Notes for Philip Gardiner and Elizabeth Dale

1560 Philip Gardiner and Elizabeth Dale were married on October 15 in Burstall, Suffolk. [1]

1613/14 Philip Gardiner, yeoman, wrote his will on February 23. He made a bequest to the poor people of Elmsett, named his son Thomas Gardiner his sole executor, and appointed Thomas Moswell of Elmsett his supervisor. Bequests to his family, abstracted by Hyde, include: [2]

wife Elizabeth all his freehold lands and tenements in Elmsett to her and her heirs forever
all his copyhold lands and tenements in Elmsett to the said Elizabeth for life, from which she to pay yearly to his son Thomas Gardiner and his daughter Elizabeth each 20s

after the death of his wife Elizabeth, son Thomas to have the copyhold tenement and three closes held of the Manor of Elmsett, Thomas to pay unto Philip Gardiner, the testator's eldest son, five pounds within four years, and daughter Elizabeth to have "Crossefeild and pearetreeyard" and daughter Elizabeth to pay Philip Gardiner, the testator's eldest son five pounds within four years

his goods, cattell, and household stuff to be appraised and divided into three equal parts with five pounds first deducted, the first part to be chosen by wife Elizabeth, the second to son Thomas Gardiner, and the third part to daughter Elizabeth

the five pounds to be paid to daughter Mary the wife of John Smythe of Burstall three pounds and to daughter Jane the wife Tytus Cures of Elmsett forty shillings

1615 The will of Philip Gardiner was proved on June 9 in the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury. [3]

1615 Elizabeth Gardiner of Burstall, Suffolk, widow, wrote her will on November 20, bequeathing her house in Elmsett where she late dwelt to daughter Elizabeth Gardiner with condition that Elizabeth pay to the testators grandchild Phillip Gardiner 20 pounds at age 21, and if he should die before that age half to Alice Gardner his mother and the other ten pounds to be equally divided among the five sons of John Smyth the testator's son-in-law as they come of age 21 years. She bequeathed 20 shillings yearly toward the maintenance of grandson Phillip Gardiner until age 21 to be paid to his mother or such person(s) as have his keeping if his mother should die, to her daughter Marie Smyth five pounds. She named her grandchildren John, Samuel, Phillip, and Henry Smyth, James, Phillip, Marie, and Thomas Curtis, bequeathing them each 20 shillings at age 21 except to Phillip Smyth 40 shillings and a chest, the portion of Thomas Curtis to be given to his elder brother James Curtis for the use of Thomas. She gave to her daughter Jane Curtis 20 shillings, her son Thomas Gardner 40 shillings, Thomas' son Thomas Gardner her grandson four pounds at age 21, to kinsman Nathaniell Dale the younger 20 shillings, and to the poor of Elmsett six shillings eight pence and the poor of Burstall six shillings eight pence. She gave the residue of her estate to her daughter Elizabeth Gardener and named daughter Elizabeth sole executrix and Mr Thomas Moswell of Bramford supervisor. [4]

1615/16 Elizabeth Gardiner was buried on March 14 in Burstall, Suffolk. [5]

1616 The will of Elizabeth Gardiner was proved on September 27 in the Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk. [6]
