Notes for John Allen and Margaret Homes

1715/16 On 1 March, John Allen and Margaret Homes were married, in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts. [1] [2] Rev. Homes wrote in his diary "Mr John Allen and my Daughter Margaret Homes were marryed March the 1o 1715/16 I Joyned them in marreage. [3]

1716/17 Katherine and Rebecca Allen were born on February 26 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts. Rev. Homes wrote in his diary, "My grand Daughter Katherine and Rebecca Allen were born febr 1716/17." [4]

1718/19 William Allen was born on March 6 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1720 Elizabeth Allen, daughter of John and Margaret, was born on September 29 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1722 Jane Allen, daughter of John and Margaret, was born on August 28 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1724 Margaret Allen, daughter of John and Margaret, was born on September 17 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1726 Abigail Allen, daughter of John and Margaret, was born on July 21 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1728 Mary Allen was born on April 3 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1730 John Allen was born on April 1 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1732 Robert Allen was born on July 20 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1734 Jonathan Allen was born on September 2 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

1739 Eleazer Allen was born on June 10 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts. Rev. Homes wrote in his diary, "My grand son Eleazer Allen was born June 10 1739 at 6 in the morning being the Lords day. [5]

1740 Eleazer Allen died on October 2 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts. [6] Rev. Homes wrote in his diary, "My grandson Eleazer Allen departed this life 8ber 2 1740 at 5 morning being one year old and four months wanting 8 days." [7]

1741 Katherine Allen, daughter of John and Margaret, died on June 6. [8]

1741 Hannah Allen, daughter of John and Margaret, was born on July 23 and died on August 30 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts. [9] Rev. Homes wrote in his diary, "My grand daughter Hanna Allen was born July 23d about 5 in ye morning 1741 she departed this life August 30 about 7 at night being 38 days old." [10]

1746 William Allen, son of John and Margaret, died on June 2. [11]

1756 John Allen, son of John and Margaret and husband of Mary, died on October 8. [12]

1767 John Allen died on October 17 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts, in his 83rd year. [13]

1778 Margaret (Homes) Allen died on April 26 in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts, in her 83rd year. [14]

Research Notes:

Handley Chipman states about Margaret Homes, [15]: "Mr. Homes daughter that father Allen Maried was my dear first wifes Mother, And a fine woman She was indeed, Much of a Gentlewoman, very free and Compliant, to both poor and Rich, was a great reader of the Scriptures, often mentioning passages to her Children with advice, was very Liberal to the poor, her poor Neighbors in particular, and I verily believe never turned one away from her house without Something and would often Send abroad to others her bounties. But above all she was a very religious person, Letting Nothing if possible divert her from Secret prayer at her Stated times, both Morning and Evening, beside strictly attending family prayer."

Handley Chipman states about John Allen, [16]

My dear wife's Father was one that was very helpful in giting [Rev. Homes] and his family and Little Effects he had, from Boston to the Vineyard, to settle there and soon Married one of Mr. Homes Daughters, as did his own brothers Son another.

Banks states, [17]

John Allen, (James, Samuel), born 1682, res. C(hilmark), gentleman. He was a wealthy man, a large land holder and a speculator, and was High Sheriff of the county from 1714 to 1733. He married Margaret Homes 1 Mch. 1715-16, who was born 28 Feb. 1695-96 and d. 26 Apr. 1778. He d. 17 Oct. 1767 aged 85 years.

Handley Chipman also states about John Allen, [18]:

My said Father in Law, John Allen, Esq'r, was as to the family as I think I have been informed, of Welch Extract. What led the ancient father of father Allen to Settle on the Vineyard I do not recollect that I ever heard, but the Allen family became very Noted and Potent on Said Island, as the family of the Mayhews was before them. My father in Law had one Brother in particular whom I knew when I was a boy and who died I believe about the year 1730 he did shear I have been told, Sometimes and own as well as I hear 2400 Sheep a Year, it being an Island on which vast numbers of Sheep was kept. he [Ebenezer Allen] Lived in great Splender, his wife was Minister Russels Daughter of Barnstable.

As to my Father in Law he was a very stirring driving gentlemen for the World. he acquired a considerable Estate, was Sheriff in his younger years, then a judge of he Inferior Court, a Major, then Lieut Colonel, was of a very quick temper, but Soon over, very contrary to his dear wifes temper which was calm and Mild and She being endowed with much peity and prudence, could almost at any time be influencial in calming her husband when he got into a frett. He was a person that pushed on his Children in very early Life to work and transacting business.

He was a man of small stature.
