Notes for Elizabeth

1483 Elizabeth and her first husband, Richard Naylor, had eight children and were expecting a baby when Richard wrote his will, dated July 18, in which he named sons John, Robert, Valentyne, Richard, and Thomas, daughters Thomasyn, Alice, and Johan, his wife Elizabeth, a child in the womb of his wife, and his sisters Alice and Margaret. [1]

1483 Richard Naylor's will was proved on August 22 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. [2]

1484 Elizabeth's second husband "Robert Bassett, Lord mayor of London, 1475-6" [3] died "between 11 May and 27 July 1484." [4]

1485 A bond for £920, dated 3 June 1485, was entered in a Letter Book of the Corporation of the City of London, for the payment of a like sum "to the use of Robert, Valentine, Hugh, Thomesina, Alice, and Johanna, children of Richard Nailer, late Alderman, when they come of age or marry." Footnotes to this record in Sharpe's Calendar of the Letter Book say that Richard was of "Tower Ward, ob. 1483" and list acknowledgements of satisfaction "by Robert Bifeld, who married the above Thomesina; by Walter Robert, who married the above Alice; and Richard Coulpepyr, who married the above Johanna. Valentine recorded as having died." [5]

1485 Elizabeth's third husband "John Stokker" died about "Sep 1485 (will dat. 23 Sept. 1485, pr. 12 Sep 1486." [6] [7]

1492 Elizabeth's fourth husband, George Neville, 4th Lord Bergavenny, died on September 20 and was buried at Lewes Priory, Sussex, England. [8] [9]

1492 George Neville, 4th Lord Bergavenny, died on September 20 and was buried at Lewes Priory, Sussex, England. [10] [11]

"IV. 1476. 4. George (Nevill) Lord Bergavenny, 2nd but 1st surv. s. and h. by 1st wife, b. at Raby Castle, and bap. at Staindrop, co. Durham. He was knighted at Tewkesbury, by Edward IV, 4 May 1471; was aged 36 and more in 1476. On 12 Jan. 1476/7, he had livery of the lands of his parents, but he never had seizin of Abergavenny. Will, in which she describes herself as of Berghdenne, in the parish of Chartham, Kent, widow, dat. 14 Apr. 1500, pr. 19 June following." [12]

George Neville was succeeded by his son George. The succession of his estate is discussed in a report of cases decided in English equity courts. [13]

1500 In her will dated 14 April, "Dame Elizabeth Nevile Lady of Bergavenne of the parishe of Chartham in the countie of Kent widowe," names her children, "John Naylor, my son, Hugh Naylor and Robert Naylor, brothers to the said John, and Thomazine, Alice, and Joan, sisters to the said Hugh and Robert" and wills that a priest pray for her soul and the souls of her four husbands, "George Nevile Knyght late Lorde of Bergavenne, Richard Nayler, Robert Bassett, and John Stokker." The will was proved 19 June 1500 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. [14] [15]

These documents suggest that Richard and Elizabeth's sons Richard and Thomas were living on the date of their father's will and had died by the date of the bond for the surviving minor children. The eldest son John may have been of age and may have received his portion before the 1485 bond. John and Robert Naylor were witnesses to the marriage settlement for their sister Alice Naylor dated 20 February 1491/2.

Richard Naylor and his widow Elizabeth were buried at St. Martin's Outwich, London, England.

Research Notes:

The following Court of Chancery abstracts suggests that Elizabeth (___) (Naylor) (Basset) (Stokker) Neville was a daughter of a Thomas Warde who had land in Hemswell in Lincolnshire and that Agnes, wife of John Goldying" was also a daughter of a Thomas Warde with land in Hemswill.

In an undated (1386-1558) Chancery court case, C 1/1509/10, plaintiff "Elizabeth, late the wife of Richard Nayler" sued defendant Robert Code concerning a "Messuage and lands in Hemswell and Eneterby (i.e. Snitterby ?), late of Thomas Warde, deceased father of complainant. Lincolnshire." [16]

In another Chancery court case, dated 1486-1493, plaintiffs "John Goldyng and Agnes, his wife, previously the wife of Richard Medlay, and daughter and heir of Thomas Warde" sued defendant Clement Asthorpp, yeoman, concerning "Detention of deeds relating to land in Hemyswell, and forgery of other deeds.
