Notes for William Reed

The tract of land called "Clark's Inheritance" provides a three-generation link from William Reed to his son, Nelson Reed, and to the children of Nelson Reed. Clarke's Inheritance was also mentioned in documents of the family and ancestors of Rebecca Sanders, the wife of Nelson Reed: see the estate records of James Sanders [1], brother of Rebecca Reed and a land deed of Henry Ridgely [2], an ancestor of Rebecca Reed. Land transactions involving Clarke's Inheritance, prior to the record for William Reed, are listed below, after the timeline for William Reed.

1733 William Reed witnessed the will of Mary Knighton, daughter and heir of James Ellis of Anne Arundel County, which mentioned the Jamesparke tract in Baltimore County on Gunpowder Creek. [3]

1750 James J. Mackall [Marshall, perhaps, see 1756 sale] conveyed to William Reed, of Prince George County, the tract of land called Clark's Inheritance. [4]

1756 William Reed, planter of Anne Arundel County, sold Clark's Inheritance to Arthur Collins. The land had been partitioned on November 21, 1750 by James John Marshall (now of Calvert County) but then of Anne Arundel County and William Reed of Prince George County. [8] [9]

1758 An account was filed for Elenor Reed in Anne Arundel. [10]

1759 John Bond conveyed land to William Reed and his wife Eleanor, widow and executrix of Samuel Lockwood, on November 13. The tract was 500 acres of James Park, in Baltimore County, Maryland. John Bond had previously purchased the land from Samuel Lockwood, but had an ejectment served upon him. [11]

1763 Charles Grahame of Calvert County and Arthur Collins resolved a debt and mentioned "Parcell of Land belonging to the said Arthur Collins situate and being in Anne Arundel County aforesaid being the Dwelling Plantation of him the said Arthur Collins adjoining to the Lands of William Reed and James Sanders Containing One hundred & three Acres of Land be the same more or Less being part of a Tract of Land called Charles [Clark's?] Inheritance together with all and singular the Houses Buildings Orchards & other Improvements thereon with their and every of their Appurtenances". [12]

1766 William and wife Elinor Reed sold part of the tract "West Puddington", then occupied by William Chiffin, to John Reed, for 5 shillings and moving considerations. [13] [14]

1770 William Reed conveyed an enslaved person, Rachel, to his son-in-law Samuel Nichols. [15]

1771 William Reed transferred enslaved persons to William Davis, on April 17, for affection of wife's son-in-law. Witnessed by James Sanders and Thomas Watkins. [16]

1772 The will of William Reed was recorded in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Will Book 39-933. [17]

(Clarke's Inheritance was transferred to William Reed in 1750. None of these people were related to William Reed, to my knowledge.) [35] [36]

1706 On 2 January, Phillip Lynes of Charles County, Gent., and his wife Ann, made an indenture to William Harbert of Charles County, Gent. The Right Honorable Cecillius, Lord Baron of Baltimore granted at the City of St. Mary's on 22 Sep 1665 unto John Clarke a tract of land called Clarke's Inheritance lying in Charles County on the north side of the main fresh run at the head of Mattawoman & Thomas's Creek; commonly known as Nattingee containing 500 acres; 9 Jan 1681 John Clarke signed over this original grant to his brother, Thomas Clarke; 10 Jan 1681 Thomas Clark in open Court in Charles County sold the land to John Godshall of Charles County; 8 Jun 1683 John Godshall sold the land to Phillip Lynes recorded in Charles County records; for 120£ Phillip and Anne Lynes now sell the 500 acres of Clarke's Inheritance now lying in Prince George's County. 1802 George and Anne Magruder Dent sold Clark's Inheritance on the Mattawoman to Thomas Marshall. [40]

Research notes about Riedbourne:

There are documents for William Reid, related to a tract of land in Maryland called Reidbourne. I know of no evidence to link William Reed, who purchased Clarke's Inheritance (see above), to William Reid, who previously owned Reidbourne (see below), except coincidence of time and place, but it is plausible that they are the same person. I have seen no evidence that they are different people.

These notes about Riedbourne are perhaps related to the Reid family of Aberdeen, Scotland (see the notes below dated 1703 and after). [41] [42]

1653 George Reed and John Billingsley had business dealings. [43] [44]

1659 William Reed [Reid] of Aberdeen, Scotland owned a tract of 1000 acres called Readbourne on Chester River near Herring Creek. Alexander Reed, nephew to William, sold the tract in 1721 to William Reid for £130 sterling. A tract called New Seat was also transferred by the same parties. [45] The tract has one of the most interesting colonial mansions in Maryland. [46] [47]

1658 George Reade was named to inventory the estate of William Eltonhead by the Maryland Provincial Court. [48] [49]

1658 George Reade demanded a warrant against William Evans by the Provincial Court. [50]

1659 George Reade and John Reade both claimed land on the Patux't River joining their estates. [56]

1659 George Reade was on a jury that determined that a path by St Nicholas Creek was included in a patent to Captain Cornwallis. [57]

1659/1660 George Reade was on a jury that found several persons guilty of sedition and mutiny for actions on 8 February 1600. Another case involved a theft from the dame of Elizabeth Greene. [58] [59]

1659/1600 George Reade and John Reade were on a jury to assure that a 600 weight of tobacco was received in payment. [60]

1661 George Reade and Alice, his wife, were summoned by the sheriff of Calvert County as witnesses in a defamation case. [61]

1663-64 George Read was named in several Provincial court proceedings. Some involved the estate of Mary Bateman and Resurrection Manor. [62] [63] [64] [65] [66] [67] [68] [69] [70]

1664 The widow of George Read gave testimony to the Provincial Court concerning tobacco owed to Henry Thickpenny. [71]

1666 Captain George Reed [Reid] died in Calvert County, Maryland and was named as the owner of Reidbourne in 1659. [72] [73]

1666 The inventory of Capt George Read was made in Calvert County by John Gittings, William Simes, John Bogus, and Andrew Robinson. Date October 24. [74] [75]

Joan married George Reed, then Robert Tyler, then John Beale. [76] [77]

1668 Land of George Read was adjacent to the Macklinburgh estate at the mouth of Herring Creek on Chester River to the east of Chesapeake Bay. [78]

1674 Joane Reade, widow of Captain George Reade of Resurrection Manor, married Tyler [79]. Minor son George Reid requested that Hugh Johnson be named his guardian [80] [81]

1674 On 20 July, the account of Joane Tyler, widow and relict of Captain George Reade, late of the Ressurection Manner in Calvert County deceased intestate ... for her disbursement & payments ... the administration of the goods ... of the said deceased. 1679 Several tracts of land were described in a Provincial Court Record involving Richard Hill [85] including "one other certaine Tract or parcell of land called Widdower addicon lyeing in Anne Arundell County on the south side of Anne Arundell als severne river in the woods butted & bounded as in the Originall patent beareing date the Eighteenth day of May Anno Dm 1679 Granted unto One Elizabeth Read of Anne Arundell County aforesayd Widow her heires & assignes for Ever is sett forth then sayd to be containeing and layd out for one hundred & thirty acres of land more or less And of and in one other certaine Tract or parcell of land called Reades lott lyeing alsoe in Anne Arundell County betweene severne & south river aforesayd butted & bounded as in the Originall pattent beareing date the fifteenth day of September Anno Dm 1665 granted unto Wm Reed of this province planter his Heires & Assignes for Ever is sett forth then sayd to be containeing and layd out for Fourty Acres more or less."

1685 The estate of George Reade was administered by Wm Comegys of Kent County, Maryland, who married Elizabeth, the sister of George Reed. Thomas Reade was the father of George. Brother William was also named. [86]

1702 William Reid gave testimony in the Anne Arundel County Court for several cases. [87] [88] [89] [90]

1703 John Gandy, mariner of London, suspected that George Reid had left collateral heirs and went to Aberdeen, Scotland and received a deed from Alexander Reed Catlie, the nephew of George Reed. "Allexsander Reid Catlie in Inurury within the Shirefdome of Aberdeene and Kingdome of Scotland and now in North Ferrie of Dunde within The Shirefdome of Forfar and Kingdome foresaid only son Child and Heire of The Deceast Alexsander Reid in Inuerury who was Brother German and of The wholl Blood and heir in Law of the Deceast George Reid Late of the province of Maryland in Americco". The deed was for "That Tract or Mannor of land heretofore lying in Tobot [Talbot] County But now in Kent County called red Burne [Riedbourne] Orriginally Taken Up By The Said George Reid and Surveyed For one Thousand Acres on The South Side of Chester River and Alsoe all other the Messuages Lands tenements and hereditaments of him The Said Alexsander Reid Sittuate Lying and Being in The Severall Countyes of Kent Tobott & Saint Maryes in The Said Province of Maryland". Gandy sold Readbourne to Captain John Hyde and wife Jane Calvert Hyde in 1704. [91] The provincial Court Land Records note that Gandy John deed from Reed Lost in the Stadt house fire before recorded ye night after beginn. [92]

1718 On 15 October, Alexander Reid transferred land, called Readbourne, to William Reed, both of Aberdeen, Scotland. Alexander was "cousen collaterel of hole blood and heir at law" to George Reid, late of Calvert County, Maryland who previously owned the land on the south side of Paxtent River near St Nicholas Creek, near Ressurection Manor (see 1659 land transaction), previously in Calvert county but now in St Maries county. [93] [94]

1718 It is unclear how this note fits in with the other notes about Reidbourne: Alexander Reid, a Jacobite from Alford, Aberdeenshire, was transported from Liverpool to Maryland on Friendship 24 May 1716, settled Reidbourne, Chester River, Calvert County, Maryland. Died intestate 14 October 1718 [95] [96] [97]. William Bladen, the Protestant attorney-general of Maryland, had freed his indentured servant Charles Reid by 1718 and helped him purchase a substantial property in Calvert County, Maryland, which Reid named Reidbourne [98].

1659 "The Laird was the same Alexander Reid "of Newmill and Midclova," whose father was Robert, and he was a younger brother of Mr. James Reid of Bourtie (q.v.). Alexander's son, another Robert, was the Jacobite tenant of Cushnie who was transported. There is a sasine between Robert Lumsden of Cushnie and Robert Reid (brother to Mr. James Reid) on the town and lands of Newmill, 25 Jul 1659." [99]

1721 William Reed, of Aberdeen, gave power of attorney to William Cummings to record deeds related to three tracts he had deeds for. [100]

1721 Alexander Reid sold Reidbourne to William Reid after the death of George Reid, who in 1659 owned Reidbourne, consisting of 1000 acres on Chester River near Herring Creek. Alexander was a cousin collateral and heir to George Reid. New Seat was also sold. [101] [102]

1722 William Reid, a merchant from Aberdeen, settled at Reedburn on the Chester River, St. Mary's county, Maryland, in 1722. [103] [104] [105]

1731 William Reid of Aberdeen, Scotland, merchant, on 22 April 1731, stated that by virtue of deeds executed at Greenock, Scotland, on 13 March 1722, he was the possessor of a tract of land on Chester River called Reidbourne, also tracts called Reid's Point and New Seat in St Mary's County. He gave a power of attorney to William Cummings. [106]

[114][Link.http://genforum.genealogy.com/read/messages/2682.html, genforum notes of Robert Lewis]

1718 "John Waughop married Joan Mackall, d/o George and Ann Mackall, and they were the guardians of George Reid (Read), s/o George Read, Sr. of Calvert County, and Joan (surname unknown), who afterwards m Robert Tyler, and in her 1675 Calvert County, MD will named goddaughter, Elizaeth Combs and entrusted her minor son, George Reid, to the care of George Mackall and John Waughop. In 1680, George Reed, son of George Reed of Calvert County deceased, complained to the provincial court of "the bad usage of him by Mrs Joane Waghob" and was permitted to choose his own guardian (thus at least 14, but still a minor), one Hugh Johnson of Talbot County, Maryland. In 1718 in St. Mary's County, William Combs, Sr. (believed to have been the s/o Enoch I) approved as next of kin the estate appraisal and inventory of one William Read. The name of William Combs' first wife is not known, but before 1730, he was married to Mary Hatton, d/o Thomas and Elizabeth Waughop Hatton." 1757 Joseph Reid, perhaps a relation, was appointed surveyor of the road in Fairfax County, Virginia. [121]

A description of Readbourne reports [122]:

The next plantation below Hallowing Point was Reed, a grant of 200 acres to John Reed, or Read, who was succeeded in ownership by George Reed, probably his son. The same family owned Readbourne in Queen Anne's County, one of the finest estates on the Chester River. The handsome colonial mansion, known as Readbourne, one of Maryland's finest colonial survivals, was built on this tract by James Holliday, who purchased the property from William Reed of Aberdeen, Scotland, an heir of the Reeds. The grantor of the deed of this property is described as the "cousin collateral and heir to George Reed, late of Calvert County.

On the 17th of August, 1732, William Reed, of Aberdeen, conveyed the property to James Hollyday, of Talbot

Readbourne is a registered historical site in Maryland. [123]
