Peter Lehman, father of Noah, and now a retired resident of Elkhart County, was born on a farm two miles south of Columbiana Village in Ohio October 2, 1836. He was reared and educated in Mahoning County, and lived with his father until 1858. In that year he came to Elkhart County, where he followed his trade as carpenter until 1862. He then rented land in the county for a few years, after which he bought a home in Liberty Township of St. Joseph County and was an active farmer there until 1868. In that year he moved to Sullivan Township, Livingston County, Illinois, and acquired eighty acres of prairie land about half of which was improved. His home was in Illinois about five years, after which he sold and returned to Elkhart County and acquired ninety acres two miles south of Wakarusa. Eight years later he sold that property and bought fifty acres in Middlebury Township 4 1/2 miles northeast of Goshen, but in I906 moved to Wakarusa and bought the home where he has since lived. On November 23, 1862, Peter Lehman married Lydia Ann Good, who was born in Beaver Township of Mahoning County, Ohio, half a mile from Lewistown October 1, 1844. Her father, Benaville Good, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1812 of German ancestry, grew up in his native county, went to Mahoning County, Ohio, and followed his trade as carpenter there until 1849. Then accompanied by his family he made the overland journey to Elkhart County, shipping his goods by canal as far as Fort Wayne. His location here was in Union Township, and of his land only twelve acres was cleared and his first home was a log cabin. Thereafter he gave his time to clearing.

1836 Peter Lehman was born on October 2. He was reared and educated two miles south of Columbiana Village, Columbiana County, Ohio while living with his father. A biosketch of son David reports George P Lehman was born near Massilon in Stark County, Ohio where he spent his boyhood and gained his education. [3] [4]

1844 Lydia Ann Good, daughter of Benjamin and Margaret Good, was born on October 1, in Beaver Twp, Mahoning County, Ohio about ½ mile from Lewistown. [5] [6] [7]

1850 George P Lehman moved from Ohio to Elkhart County, Indiana. [8]

1850 Beneville Benjamin and wife Margaret Good lived in Union Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana with children William (age 9), Israel (age 8), Lydia A (age 5), Isaiah (age 4), and John (age 2). [9] [10]

1858 Peter came to Elkhart County, where he followed his trade as carpenter until 1862. He then rented land in the county for a few years, after which he bought a home in Liberty Township of St. Joseph County and was an active farmer. [11]

1860 Beneville Benjamin and Margaret Good lived in Elkhart County, Indiana with children Israel (age 18), Lydia A (age 15), Isiah (age 13), Elizabeth (age 9), Sarah (age 7), Elisha (age 6), Saphona (age 4), and Jacob (age 2). [12] [13]

1862 Lydia A Good and Peter Lehman were married on November 23 in Elkhart County, Indiana. [14] [15] [16]

1865 Peter Lehman was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite Church on October 18. [17]

1868 Peter Lehman moved to Sullivan Township, Livingston County, Illinois, and acquired eighty acres of prairie land about half of which was improved. [18]

1870 Lydia Lehman (age 25, born in Ohio) lived in Dwight (post office), Broughton Twp, Livingston County, Illinois, in a household with Peter Lehman (age 33), farmer, David Lehman (age 6), Sarrah Lehman (age 4), Isaac Lehman (age 3), Isiah Lehman (age 1, Noah?), Elizabeth Good (age 19, born in Indiana), and Jonathan Hostetter (age 23), farm laborer. The children were born in Indiana except Isiah was born in Illinois. [19] [20]

c 1873 Peter Lehman sold his land in Illinois and acquired ninety acres two miles south of Wakarusa. [21]

1876 Son Peter G Lehman, age 35, and Florine Eggleston were married on August 26, 1912, in Indiana. Peter G Lehman, son of P Y Lehman and Lydia Good, was born on October 7, 1876 in Goshen, Indiana. [22]

1880 Lyda A. Lehman (age 35, born in Ohio), wife, married, lived in Locke Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana, in a household with Peter Y. Lehman (age 43), David Lehman (age 16), Sarah Lehman (age 14), Isaac Lehman (age 13), Noah Lehman (age 11), Elisabeth Lehman (age 9), Amos Lehman (age 7), Susana Lehman (age 4), Peter Lehman (age 3), and Jonas Lehman (age 11m). Lyda A. Lehman's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Virginia. Peter Lehman was a farmer. [23] [24]

c 1881 Peter sold the land in Wakarusa and bought 50 acres in Middlebury Township, 4 and a half miles northeast of Goshen. [25]

1881 Reuben M. Lehman and Ivy Inez Hartman were married on January 15, 1908 in Elkhart County, Indiana. Reuben M. Lehman, son of Peter Y. Lehman and Lyda Good, was born on October 10, 1881, in Elkhart County, Indiana. [26]

1865 Peter Lehman was ordained to the office of Bishop of the Mennonite Church on April 30, 1892. [27]

1898 The estate of Margaret Good was settled on May 6, in Elkhart County, Indiana with payment of $113.05 to each of 10 surviving children: Sarah Good, Margaret M. Parsons, Jacob B. Good, Elisha W. Good, Israel Good, Isaiah R. Good, Elizabeth Hoover, Frances Moyer, Mary A. Behler, and Lydia A. Lehman. [Elkhart courthouse, Goshen, Indiana]

1900 Lyda A Lehman (age 55, born in Oct 1844 in Ohio), wife, married in 1843, lived in Middlebury Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana, in a household with P Y Lehman (age 63), Susan Lehman (age 24), Ruben Lehman (age 18), Rody Lehman (age 17), Alphonso Lehman (age 16), Lewella Lehman (age 13), and Harrison Lehman (age 11). Lyda A Lehman's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Virginia. Lyda A Lehman had had 17 children, 13 of them living. [28] [29]

1906 Peter Lehman moved to Wakarusa, Indiana and bought the home where he lived for some time. [30]

1910 Peter L Lehman (age 73, born in Ohio), married for 47 years, lived on East Waterford Street, Olive Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana, in a household with Lydia A Lehman (age 65). Peter L Lehman's father was born in Maryland and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Peter L Lehman's occupation was contracting, horses co, own account. Peter L Lehman's residence was a house, owned, mortgage free. Lydia had had 17 children, of whom 13 were living. [31] [32]

1912 Peter and Lydia Lehman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and 11 of their children attended with their families.

1920 Liddia A Lehman (age 75, born in Ohio), wife, married, lived on East Waterford St, Wakarusa Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana, in a household with Peter Y Lehman (age 83). Liddia A Lehman's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Virginia. [33] [34]

1920 Mrs Lydia Lehman, married, spouse of Peter G. Lehman, died on March 29, at age 75, in Wakarusa, Elkhart County, Indiana. She was born on October 1, 1844, in Ohio, daughter of Benjamin Good and Margaret Good. [35] [36]

1920 An obituary for Mrs. Peter Lehman reported [37]:

Mrs. Peter Lehman dies at her home in Wakarusa Mrs. Peter Y. Lehman of Wakarusa, aged 75, died at 8 o'clock this morning of heart trouble. Mr. and Mrs. Lehman previous to locating at Wakarusa lived in Middlebury township. Mrs. Lehman is survived by her husband, eight sons, and five daughters, among whom is Mrs. Harrison Miller of near Elkhart, 53 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers. Funeral services will be held at the Yellow Creek church at 2 o'clock Thursday. Rev. J.F. Funk and Rev. Williams Weaver of the Prarie Street Mennonite church will have charge.

1920 An obituary for Lydia Ann Good reported [38]:

Lehman.-Lydia Ann, daughter of Bennival Good, was born in Mahoning County, Ohio, Oct. 1, 1844; died in Wakarusa, Indiana, Mar. 30, 1920; aged 75 y. 5 m. 29 d. She was united in marriage to Peter Y. Lehman, Nov. 3, 1862. To this union were born 17 children, of whom four preceded her to the eternal world. She leaves her husband, 13 children, 53 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters, 3 brothers and a host of friends. The children are as follows: David G., Isaac G., Reuben, Mrs. S[arah]. L. Blough, Mrs. [Elisabeth] Harrison Miller, Noah A., Amos C., Harrison, Mrs. [Susie] Amos Hartman, Peter G., Alpheus, Mrs. Henry Huber, and Mrs. [Rhoda] Martin Stutzman. All of these children were present at the funeral. She with her husband united with the Mennonite Church in 1863, and she lived a consistent Christian life, always manifesting a strong, clear faith to the end of her life. For 15 years she suffered much pain, most of the time being unable to walk, but was always patient, and when told that death was imminent, said: "It is all right; I am ready any time." She passed away quietly and without pain. This was the first death in the entire Lehman family in a period of 25 years. Funeral services were conducted in the Yellow Creek M. H. Thursday, Apr. 1, by J. F. Funk and W. B. Weaver, of Elkhart.

1925 Peter Y. Lehman, son of Jacob Lehman and widowed spouse of Lydia A. Lehman, died on March 31, 1925 at Goshen Hospital, Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana. [39]

1925 Peter Y Lehman died and was buried at Yellow Creek Brick Cemetery, Southwest, Elkhart County, Indiana. Peter Y Lehman was born in 1836. [40] [41]

1925 An obituary for Peter Lehman reported [42]:

Lehman - Peter Y. Lehman was born in Mahoning Co., Ohio, Oct 2 1836; died March 31, 1925; aged 88 y. 5 m. 29d. He came to Elkhart Co., Ind. At the age of twenty-one years. He was united in marriage with Lydia Ann Good on Nov 23, 1863. She preceded him in death five years ago. This union was blessed with seventeen children, of whom thirteen are still living, twelve of whom were present at the funeral. He leaves also fifty-eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Brother and Sister Lehman both united with the Mennonite Church in 1863. Brother Lehman was ordained to the ministry many years ago, and later also to the bishop's office, and rendered good service. But his work was beset with many trials and difficulties, and now that he has gone to his reward, we trust he has found and obtained the reward of the righteous in those heavenly mansions which Jesus has prepared for all His true followers, where there is joy and fullness of joy for everymore. Peace to his ashes. He was buried at the Yellow Creek Mennonite Cemetery on April 4, 1925. Funeral services were conducted by J. S. Hartzler and John F. Funk. His funeral was largely attended.

1925 An obituary for Peter Lehman reported [43]:

Peter Y. Lehman, 88, a former resident of Wakarusa, died at the Goshen hospital Tuesday afternoon, following an operation for gall stones. He had been making his home recently with his son, David Lehman, at Goshen. There are 12 other children living, namely Isaac G., Ruben M., and Mrs [Sarah] Samuel Blough, all of Goshen, Noah C. of Nappanee, Peter G. of South Bend, Alpha D. of Minneapolis, Mrs [Rhoda] Martin Stutsman of South Dakota, Mrs. [Luella] Henry Huber of Sturgis, Mich., Mrs [Elisabeth] Harrison Miller of Elkhart and Mrs. [Susie] Amos Hartman, Amos C, and Harrison of Wakarusa. There are also 59 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, three brothers, David L. Lehman of Michigan, Ben Lehman of Wakarusa and Joe Lehman of Goshen. Three sisters, Mrs Dan Hunsberger of Wakarusa, Mrs. Leah Warner of Goshen and Mrs Henry Zweigler of North Lima, Ohio. Mr. Lehman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Lehman and was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, and came to this state at the age of 21 years. Six years later he married Lydia Ann Good. She preceded him in death five years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Lehman lived in Elkhart county 50 years. The funeral services will be held a the Yellow Creek Mennonite church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock; burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Lehman was the father of 17 children, 13 now living, there was no death in any of these families for 25 years previous to the mother's death and not any since until the death of the father. Rev. R.I. Detwiler of Goshen will officiate at the home and Rev. J.F. Funk and Jonas Hartzler at the church.
