Notes for Abraham Greenawalt and Susanna Weyland

1745 Abraham Greenawalt was born about 1745. As described in the notes below, he later married and lived in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [1]

Manor Township takes its name from the Manor of Conestoga, which was originally surveyed and reserved for William Penn in 1719. There is evidence that William Penn visited this area prior to 1690. At this time the area was Native American territory. The Susquehannocks were the largest tribe in the Susquehanna Valley with the center of their community in the Turkey Hill area. The Quaker government had surveyors lay off a large area bounded by the Little Conestoga Creek near Millersville, to the Susquehanna River, and to the Conestoga Creek.

The price was for $100, for a lot in Millersburg, Manor Twp that they had rented in 1792 from Isaac Myer. Abraham made his mark with an X. The name of Susanna Grinnwald was copied in German Script, so this could be the original name. [69]

1815 Abraham Greinewald of Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania wrote his will on October 6, 1808. The probate date was April 8, 1815. [70] [71] [72] [73] [74] [75] [76] [77] [78] [79] [80] [81] [Photocopy, Extract of Abraham Greenawalt's will.]

Children Of Abraham Greenawalt II and first wife Elizabeth Knight: Abraham Greenawalt III born 1760 Manor Township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. died 8/3/ 1841. Married Susan Deimler born 1786 Manor Twp, Lancaster County. Abraham III served in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia 1794 as a Private 3rd class under Captain Leonard Rathron’s 9th battalion. We have assumed here, with no basis, that all military documents for Abraham Greenawalt refer to the son of this Abraham Greenawalt.

Two generations of Grünewald sons were baptized at Warwick Twp, Lancaster County:

1759 Abraham, son of Jacob and Catharine Grünewald, was born in April. He was baptized on April 16 with sponsors Abraham and Anna Maria Schellhammer, at White Oaks [Weisseichenland] Church, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [90]

1790 John Jacob, son of Abraham and Maria Barbara Grünewald, was born on June 11. He was baptized on August 1, 1790 with sponsors Georg and Elisabetha Grünewald, at White Oaks [Weisseichenland] Church, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [91] The spouse was not named Susanna.

1782 Several other Greenawalt families also lived in Lebanon Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Philip Greenewalt was taxed 1 pound 3 shillings 9 pence for a horse and 20 pounds for 300 acres 5 horses and 2 cattle. [92] Nicholas Grinewalt was taxed 15 pounds as an inmate. [93] John Greenewalt was taxed 3 pounds 10 shillings as a freeman. Chris't Krinewalt was taxed 3 pounds 15 shillings as a freeman. [94]

Susan Wyland has been named as Abraham Greenawalt's wife. We seek evidence to clarify this possible relationship and her ancestry.

1766 Abraham Greenawalt married Susan Weyland on November 3. [95] [96]

1759 Peter Wyland wrote his will in German in Lancaster County. [97]

1794 The will of Christian Weiland of Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, was dated May 8, 1794 with probate date October 9, 1794. The will named wife Anna, son John (a minor), and daughters Christina and Susanna. [98]

1797 John Weiland was taxed as a weaver in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County. [99] He was not taxed there in 1790, 1791, or 1792.

1797-98 John Weiland was taxed in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County. [100]

1799 John Weiland was taxed in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County. [101]

1800 John Weiland was taxed in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County. [102] He was not taxed there in 1801.

There may have been several men named Abraham Greenawalt alive during the Revolutionary War.

Abraham Greenawalt, husband of Susanna Weyland, is registered as a Revolutionary War Ancestor with service in the company of Captain Frederick Ziegler. [103] In 1777, Frederick Ziegler was Captain of the 5th company in Lower Manor Twp, Lancaster County [104]

1780 Abraham Greenwald was listed in Lancaster County, 4th Battalion, 2nd Company. Excused. Nonattendance Return [105].

1778 Abram Greenawalt was listed as a bombadier and gunner in Captain Thomas Wylie's Company stationed at Washington (near Carlisle). Dated November 8. [106]

c 1776 Abraham Greenwalt of Northampton received Depreciation pay. [107]

1777 Abraham Greenawalt, perhaps this one, was a Private in the Company of Captain Emanuel Herman of the Second Battalion of York County. [108] This is inconsistent with his residence in Lancaster County throughout his life.

1819 Abraham Greenawalt, age 62, of York County Pennsylvania was listed on the pension roll for service in the Pennsylvania Continental Line. [109] This suggests he was born about 1757, which is inconsistent with his marriage in 1766.

Adam Weyland and Elizabeth Blankenberger have been named as Susanna's parents. Their marriage has been reported in Culpepper, Virginia. Susanna has been reported born in 1746 in Philadelphia. [110]

Balthasar Blankenbaker on Dec. 17, 1759 made deed of gift to Adam Wayland, "his wife Elizabeth being my daughter."

Balthasar Blankenbeeker made will Jan. 7, 1762, probated Apr. 1, 1774. He mentions wife Anne Margaret; daughters Anne Barbara, wife of Lewis Fisher, and Elizabeth, wife of Adam Wayland.

1762-1776 Adam Wayland and Elizabeth were sponsors at the baptisms of several children of Christoph Blankenbucher and Christina Fink. Adam was married to Maria by 1778. [111]
