1597 John Smith and Mary Gardiner were married on November 15 in Burstall, Suffolk. [1]

1598/99 John Smith was baptized on March 16 in Burstall, Suffolk. [2]

1601 Samuel Smith was baptized on September 6 in Burstall, Suffolk. [3]

1607 Henry Smith was baptized on April 19 in Burstall, Suffolk. [4]

1610/11 Nathaniel Smith was baptized on March 1 in Burstall, Suffolk. [5]

1618 John Smith wrote his will on May 27. [6] Hyde states that the will reads in part:

unto Marie my wiefe the house or Tenement wherein I now dwell wth all the Barnes Stables & other edifices thereunto belonging … with all the free holde Coppieholde & lease landes whereof I am nowe seized … in Burstall … untill my sonne John Smyth shall accomplish his full age of Fower & twentie years … [then] the saide Marie my wiefe shall have & enioye The p'lor Chamber wth free lib'tie of ingresse egresse & regresse therunto as also free libertie to fetch & take water at the ponde pightle, and also all the fruite that shalbee yearelie growing in the ponde pightell and lib'tie to bake & brew in the hall for her necessarye use … the saied John Smyth paying all suche Legacies unto his Brethren as are by mee hereafter give … unto Samuell Smyth my seconde sonne the some of tenn pounds … when … of full age of fower & twentie yeares … unto my sonnes Phillippe Henry and Nathaniell … the like some of tenn pounds … at theire sevrall ages of xxiiijtie … unto the saied John Smyth my Sonne … one Joyned bedstead wth a fether bedd & bolster one blankett one Covrlett & one pillow as yt now standeth in the p'laor & one flockedbedd wth abolster a Cov'lett & one trundle bedsteade the longe table & Cubbord now standing in the haule and one greate kettle of Brasse wth a bayle … at his fore saied age of xxiiijtie yeares … All the rest of my goods Cattell houshold stuffe and corne of what nature soevr yt bee … unto Marie my wiefe whome I make my sole executrix … my loving friend Mr Thomas Moswell to be my sup'visor, for the better direction of my wiefe and children whom I require to be ruled by him.

1618 John Smith was buried on June 26 in Burstall, Suffolk. [7]

1618 The will of John Smith was proved on July 17 in the Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk. [8]

1626 Mary Smith was buried on April 10 in Burstall, Suffolk. [9]

1619 "William Hayward & Elizabeth Gardner" were married on August 17 in Elmsett, Suffolk. [10]

1635 Elizabeth Hayward of Elmsett, widow, wrote her will on July 13. An abstract states, [11]

Commends soul to God believing to be saved by Jesus Christ.
I give to 20 several families of the poorer sort in the parish of Elmsett 12 pence apiece, a brown loaf of wheat bread as it comes from the mill, a piece of beef and a pitcher of beer to be distributed on the day of my burial. I give 12d apiece to 4 honest poor men that shall carry me to burial, that is to William Layt, John Largent, Samuel Lewes and Henry Ranson. I give my son-in-law John Hayward my freehold tenement wherein Richard Barnard lately dwelt with all its land, with remainder if he has no heirs to my godson John, son of my kinsman Philip Curtise of Hitcham. I give £7 to John, son of my brother Thomas Gardiner, when 25 and during preceding 2 years my exors are to pay him 10 graots p.a. for his apparelling. If John dies before he is 26, I give his legacy to Thomas Curtise, my sister's son. I give John Gardiner when 26 a low bedstead that stands in the hall chamber, a flockbed, a bolster, a mat, 2 blankets, a pair strong sheets, a pillow and a pillowbeere, a little coffer a joined stool, a little kettle, a posnet, a little brass pot, pot hooks and 2 pewter dishes. Remainder to Thomas Curtise. Igive him 20s within a year, and to John, Philip and Martha, children of my cousin Phip Curtise of Hitcham, 20s each when 21. I give Mary, wife of William Lives of Hoo, 20s within a year and 20s to her daughter Anne when 21. I give 6w 8d each within 3 months to John, Philip and Nathaniel, 3 sons of my deceased sister Smith of Bramford. I give my sons-in-law William and Robert Hayward of Bramford 20s each within a year, and 20s when 21 to John son of Robert. I give to Mr. Carter my minister and to Mr Ashely 10s each, desiring one of them to preach at my burial. I give Philip, son of my brother Philip Gardiner, my cauldron, a silver spoon and a gold ring all which were my father's. I give John, son of my brother Thomas, my linsey-woolsey coverlet whidh lies ot the bed of my son-in-law John Hayward. I gibe John, son of Philip Curtise, a pair of sheets, a fustian pillow and an holland pillowbeere. Igive my godson Thomas, son of widow Pindesynr of Hadleigh, a pewter dish wrought about that stands on my cupboard's head. I give John Hayward my feather bed on which I usually lie. All the rest of my small goods and moveables I give to my 3 sons-in-law John, William and Robert to be equally divided among them, and I make John sole exor. Supervisor: Philip Curtise of Hitcham, to whom I give 20s. Wit. George Carter, Thomas Downes (X). Pr. at Bury 27 July 1635.

Hyde states [12]

Elizabeth Hayward of Elmsett widow … made a will dated 13 July 1635, proved 27 July 1635, in which she named many people, including "John Smith, Philip Smith and Nathaniel Smith, the three sonnes of my Sister Smith, late of Bramford, deceased." These were the sons of Mary (Gardiner) Smith still living in the area. Son Samuel had sailed to New England in 1634. Son Henry had either moved away or died.
