Research Notes:

It is difficult to distinguish between William Coate [notes above], son of Marmaduke Coate and Ann Pole, and William Coate [23], son of Samuel Coate and Mary Saunders. We are uncertain about which was the spouse of Rebecca Sharp.

A genealogical biosketch reports [24]:

William Coate, son of Marmaduke and Ann (Pole), was born 6-14-1702, died 1749, married 1727, Rebecca Sharp, daughter of Hugh and Rachel (French). (See the Sharp Family.) He was probably born in Hambridge, Eng., and undoubtedly came to this country with his father in 1715. They lived in Wellinborough, Burlington Co., N. J., and were members of Burlington Meeting. William and Rebecca "passed Meeting second time 2-3-1727." Rebecca married 2nd, 1754, Joseph Lippincott.

The will of William Coate, Lib. 6, p. 318, was signed Dec. 15, 1749:—"William Coat, of Wellinborough, Burlington Co., N. J., yeoman," mentions wife Rebecca, children: Ann, Hannah, Rachel, Mary, Bulah, Edith, Barzillai, Israel, Marmaduke, William. Mentions farm given to him by his father. Inventory of personal property £984.18.3, including three negroes, Mar. 22, 1749/50. On Jan. 13, 1761 was an account of Joseph Lippincott and Rebecca, his wife, "which Rebecca was actually executrix for her late husband, William Coate."
