Notes for John Reed

Research Notes:

There are records for John Reed with spouse Sibby/Seborah who died in 1793 and for John Reed who was alive in 1807 with spouse Catharine. Both were named in documents involving Clarks Inheritance and Solomon Groves. Which was a son of Nelson Reed? Note that the 1840 will of Nelson Reed (Junior), son of Nelson Reed (Senior) names several of the children of Nelson Reed Senior, but not John, consistent with the possibility that John had no heirs.

1785-1807 John Reed's father, Nelson Reed, was last taxed in Maryland in 1785 and appeared in Fairfax County, Virginia in 1789. We suspect that the two land sales of Clark's Inheritance made by John Reed in 1785 and 1787 and the 1793 will were made by this John Reed, son of Nelson Reed. However, John Reed was named as a defendant in 1807. Perhaps the 1807 court case named the estate of John Reed, rather than a living person.

1785 John Reed sold to Samuel Jacob, both planters of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a tract in Anne Arundel County. Dated March 22. The tract of 4 acres was in the spring run of Clarks Inheritance. [1]

1786 John Read and Sebby Rockhold got a marriage license in Anne Arundel County, Maryland on December 20, 1786. [2]

1787 John Reed sold to Solomon Groves, both planters of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, all his part of a tract of land in Ann Arundel County called Clarks Inheritance, beginning to the east of the spring, heretofore mentioned by William Reed Senior, in a devise of his last will and testament in favor of his son William. Witnessed by Richard Harwood Jr and Nicholas Worthington. Sibby (Seborah?) Reed, wife of John relinquished her right of dower in the land of her own accord. Dated December 4. [3]

1790 John Read lived in Patapsco Lower Hundred Twp, Baltimore County, Maryland, in a household with 2 males under age 16, 1 males age 16 and over, and 3 females. [4]

1793 John Reed, of Anne Arundel County, dated his will on January 6, 1793. He left all his estate to his wife Seborah (Sibby?) Reed, who was named executor. Witnessed by John Long, John Rigby, and Henry Davidge. The will was affirmed in probate on October 4, 1793. [5]

1807 John Reed was named as a defendant in a claim by Solomon Groves against the estate of John's father Nelson Reed involving Clarke's Inheritance. This suggests that John Reed was alive at this time, perhaps in Virginia.

Perhaps the Fairfax County, Virginia documents, below, relate to a different, but perhaps related, John Reed.

1782 John Reed appeared on the census list of Richard Chichester for Fairfax, Virginia with 7 white people [6] and on the list of John Gibson with 3 white people [7].

1782 John Reed was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [8]

1785 John Reed was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [9]

1787 John Reed and John Simpson Reed were taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [10]

1789-1792 John Reed was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [11] [12] [13]

1791 John Reed and Catherine Day married in Fairfax County, Virginia. [14]

1793 Nelson and Isaac and Jno Reed were taxed together in Fairfax County. [15] [16]

1797 The road from the falls Church to the little falls mentioned tythes (taxes) of Nelson, James, and John Reid (sic, Reed). [17]

1799 John Reed was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [18] [19]

1810 John Reed lived in Fairfax County, Virginia in a household with Males: 1 (age 10 thru 15), 3 (age 16 thru 25), and 1 (age 45 and over); Females: 2 (age Under 10), and 1 (age 45 and over). [20]

A descendant of Nancy Reed Harris reports several DNA matches with descendants of children of Nelson Reed. Nancy Reed (1806, Virginia - ?) first married Dempsey Harris in 1825. Dempsey Harris drowned in the Potomac in the early 1830's. Dianna Reed, sister of Nancy Reed, married David Walker in 1819 and then died, perhaps in the early 1830's. Widows Nancy Reed Dempsey and David Walker (c 1794 - 1848) were then married. The parents of sisters Nancy and Dianna Reed are unknown.
