1876 A. M. Bortner and Jennie A. Eichelberger were married on October 1, in Darke County, Ohio by Rev. Hanson. [1]

1880 Amos Bortner (age 28, born in Ohio, married) lived in Jackson Twp, Darke County, Ohio, in a household with Jennie Bortner (age 28), Zelma V Bortner (age 1), and Orra W Bortner (age 3m). Amos Bortner's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Ohio. Amos Bortner's occupation was farming. [2]

1881 L. E. Bortner, son of Amos Bortner and Jane Eichelbarger, was born on August 3, in Jackson Twp, Darke County, Ohio. [3]

1883 Bessie Bortner, daughter of Amos Bortner and Jane Eichelbarger, was born on February 2, in Jackson Twp, Darke County, Ohio. [4]

1900 Amos M. Bortner (age 49, born in Ohio in Nov 1850, married for 22 years) and Jannie Bortner (age 48) lived on Cane? Street in Winchester City, White River Twp, Randolph County, Indiana with children Zelma (age 21), Ora W (age 20), Lee (age 18), and Elva (age 16). They have been married 22 years. Jannie has had 4 children, all living. Amos, Ora, and Lee were teamsters and Zelma was a dressmaker. [5]

1902 Zelma V Bortner, daughter of Amos Bortner and Jennie Eichelberger, and Otho Retter were married on November 24, in Randolph County, Indiana. [6]

1906 Ora Wilton Bortner, son of Amos Bortner and Jennie Eichelberger, and Mary Elizabeth Dull were married on November 24, in Randolph County, Indiana. [7]

1908 Elva J Bortner, daughter of Amos M. Bortner and Jennie Eichelberger, married Orla L Bowman on February 14, in Randolph County, Indiana. [8]

1909 Lee E. Bortner, son of Amos Bortner and Jennie Eichelberger, married Nellie F. Wiggs on September 15, in Randolph County, Indiana. [9]

1910 Amos M Bortner (age 57, born in Ohio, married for 35 years) lived in White River Twp, Randolph County, Indiana, in a household with Jennie A Bortner (age 55). Amos M Bortner's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Ohio. Amos M Bortner could read and write. Amos M Bortner's occupation was teamster, General Hauling. [10]

1917 Ora Wilton Bortner, born February 29, 1880, registered for the draft. Ora had blue eyes. [11]

1920 A M Bortner (age 69, born in Ohio, married) lived in Jackson Twp, Randolph County, Indiana, in a household with Jennie Bortner (age 68). A M Bortner's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Ohio. A M Bortner's occupation was Farmer. [12]

1927 Jennie A Bortner, married, daughter of Joseph Eichelbarger and Caroline Brenizer, spouse of Amon Bortner, died at age 75, on April 20, 1927 in Jackson Twp, Randolph County, Indiana. Jennie A Bortner was born on February 3, 1852 in PA. [13]

1927 The death of "Aunt Jane Bortner" is recorded for April 20, 1927 in the diary of Hazel Grill (Darke County Ohio). [14]

1930 Amos M Bortner (age 75, born in Ohio, widowed, first married at age 27) lived in Jackson Twp, Randolph County, Indiana. Amos M Bortner's parents were both born in Ohio. Amos M Bortner's occupation was farmer, General Farm, working on own account. Amos M Bortner's residence was on a farm. The residence did not have a radio. [15]

1936 Amos Bortner died on February 4 and was buried at Union City Cemetery, Union City, Randolph County, Indiana [16]. The death of "Uncle Amos Bortner" was recorded for Feb 4, 1936 in the diary of Hazel Grill (Darke County Ohio). [17]

Amos' obituary reports [18]:

Well Known - Was Amos M. Bortner of Jackson, Indiana, who died yesterday - He had been ill since Thanksgiving Day of last year.

Amos M. Bortner, a well known farmer of Jackson, Indiana answered the last call Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughters Mrs. Orla Bowman on the old J. Q. Helman farm six miles northwest of Union City where Mr. Bortner had been residing for the past three years. He became ill Thanksgiving day, 1935 and had been confined to his bed since that time.

Amos M. Bortner was the son of George and Sarah Ann Ruhl Bortner and he was born in More (sic. Morrow ?) County, Ohio, Nov. 20, 1850. He came to Randolph county some 35 years ago and was a successful farmer. He was known far and wide as an adept with horses and horses that came from his hands were well broke and splendidly trained. He was a frequent visitor here in Union City and was always welcome.

He was married Aug. 24, 1893 and the following children were born to the union, Mrs. Orla Bowman of Jackson, Indiana, and one son Oro Bortner of northwest of Winchester. One brother also survives Henry Webster Bortner, Redkey, Indiana, superintendent of Jay County Schools.

Deceased was the uncle of Stanley Bortner of this city and Mrs. Curtis Gillam of Winchester.

The funeral will take place Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Fraze Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. L. G. Ludwick. Interment in City Cemetery.
