Notes for Georg Wildeisen and Maria Scheffler

The biosketch below is derived from several sources. [1] [2] [3]

The family of Johannes Wildeisen, Georg's father, lived in Dinkelsbühl before 1600. Religious conflict caused some of them to move to Ulm before 1632. Many records of the family are found in the church books of the Evangelische Kirche, Münstergemeinde, Ulm, Germany.

1605 Georg Wildeisen, son of John Wildeisen, blacksmith, was baptized on March 10 in Dinkelsbühl, Germany.

Georg was put in German school at times so that, in addition to reading and writing, he also ... learned and grasped the foundation of Christianity and godliness.

1615 Georg's father died and he had to live with his aunt in Schwäbisch Hall, where he continued to attend school

1619 Georg's aunt also died - he went to Rottenburg to become an apprentice bookbinder, which he successfully completed in 1622.

He then went on his first journey: Swabia, Bavaria and Austria until the “highly dangerous Reformation and religious persecution in the hereditary lands” became more and more widespread in 1626. He went to communion several times at great risk. This year he came home again.

In the same year he set out on his second journey: Strasbourg, Franconia, Thuringia, Saxony, Prussia, Greater Poland, Silesia, Lesser Poland and Hungary. He worked abroad for 4 years until he returned in 1633.

1633 When he came home there was a war going on. The Swedes occupied the country.

1381-1890 Construction of the Münster church [often rendered as Minster in English], Ulm was begun in 1381. It was completed in 1890. It was originally designed to be the tallest church. Today, it is the tallest church in the world. [4]

1632 Colonel Wildeisen of Ulm was in contact with Ruthven, a Swedish general, about military negotiations. [5] The identity of Colonel Wildeisen is unknown. Possibly, the colonel was brother Johan Melchior Wildeisen, mayor of Dinkelsbühl, or perhaps Georg, himself. A biosketch [see Research Notes, below] indicates that Georg was a gunsmith by 1662.

Ruthven was created Count of Kirchberg, in Germany in April 1632 and made Governor of Ulm the same year. Recruitment [for the army of Sweden] remained a major part of Ruthven's duties and, in February 1632, Chancellor Oxenstierna exhorted the mayor and council of Ulm to lend Ruthven funds to recruit. Similarly in May he requested that Ruthven assist Major General Schaffalitzky and colonels Chanowsky and Wildeisen to muster their regiments.

In 1635 “according to the gracious will of God, he became married for the first time... with the honorable and virtuous virgin Anna”.

This marriage resulted in 6 children – 4 sons and 2 daughters – half of whom – 2 sons and 1 daughter – were still alive at the time of the funeral. During this time things were “sad and difficult” due to the war unrest. In addition, the plague broke out in some places. Because of this great burden and the almost unbearable “contributions” (war tax), he left the area and moved to Nördlingen, where he did not feel comfortable. He quickly returned to Ulm.

1636 Georg moved from Dinkelsbühl to Nördlingen.

1637 Georg Wildeisen applied for civil rights in Ulm, which was granted to him and his family.

1653 Georg's first wife died of a “fatal blow” (tödlichen Hintrit) and a lonely and sad time in widowhood followed.

1654 Georg married secondly the “Honorable and Virtuous Virgin” Maria Schefflerin of Augsburg. This marriage resulted in 1 son and 1 daughter.

The priest emphasizes his quiet and Christian way of life. He was well in charge of his household, he raised his dear children with seriousness and sacrifice in discipline and admonition, and in his profession he was diligent and undaunted so that he could feed and care for himself and his family well and honestly. He wanted " Publish good books and ensure that things are done honestly and honestly. He was therefore appointed rifle-master [Büchsenmeister] by the Kramer guild.

He then fell ill with “dryness and consumption” (tuberculosis). He told the priest that he would like to live with his family for a period of time.

1665 Georg Wildeisen died of this disease on November 29.

We have/beloved in the Lord Jesus! So we should show the utmost love and honor for the honorable and respected Mr. Georg Wildeisen, book dealer and bookbinder of Ulm. So we also want to conclude his praiseworthy and honest birth, Christian life, and recent blessed death. The Honored and beloved Wildeisen was born into this world by honest and Christian parents in Dinckelspiel on May 10th in the year of our Lord 1605.

His dear father deceased. It was the honorable and well-respected Hans Wildeisen/Huffschinid and ironmonger (blacksmith) there. His mother Seel, the woman of honor and virtue, Catharina Wolfartin. After his sinful birth, these dear parents presented him to the Lord Christ in baptism / who renewed him out of water and the Spirit and reborn him / and cleansed him with his precious blood / so that he was a living member of his spiritual body; what happened in the hospital church in the reported Dinckelspiel.

And as honorary recipient of our Mr. Wildeisen Seel. Dear parents were careful / according to Divine command to raise him in the discipline and admonition of the Lord / they also placed him in the German school in due course / so that in addition to reading and writing he also learned his Catechisinum and the foundation of Christianit humility and godliness.

After Anno 1615, his dear deceased father departed by death, he was sent to live with his Aunt in Schwäbische Hall/ who further sent him to the writing and arithmetic school/ In 1619, after the death of his aunt, he was taken to Rottenburg an der Tauber to the bookbinder craft / with whom he remained for 3 years / in 1622, his master teacher dismissed him with honor. Anno. In 1635, according to the gracious will of God, he got married for the first time / and had his first wedding at Dinckelspiel on August 31st / with the honorable and virtuous virgin Anna / the honorable Jacob Schröpels / Lebkuchler's legitimate daughter / with whom he married in 1653 , the 27th, Martii/in the 18th year/lived in good prosperity and accumulated/also through God's blessing produced 6 children with her/namely 4th son and 2nd daughters/of which the half was still/2nd son and 1. Daughter/according to the will of God/ in life.

At the beginning of his first marriage, things were sad and difficult because of the difficult war conditions and almost unbearable contributions, which is why he left his fatherland in 1636 and went to Nördlingen in Beisig. But because he also found bad feelings there/ he/ on the advice and promise of a good friend/ requested civil rights here in Ulm/ which was generously granted to him and his wife/ for the fee/ by an honorable and highly wise council. As our Mr. Wildeisen Seel. Anno 1653. the 27th Martyr / according to the gracious will of God / through the fatal injury of his housewife Seel, was reduced to the lonely and sad widowhood / in which he lived for the year / he decided to get married again / how then happened / in which he held his wedding celebration of honor and joy on August 22, 1654 / with the honorable and virtuous virgin Maria Schefflerin of Augspurg / now heart-stricken Mrs. Wittib. With this he has lived well / honestly and Christianly / in good peace and prosperity so far / into the 11th year / and by God's grace has produced 2. children / a son and a daughter / who will continue / as long as God pleases / in be life. (Domestic and civil change)
For the rest, everyone is aware that Mr. Wildeisen is now Seel. led a quiet, confiscated heir and Christian change. He was well in charge of his household / he raised his dear children with seriousness and zeal in the discipline and admonition of their mistress: in his profession he was diligent and undaunted / so that he could nourish and provide for himself and his family well and honestly. He made sure to publish good books and made sure that things were done honestly and honestly, which is why he was promoted from the praiseworthy shopkeeper's guild to a rifle-master guild in July 1662.

But he especially cared about his Christianity with particular enthusiasm and seriousness. He loved the Holy Word of God warmly / and therefore not only listened to it with eagerness and devotion / but also read it with great diligence / and that from his youth / when he was 10 years old he read through the Holy Bible for the first time / which next to other beautiful and useful books, more has happened/he had finished it a few weeks ago/after he had diligently asked the Lord God/he asked for a while/he would hardly be able to cope with this situation/so he wanted to live long for him/ he bit the little/if he could still read the Bible/completed/what grace the Highest bestowed on him/for which he warmly thanked him. But like our heart Wildeisen Seel. from the good word of God he noticed the saying of whiteness/and made it so useful to him/that he not only knew how to make clever discussions/but also how to thoroughly contradict the opponents! So he also learned from this to recognize that he was a poor sinner and not only naturally tainted with sins, but also contaminated with real sins so that he could not stand before God's judgment. But the comforting word of Christ lifted him up in his sinful misery / which he not only loved and heard / but also believed in it / and was comforted by this: God the Heavenly Father had also sent his son into the world for the best for him / in that he also made amends for him and for all his sins through his blood and death. Even though he is still such a serious sinner/he will not end up in the judgment of damnation/but will have and attain eternal life/through such fine faith by grace. So that he does not stop his faith/but rather strengthens it/and through it he retains the power of God outside of God to achieve happiness. He will/has received the revered evening meal with his family in different ways throughout the year with due devotion/in a public gathering.

(Illness and a happy farewell from this world)
We finally come to his emotional farewell from this world / to which a primordial subject was his milder illness / which had long been rooted in him / in which he had been dilapidated for some time ago / and according to your appearance, he was suffering from diri and consumption / the ever gained more and more weight / although he is still waiting for his business as best he can / until he even had to go to bed 6 weeks ago / regardless of the fact that there is no lack of good medicine before and after.

During his illness he received the Holy Supper several times/but only 14 days ago/ with great devotion and eagerness. He has indeed made it known once and again: Whenever God wills
He would like to live longer with his own people/he would care and take good care of that/it will have to be done for them/that's why he would command his dear ones to the faithful God/who will be their father/and they already know how to take care of/what he will do Surrender to God's gracious will with Christian patience/when you have prayed with him and spoken God's word/but know how to direct yourself with beautiful Troft sayings/as long as you can use the speech/which the longer the longer the less wanted to go away/even though he didn't lose it at all/but kept it next to his mind/fighting and hearing/approaching until his end. Since he finally prayed before yesterday morning/between 9 and 10 a.m./in the middle of the prayer of the bystanders/in the 61 year of his age in Christ his Savior/whose words are heard and honored/and he bit into his final faith/and Feelingly fell asleep / and thus passed through temporal death into eternal life.

May the Lord God grant his deceased body a gentle rest/comfort and patience for his sad legacy/and to all of us in due time a happy end/and on the last day with the deceased Herin Wildeisen/a joyful resurrection to eternal life/AMEN!

Wir haben/ Geliebte in dem HErrn JEsu !biß daher den legten Lieb- und Ehrendienst erwisen / dem Ehrnvesten und Vorgeachten Herrn Georg Wildeisen/gewefter Buchhändler undBuchbinder allhier in Ulm / darumwollen wir auch zum Beschluß seine löbliche und ehrliche Ankunfft/ Chriftlichen Lebens Lauff/und seliges Absterben kürzlich erzehlen. Anno Christi 1605. den 10. May ist Ehrngedachter Herr Wildeisen Seel: zu Dinckelspiel von ehrlichen und Christlichen Eltern indiese Welt gebohren worden:

Nachdem Anno 1615. sein lieber Vatter Seel. mit Tod abgangen/ist er zu seine? Ahnfrauen nach Schwäbische hall verschickt worden/ welche ihn ferner in die Schreib-und Rechenschul geschickt/biß er Anno. 1619. nach seiner Anfrauen Tod nach Rottenburg an der Tauber zu dem Buchbinder Handwerck gethan worden/bey welchem er 3 Jahr lang verblieben / biß Anno 1622. ihn sein Lehr-Maister mit Ehren loß gesprochen. (Seine erste Reise in die Fremde)
Noch in die sein Jahr hat sich Herr Wildeisen Seel. in die Fremde und auf die Wanderschafft begeben, in Schwaben, Bayern und Oesterreich Ob der Enß sich auffgehalten in die vierthalb Jahr, und neben dem Handwerck sich auch zum Buchhandel gebrauchen lassen / biß An. 1626. die hochgefährliche Reformation und Religions-Verfolgung in den Erblanden je mehr und mehr eingerissen welchesElend und Jammer er mit Betrübniß zumal aber auch mit Chriftlicher Beständigkeit mit angesehen/und ein und das anders mal ettich Mellwegs mit groffer Gefahr zur Communion gegangen/bißer in bemeldtein Jahr wieder nach Hauß geraiset.

Weilen er aber bedacht war / etwas weiters zusehen und zuversuchen/bat Er noch selbigen Jahrs sich das andermal in die Fremde begeben/ da er dann auff Straßburg und den Reinstrom hinab gereift/durch Francken/Thüringen/ Meiffen/Sachsen/Laußnig/Brandenburg/ Pommern/ Preussen / Groß Polen / Schlesien / Klein-Polen / und von dar in Ungarn/ da er in der Königlichen Stadt Leuts schau 2. Anno. 1635, hat er sich nach dem gnädigen Willen Gottes das erste mal ehlich eingelassen / und zu Dinckelspiel den 31 Augusti das erstemal Hochzeit gehalten/ mit der Ehrnund Tugendsamen Jungfrauen Anna/ deß Ehrnhafften Jacob Schröpels/Lebkuchlers ehliche Tochter/mit welcher er biß Anno 1653, den 27, Martii/in das 18. Jahr /in giltem Wohlstand gelebt und gehaufet / auch durch Gottes Segen mit ihr 6. Kinder erzeugt/nemlich 4. Söhn und 2. Töchter / von welchen noch die Helffte/ 2. Söhn und 1. Tochter/nach dem Willen Gottes/ im Lebenseyn.

Anfangs dieser seiner erstenEh gieng es betrübt und schwer zu/wegen der beschwerlichen Kriegs-prefluren, und schier unerträgliche Contributionen,derowegen er Anno 1636. sein Vatterland verlassen/ und sich nach Nördlingen in Beisiß begeben. Weilen er aber auch daselbsten schlechte Erleichterung funden/ hat er/auf guter Freund rathen und zusprechen/alhier zu Ulm um das Burgerrecht angegehalten/ welches ihme auch mit samt Weib/ um die Ges bühr /von einem Ehrsamen und Hochweisen Rath großgünftig bewilliget worden. Derowegen er Anno 1637. mit seiner gangen Haushaltung sich von Nördlingen hie her nach Ulm begeben. (Erfaussung def Burger rechte zu Ulm.)

Als unser Herr Wildeisen Seel. Anno 1653. den 27. Marty/nach dem gnådigen Willen Gottes / durch tödlichen Hintrit seiner Haußfrauen Seel, in den einsamen und betrübten Witwenstand gesetzet worden/in welchem er über das Jahr gelebet / hat er sich entschlossen noch einmal zu freyen / wie dann auch geschehen / in dem er Anno 1654, den 22. Augusti das andermal sein Hochzeitlich Ehren-und Freudenfest gehalten / mit der Ehren- und Tugendsamen Jungfrauen Maria Schefflerin von Augspurg/nunmehr Herzbetrübten Frau Wittib. Mit dieser hat er bißher / in das 11. Jahr / wohl / ehrlich und Christlich / in gutem Fried und Wohlstand gelebt / und durch Gottes Gnad 2. (Häußlicher und Burgerlicher Wandel)
Im übrigen ist jederman bewust/daß Herr Wildeisen nunmehr Seel. einen stillen eingezognen Erbarn und Christlichen Wandel geführet. Seinem Haußwesen ist er wohl vorgestanden / seine liebe Kinder hater mit Ernst und Eyfer in der Zucht und Vermahnung zuin HErin aufferzogen: in seinem Beruff ist er fleissig und unverdroßfen gewesen/damit er sich und die Seinige wohl und ehrlich nehren und versorgen möge. Er hat sich befliffen gute Bücher zuverlegen und darauf gesehen/daß es redlich und ehrlich zugehe / deßwegen er Anno 1662. im Julio von der löblichen Kramerzunfft zu einem Büchsenmeister ist erwehlet worden.

Sonderlich aber hat er ihm sein Christenthum mit sonderm Eyfer und Ernst angelegen seyn laffen. Das Heilige Wort Gottes hat er herzlich geliebet / und deßwegen nicht allein mit Eyfer und Andachtgehört / sondern auch mit fonderin Fleiß gelesen / und das von Jugend auf / massen er schon in dem 10 Jahr seines Alters die H. Bibel das erste mal durchlesen / welches nachmalen neben andern schönen und nuglichen Büchern mehr geschehen/ massen er vorwes nig Wochen dieselbe das lezteremal zu end gebracht/ nach dem er GOtt den HErrn fleissig gebeten/ weiler beforge/ er werde dieses Lågers schwerlich aufkommen/so wolleer ihm doch so lang seinLebë fristen/ biß er das wenige/so er in der Bibel noch zu lesen / auch absolvire / welche Gnad der Höchste ihm wiederfahren lassen / wofür er ihm herßlich gedancket. Wie aber unser Herr Wildeisen Seel. auß dem lieben Wort Gottes dieSpruch der Weißheit gemercket/und ihm dergestalt zu nuß gemacht/daß er nicht allein geistreiche Difcurs zu führen/ sonder auch den Wiedersachern gründ lich zu wiedersprechen gewust! Also hater auch darauß sich selbst lernen erkennen / daß er nemlich ein armer Sünder/ und nicht allein von Natur mit Sünden befleckt / sondern auch mit würcklichen Sünden also verunreiniget/ daß er vor Gottes Gericht nicht bestehen möge. Es hat ihn aber in solchem seinem Sünden Jammer aufgerichtet das tröstliche Wort Chrifti /welches er nicht allein geliebet und gehört / sondern demselbigen auch geglaubet / und sich dars auß getröstet / GOtt der Himmlische Vatter habe auch ihn zum besten seinen Sohn in die Welt gesandt/ darinnen er auch für ihn und für alle feine Sünden durch sein Blut und Tod gnug gethan/ gebüsset undbezahlet hab. Das rum wann er gleich noch ein so schwerer Sünder/so werd er doch nicht in das Gericht der Verdanımnis koinmen/ sondern das ewigeLeben/durch solchen feinen Glauben auß Gnaden haben und erlangen. Dainit nun dieser sein Glaub nicht aufhöre/ sondern vielmehr geftårcket/und er durch denselben außGOttes Macht zur Seeligkeit bewah. ret werde/ hat er das Jahr über zu unterschiedlich malen mit den Seinigen das hochwürdige Abendmal mit gebührender Andacht/in offentlicher Versammlung empfangen.

(Kranckheit und seeliger Abschied auß dieser Welt)
Wir kommen endlich aufseinen feeligen Abschied auß dieser Welt / zu welchein eine Urfach gewesen seine leßtere Kranckheit/welche lang in ihme gewurzelt/in dem er eine geraume Zeit her baufällig gewesen/und dein Ansehen nach ein Diri- und Schwindsucht bey ihme angesezt / die je mehr und mehr zugenommen/ wiewohl er dessen unge acht noch immer nach Vermögen seinen Geschäfften abges wartet / biß er sich vor 6 Wochen gar zu Bett legen müßsen/uneracht vor und hernach an guten Arzney - Mitteln nichts ermangelt.

wolte er gerne noch länger bey den Seinigen leben/ er ems pfinde und sorge deßwegen wohl/es werde müssen geschets den seyn/darum befehle er die liebe Seinige dem getreuen GOtt/der werde ihr Vatter seyn/und sie schon wissen zus versorgen/worauf er sich in Chriftlicher Gedult dem gnas digen Willen Gottes gangergeben/gein gehabt/wann man mit ihme gebetet und auß Gottes Wort zugesprochen/sich selbsten aber mit schönen Troft-Sprüchen wissen aufzus richten/ so lang er die Red gebrauchen können/ welche je Långer je weniger fort gewolt/wiewohl er die selbe nicht gar verlohren/sondern neben dem Verstand/Geficht und Ges hör/nahends biß an sein End behalten. Da er endlich Vors gestern Vormittags/zwischen 9. und 10.Uhr/mitten uns ferdem Gebet der Umstehende/in dem 61 Jahr feines Alters in Christo seinem Erlöser / dessen Worter gehöret und ge ehret/ und anden er biß an sein Endgeglaubet/ fanfft und feelig eingeschlaffen/ und also durch den zeitlichen Tod in das ewige Leben hindurch getrungen.

GOtt der HErr gebe seinem verstorbnen Leich nam eine sanffte Ruh/feinen betrübten Hinterlaßnen Troßt und Gedult/ uns samtlichen zu seiner Zeit auch ein feliges End/und am Jüngsten Tag mit dem felig verstorbnen Herin Wildeisen/ eine fröliche Aufferstehung zum Ewigen Leben/ AMEN!

It guter Bücher-Wahr/ die Glehrten zuerfrischen/ Hat noch bey Lebens-Zeit Wildeisen eingetüschen der Bücher mancherley: Biel hat er selbs verlegt / und manchen durch Verlag zum Schreiben auch bewegt. Weil im Buchhandel dann bestund fein ganzes Leben/ so hat ihm GOtt nunmehr zu lesen auch gegeben

was vor der klugen Welt bißher verschwiegen war,

Wer alles Ungemach Christ-exemplarisch leider;

Wer seine Hoffnung feht mit flarchem Glaubens Muth nach dem was ewig bleibt / was Chriftus durch sein Blut für uns erworben hat; der wird den Tod nicht achten / und solt ihm auch das Herz für langer Weil verschmachten Der aufgezognen Hülff. Darinn auch dieser Christ, von dem die Lob-Redzeugt/ in GOtt verschieden ist.
