Joseph Ritter and wife served as sponsors at the birth of Joseph, son of Georg Michael Wolff, born June 21, 1734 and baptized July 7, 1734 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland, PA. [31]

Note: The Rutters and Wolfs were related by marriage. Joseph Rutter married Barbara Bichler, the daughter of Jacob Bichler (aka Buchler / Biegler / Biegle). [32] George Michael Wolf married her sister, Elizabeth Bichler. Jacob Bichler and George Michael Wolf both lived on a 137-acre tract of land bordering the northwest corner of the Rutter plantation in the early 1730’s.

Note: Read John Parmer's research report on Joseph's marriage to Barbara Bichler. This is a PDF document that requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to open.

The Rutter’s, Wolfs, and Bichlers all belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland. George Michael Wolff and wife Elizabeth served as sponsors at the baptism of Joseph Ritter’s son, John Heinrich, in 1734. [33] And in 1738, Jacob Biegle and his wife Anna Maria were sponsors at the baptism of Anna Maria, Joseph’s daughter. [34]

Wolf later moved his family to a 300-acre tract on the Conestoga River in Earl Township. Jacob Bichler gave the farm in Leacock Township to grandson Henry Ritter [Joseph’s son] in his will dated 1757.[35] Henry patented the land in 1763. [36]

Joseph Rutter paid 5 pounds and 10 shillings to the Receiver General on June 16, 1741, as partial payment of the money owed for his 188-acre section of the Rutter plantation in Leacock. [37]

Joseph Ritter and wife sponsored the birth of Barbara Sitzler, daughter of Wilhelm Sitlzer, bap. Mar 18, 1745 at Trinity Lutheran Church (New Holland, PA). [38]

On Mar 2, 1756, the Orphan’s Court at Lancaster appointed Joseph Rutter and Wendle Zwetzer [Zwecker] guardians over Henry Wolf, Ann Wolf, Abraham Wolf and Susanna Wolf, orphans and minor children of George Michael Wolf, who had died on Feb. 6th of that year. [39]

The Rutter family interacted with both the Buchler and the Wolf families. We have found a will for Conrad Rutter dated 1734, which names daughter Elizabeth Euer/Ener/Enery. We have found a 1762 deed naming Elizabeth Gibbon as a daughter of Conrad Rutter.

1734 The will of Conrad Rutter mentioned daughter Elizabeth Ener/Enery/Euer. "I give to my well Beloved Daughter Elizabeth Euer one Cow and Calf and one Horse ? along with one English Shilling … I give to my Grandaughter Eleasbath Euers one Milch Cow and Calf and one Feather Beed and BeedClose and my wife's BodyCloase after her decease I leave to the discretion of my executor to devid - Betwin my Grandaughter Eleasbath Enery and Rebeca Rutter. Item I give to my granChildren Petter Rutter William Euen Eleasbath Rutter and Hennry Rutter all the moveables in my House". [12]

1763 Conrad Rutter received a warrant for 588 acres of land in Leacock Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [13]

1790 Several of the children and heirs of Conrad Rutter the Elder, late of Leacock Twp, Lancaster County, were parties to a deed. Several children of Conrad Rutter Junior, late of Leacock Twp were parties to the same deed. Joseph Evitt and wife Margaret (late Margaret Ritter alias Rebecca Rutter) of Leacock Twp and Barbara Rutter of Leacock Twp spinster were named as daughters of Conrad Rutter Junior (alias Ritter). Joseph Rutter and Barbara his wife, Peter Rutter & Elizabeth his wife, and Elizabeth the wife of William Gibbon were named as children of Conrad Rutter the Elder. Peter Rutter, Joseph Rutter, Andrew Rutter, and Rebecca wife of James Bile were named as children of Andrew Rutter, deceased, another son of Conrad Rutter the Elder. By an indenture dated April 5, 1762 [Deed GG-43], land from the estate of Conrad Rutter the Elder had been transferred to Conrad Rutter Junior. Conrad Rutter Junior (alias Ritter) died after writing his will dated March 2, 1765. Henry, son of Conrad Rutter Junior was to inherit a tract upon reaching age 21 and after paying forty pounds to each of the other three heirs to wit: Margaret (in the same will called Rebecca), Barbara, and George, as they respectively arrived at age and maintenance to the widow Catharine. George died in his minority unmarried and without issue. Henry had debts and the sheriff sold his inheritance tract to Joseph Rutter on March 3, 1790. At the time of the sheriff sale to Joseph, the payment of forty pounds to Joseph Evitt and Margaret his wife and to Barbara (sisters of Henry) was not made. The current deed recorded that Joseph Rutter had paid the 40 pounds to each. The tract of land was described. Witnessed by James Hopkins and Philip Gloninger and by David and William Watson. The deed was dated June 15, 1790. [14]

1790 An indenture, dated June 15 was made by children of Conrad Rutter deceased of Leacock County with Joseph Rutter. The parties were described as "William Rutter of the Township of Leacock in the County of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania Yeoman one of the sons of Conrad Rutter (alias Ritter) late of the said Township of Leacock in the county aforesaid Yeoman deceased, and John Rutter of the Township of Leacock in the county aforesaid Yeoman and Martha his wife one of the daughters of the said Conrad Rutter deceased of the one part and Joseph Rutter of the said Township of Leacock in the County of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania aforesaid Yeoman of the other part". The will of Conrad Rutter was mentioned, apparently the same will as described in 1790 Deed MM-176. Perhaps these were two more heirs of Conrad, younger than Henry. Deed Book MM-187 clarifies that William was another son of Conrad Rutter, but does not mention Martha. [15]

1790 Joseph Rutter and wife Mary sold land to Nathaniel Ellmaker. The land was the same as described in deeds MM-176 and MM-181. Conrad Rutter [Senior] had received a warrant for the land dated January 3, 1733 and had a survey for the land The tract was 568 acres adjoining property of Nathaniel Lightner, Daniel Watson, William White, John Rouse, Henry Skiles, Peter Skiles, and Anthony Ellmaker.
