Notes for Gervais Farrow and Elizabeth Hawkesmore

Research Notes:

We are researching James Pharo, who died in New Jersey 1688-90. Some researchers have named Gervais Pharo [Farrow] and Elizabeth Hawkesmore as his parents.

Gervais Pharo has been reported born in 1595 in Laneham, Nottingham, England 2 and died in 1661 in England.

1623 19 December, Rev. Thomas Hancocke of Headon and wife Alice to Thomas Mynnett of East Drayton, carpenter: cottage occupied by Thomas Cartwright in East Drayton: convenant to levy a fine. Bargain and Sale: for £28. Witnesses: Mynnett, Jervas Pharoe, Raph. Robinson. [1]

1635 Jervis Farrow and Elizabeth Hawkesmore were married on November 11 at East Drayton, Nottingham, England. [2] [3]

1686 On 20 January, a fine was levied on several persons, including Eliz. Pharo of Nottingham, for absence from church. " Petition to the Lord Treasurer from George Whitehead and Gilbert Lacye on behalf of the said persons; shewing that in pursuance of a reference from the King to the Attorney General of the petition from many suffering Quakers, the Attorney General reported Jan. 20 last that the following persons are convicted for their monthly absence from church and are returned in the Exchequer as in charge for their 20l. a month; upon reading which report the King declared his pleasure for stay of proceedings for the future against the said subjects: that it now remains under the consideration of the Attorney General to prepare instruments to discharge the proceedings as well against the following persons as all others mentioned in the said report: therefore desire that pending preparation of such instruments the Clerk of the Pipe may be directed to stay process out of the Exchequer." The list named Eliz. Pharo of Nottinghamshire. [4]

1692 Elizabeth Pharo died and was buried. "(Oely Meeting) Elizabeth Pharey of East Drayton deceased ye 8th day of ye 11th month 1691 & was buried in ye Burying place of ye people of God at South Leberton." January 8, 1691/92. [5]

Research Notes:

Based on birthdates and geography, Elizabeth might have been a daughter of George Hauksmore of Headon parish.

1579 William Hauxmore and Elizabeth Pettinger were married on October 2. [6] They have been reported as the parents of George Hauksmore.

1575 Jane Reynes, daughter of Thomas [and Elizabeth, based on death in 1615/1616] Reyne, was baptized on November 28 at Headon parish. [7]

1601 George Hawksmore and Jane Keynes were married on May 11 at Headon parish, Nottinghamshire. [8] [9] [10]

1615 Thomas Reynes was buried on April 23. Elizabeth Reynes widow was buried on January 29 [1615/1616]. [11]

1613 An unbaptized son of George Hauksmore was buried on January 23 at Headon parish. [12]

1615 Elizabeth Hauksmore, daughter of Georg Hauksmore, was baptised on April 26 in Headon, Nottingham, England. The listing was for Elisabeth with the name Jane crossed out. Jane Hauksmore, daughter of Paule Hauksmore, had been baptized previously on December 22, 1614. [13] [14] [15]

1616 The will of George Hauksmore of Headon was registered at Nottinghamshire with dates Jan 16 and Oct 11. [16]

1616 Georg Hauksmore was buried on October 13 at Headon parish, Nottinghamshire. [17]

1617 Ann Hauksmore, daughter of Georg Hauksmore, was baptised on March 25 in Headon, Nottingham, England. [18] [19] [20]

1617 Jane Hauksmore (perhaps the widow of George) and Robt Bishopp were married on May 10 in Headon, Nottingham, England. [21]

Laneham parish (perhaps the birthplace of Gervais Pharo), Headon parish (perhaps the birthplace of Elizabeth Hauksmore), and East Drayton parish (the marriage and death places of Gervais Pharo and Elizabeth Hawkesmore) are close to each other in the South Clay division of Nottinghamshire. [22]

Nicholas Hawksmoor was born in Nottinghamshire in 1661, into a yeoman farming family, almost certainly in East Drayton or Ragnall, Nottinghamshire.[1] On his death he was to leave property at nearby Ragnall, Dunham and a house and land at Great Drayton. [23]

"Hawksmoor, Nicholas (1662?-1736), architect, was born probably early in 1662, the son of Nicholas Hawksmoor, a husbandman, of East Drayton, Nottinghamshire; his mother's name is unknown. The traditional birth date of 1661 rests on Hawksmoor's monumental inscription, which records his death in his seventy-fifth year (baptismal records for the 1660s are defective—according to a collateral descendant, papers and even gravestones were unaccountably but deliberately destroyed)."
