1689 Samuel Craighead, son of Robert Craighead and Agnes Heart was baptized in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, on "Octobr 20 ... Mr Robt Craighead & Agnes Hart a lawll. son; Samuel witnesses Mrs Tho: Kennedy and & Robt Landes." [1]

1725 Henry Lecky, Patrick Mackey, James Coningham and Samuel Craighead obtained a lease for 41 years of the Manor of Lizard in Ireland, owned by the London Ironmongers Company. The manor was in Colraine, county Londonderry. [2]

1738 An advertisement in a London newspaper about the sale of an estate in Dublin mentioned that "Printed Rent Rolls of these Estates are lodged with Mess Knox and Craghead, at their house in Crosby Square, Bishopgate Street, London." [3] [4]

1743 An advertisement in a London newspaper about the lease of "A House at Charleton, Kent" directed clients to "Enquire of Mess. Knox and Craghead, in Crosby-Square, Bishopgate-Street." [5] [6]

1743/44 An Address of the Merchants of the City of London, including Knox and Craghead, to his Majesty was published in a London newspaper in February. [7]

1745 An Address of the Merchants of the City of London, including Sam. Craghead, to his Majesty was published in a London newspaper in September. [8]

1752-1760 Samuel Craghead was elected an officer of the South Sea Company. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]

1757 Samuel Craghead was one of the Guardians of the Hospital for Children. [14]

1757 Samuel Craghead wrote his will on October 11. He added a codicil dated 31 July 1759 and a second, undated codicil. [15]

I Samuel Craghead of London Merchant make and declare this to be my last Will after my Funeral Expence and Debts of which at present I know none are paid I give to my Brother John Craghead five hundred pounds and in case of his death his Wife Anne Craghead and in case of her death to her surviving child or children equally to be divided betwen them I give to the children now living of my late sister Jane Wilson each one hundred pounds and to the children of Mrs Kyle lately dead two hundred pounds and to my Niece or her Children the Widow Kath. Wilson one hundred pounds so that if she survives me she is to have two hundred pounds I give to my Niece Martha Cottrole one hundred poundes and to each of her Sons Charles and Joh. Cottrole one hundred pounds. to my Niece Atkins twenty pounds for Mourning I further give to my Nephews James and Samuel Wilson each one hundred pounds I give to James Booth our faithfull Servant two hundred pounds and fifty pounds for the use of his Son Samuel. I give to Samuel Alderton if in mine or Mr. Knox's Service at my death one hundred pounds and all my Wearing Apparel I give to our Maid Molly ten pounds and to the Cook Maid Mary five pounds to Margaret Wonn(?) our Servant at Richmond ten pounds to Richard Ayer thirty pounds and to John Guglian my old faithfull Servant if he is any Ways in want ten pounds per annum during his Life I further give to my Kinsman and partner Mr Samuel Mercer five hundred pounds together with all my Books Rings Watches &c these Legacies being paid which I believe will amount to about two thousand seven hundred pounds I leave the Residue and Remainder of my Estate and fortune of what ever kind to my dear partner and Friend Mr. Ralph Knox if he survives me otherwise to my Kinsman Mr Samuel Mercer appointing them joint Executors to this my last Will dated at Bath the 11 of October 1757 -- Saml Craghead
I further give to Mr Sam'l Mercer aforesaid the sum of five hundred pounds making in the whole one thousand pounds and I give to Mr John Foster my apothecary twenty one pounds having done me diverse services in my Illness dated 31 July 1759

1760 Samuel Craghead was a subscriber to a project to aid the British soldiers serving on the Continent. [16] [17]

1762 Samuel Craghead died on Friday August 20. [18] [19] [20]

Yesterday morning at eleven o'clock died in his house in Crosby-square, Bishopgate-street, Samuel Craghead, Esq; an eminent merchant, and one of the directors of the South-Sea-House.

1762 Samuel Craghead was buried on August 25 at St. Helen, Bishopgate, London. The record lists his name as "Ralph Craghed Esq" and states that he was buried "in a Quior." [21]

1762 The will of Samuel Craghead was proved on September 13 in London. [22]

On which day appeared personally Lewis de Martine of the parish of Saint Helen London Gentleman and Micah Davies of the same parish Gentleman who being severally sworn on the Holy Evangelists deposed that they knew and were well acquainted with Samuel Craghead late of the parish of Saint Helen London deceased and with his manner and Character of Handwriting having often seen him write and subscribe his Name. And having now seen and perused the paper Writing hereunto annexed purporting to be the last Will and Testament and two Codicils of the said deceased the said Will begining thus "I Samuel Craghead of London Mercht: and ending thus "dated at Bath the 11 of October 1757 and thus subscribed "Saml. Craghead the first of the said Codicils beginning thus "I further give to Mr Samuel Mercer aforesaid and ending thus "dated 31 July 1759" and thus Subscribed Saml Craghead and the second and last of the said codicils beginning thus "I further give to my Servant Sam: Alderton and ending thus "that he may not be left in want" and thus subscribed Saml Craghead do verily believe the whole of the said Will and two Codicils beginning and ending as aforesaid and the Name "Saml Craghead thereto respectively set and subscribed to be all of the proper Handwriting of the said Samuel Craghead Esquire deceased. This WIll was proved at London with two Codicils on the thirteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty two before the Worshipfull George Harris Doctor of Laws and Surrogate ... of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oaths of Ralph Knox Esquire and Samuel Mercer the Executors named in the said Will to whom administration of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased was granted they having been first sworn duly to administer.
