Calvert County purchased lands from Philip Calvert. [29]

1670 William Groome of Calvert County purchased 300 acres of land from Ninian Beale. [30]

1670 William Groome of Calvert County received a patent and certificate for Calvert Manour, 1000 acres, dated August 4. [31] [32]

William Groome was involved in many court cases. None that we have found mentioned Moses Groome or wife Mary. [33] [34] [35]

1677 Sybill, executrix of Wiliam Groome, remarried Henry Jowles. [36]

There were several court cases involving Sybil, as the executrix of William Groome. None that we have found mentioned Moses Groome [37]:

John Nutt was involved in court actions against Henry Jowles & the executrix of William Groome:

1665 On 25 December, William Groome of Putexen rented to John Nutt. [38]

1678 John Nutt brought suit. [39]

1678 John Nutt of London was summoned by Jowles and Sybil. [40]

1681 William Groome, son and heir under age 21, of William Groome deceased was represented by George Parker and guardians Henry Jowles and Sybill. [41] [42]

1709 Samuel Groom, merchant of London, named brother Daniel Groom, captain of the ship Hester, his lawful attorney. [43]
