Notes for William Barker and Mary Titteley

"William Barker of Hopton Castle, co. Salop, Mary. sist. and h. of Wm. Tyttelley of Tyttelley, co. Chester. Their descentdants long continued at Hopton Castle, and one of them, Andrew Barker, purchased the Manor of Fairford, co. Glos. 1660. This latter estate was eventually bequeathed by Esther Barker in 1789 to John Raymond, who then assumed by license the name and arms of Barker." [1]

1584 Mary Barker wrote her will on April 20. [2]

In the name of God amen The yeare of our Lorde god one thowsand fyve hundred eightie fower, and the twoe and twentith daye of the moneth of Aprill: I Marye Barker of the p[ar]ishe of Hopton w'thin the dioces of Hereford sicke and diseased of bodye, but whole and sounde of mynde (god be praised therefore) doe make this my last will & testam[en]t in manner and fourme followinge (viz) Imprimis I committ my soule to allmightie god stedfastlye belevinge that by the meritts of Christs deathe and passion, And throughe faithe in his bloud I am one of the number of them that shalbe saved, and my body to the earthe from whence yt came. Item I give and bequeathe unto Ralfe Mynton sixe poundes thirtene shillings fower pence withe the bed that he lyeth uppon, and twoe paire of sheetes and the newe covrlett that he last made. Item I gyve unto everie one of my three servaunts maydes and to Ursula vi s viij d. Item to Marye Vaughan my best petycote and my gowne that Mrs. Harley gave me. Item to everie s[er]vant man and boye vi s viij d. Item to my Cozen Langford's wife my rugge gowne withe a p[ar]tlett and kerchefil Item to everie of my godchildren I give iij s iiij d. Item to every of my childrens children I gyve twoe ewes and to Lambes. I give also towardes the Reparacion of the Churche of Hopton aforesaide xiij s iiij d. Item I give to the poore howshoulders of the p[ar]ishe of Hopton Twentie shillinges. Lastlye I referre all other things to bee disposed accordinge to the discression of my executors. Item I confesse that theise onely are the debts whiche I owe. Fyrst I owe unto William Harley iij li xiij s iiij d. Item to Thomas Beare x s. Item to Harrye Hughes iij li. Item I owe to my sonne John Barker sixtene pounds. Item I owe unto my sonne Thomas unpaide as yett of his Fathers Legacies Twentie three pounds. Item I owe to Thomas w'ch I borrowed at twoe severall tymes to paie Rent fyve poundes. Item I owe to my sonne in lawe Francs Holland eight poundes. Item to my sonne Thomas w'ch I borrowed to paye pte of a greater Some to my sonne in law Francs Holland sixtene poundes. Item I owe to Mr Robert Corbett of Stanwardyne Eleaven poundes. And the Debtes owinge to me are these. Fyrst a stocke of sheepe sett unto John Wigmor, price fyve pounds. Item Thomas Precce of Clun and an other woman with him have bought Fyftie busshells of Rye payinge for Twentie busshells thereof ijs iiijd the busshell, and for the other Thirtie ij s vj d the busshell, to be paide at the latter Ladye Daye in harvest next, of this Preece hathe received eight busshells and the woman p[ar]tener with him fower busshells. Item the Smythe of Newcastle and a woman beinge his Neighbour with him have bought and received Twentye busshells of Rye of ij s iiij d the busshell to be paide at or Ladye daie in the harvest next followinge. Item Roger Whittoll oweth for one busshell of Rye to be paide at Or Later [sic] lady Daye ij s viij d. Item Arthur Blacknay oweth for corne xiiij s. Item I doe appoint and make my brother William Tytley, and Thomas Barker my sonne my executors to p[er]forme and fullfill this my last Will and Testament.
