Notes for Henry Wolf and Catherine Goetz

1762 Henry Wolff, son of Nicholas and Anna Maria Wolff, was born on February 19, 1762. He was baptized on May 2 at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [1]

1772 Anna Maria Wolf and Nicholas Bower, executors for the estate of Nicholas Wolf late of Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, produced their account and the distribution was recorded to heirs: Anna Maria the widow, Daniel Wolf, Elizabeth Wolf, George Wolf, Henry Wolf, John Wolf, and Magdalena Wolf. Dated March 2 at the Lancaster Orphans Court. [2]

1785 Henry Wolf and Catharine Goetz of Donegal/Hempfield were married on October 25(?) at the First Reformed Congregation at Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[3]

1798 Henry Wolf lived on land of Mich'l Riegel in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County. [4]

Henry and Catherine (not Anna Catharine) Wolf of Hempfield Twp plausibly had these children baptized in Lancaster Borough:

1788 Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Wolff and Catharine, was born on December 27. She was baptized on August 12, 1789. [5]

1792 John George, daughter of Henry Wolf and Catharine, was born on May 31. He was baptized on September 16, 1792. [6]

1795 Anna Maria, daughter of Mr. Wolf was born on November 21. She was baptized on April 24, 1796. She died and was buried at Kestenberg on February 7, 1797. [7]

1798 Henry was born on January 18. He was baptized on July 14, 1800.

1802 Benjamin was born on November 8. He was baptized on September 12, 1803.

1820 Catherine Wolf and John Wolf, administrators of Henry Wolff, late of Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, deceased, presented an account with balance $1679.47. Peter Getz was appointed guardian for Benjamin Wolf, minor son, over the age of 14, of Henry Wolf. Dated June 5 at the Lancaster County Orphans Court. [8]

The notes below provide evidence to identify the parents of Bernard and Conrad Wolf and of Henry Wolf, all baptized in Lancaster Borough between the years 1797-98. The births of Henry on January 18, 1798 and Conrad on December 8, 1797 are too close together to have been from the same mother. The evidence suggests that Bernard and Conrad Wolf were sons of Henry Wolf of Lancaster Borough, which suggests that Henry Wolf of Lancaster Borough was a son of George Michael Wolf. The evidence suggests that Henry (born 1798) was a son of Henry of Hempfield Twp, as shown in the list of children above, who was likely a son of Nicholas Wolf.

We are researching Henry [9] and Anna Catherine Wolf, of Lancaster Borough, parents of Christian Wolf and of Catherine Wolf spouse of Justus Groh. It is plausible that George Michael Wolf (1703-1756) was the father of this Henry Wolf. Henry, likely a son of George Michael Wolf, was on the 1769 tax list in Earl Twp and was party to a 1770 deed in Earl Twp naming the heirs of George Michael Wolf, but was not on subsequent tax lists in Earl Twp. This Henry may have then served in the Revolutionary War. Henry and Anna Catherine Wolf of Lancaster Borough baptized several children (1780-1799), two with the same names (Bernard and Conrad) as children of George Michael Wolf, while Henry and Catherine (not Anna) of Hempfield Twp did not use any of those names. It is plausible that Henry of Lancaster Borough was the same person as Henry of Earl Twp, son of George Michael Wolf.

These notes are for a different couple, Henry Wolf and Catherine (not A Catharine or Anna Catharine) Goetz who also had children baptized at the Reformed church in Lancaster Borough during this same period. It is plausible that Nicholas Wolff (? - 1771), of Hempfield Twp, was the father of this Henry Wolf, who also lived in Hempfield Twp.

Henry and Anna Catharine Wolf of Lancaster Borough plausibly had these children baptized in Lancaster Borough:

1781 Anna Catharine, daughter of Henry Wolf and wife, was born on October 16, 1781. She was baptized on November 18, 1781, with her parents as sponsors, at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [10] [11] Her grave marker reports birth date on October 16, 1781. [12]

1783 Elizabeth, daughter of Henry and Anna Wolf, was born on July 7. She was baptized on July 27 at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [13] [14]

1785 Henry, son of Henry and Anna Catharine Wolf, was born on October 3. He was baptized on October 30 with his parents as sponsors, at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [15]

1787 Susanna, daughter of Henry and Anna Catharine Wolf, was born on January 9. She was baptized on January 12 with Dorothy Wienauer as sponsor, at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [16]

1789 Henry Wolf, son of Henry and A. Catherine Wolf, was born on February 28. He was baptized on March 15 with sponsor Henry Ernst, at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [17] [18]

1792 John Wolf died on July 1, at age 0y 8m 15d, and was buried at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [19]

1795 Henry, son of Henry Wolf, died on August 25, at age 6y 6m 0d, and was buried at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [20]

1796 Rebecca, da. of Henry Wolf, died on February 24, at age 0y 7m 21d, and was buried at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [21]

1797 Conrad, son of Henry and Catharine Wolf, was born on December 8. He was baptized on December 11 with his father as sponsor, at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [22]

1799 Bernard, son of Henry and Catharine Wolf, was born on August 3. He was baptized on August 18 with his parents as sponsors, at the First Reformed church in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [23]

Tax records for Lancaster Borough suggest that only one Henry Wolf lived in Lancaster Borough during this time period. Tax records for Hempfield Twp have not yet been digitized (as of 10/6/2019). The baptisms of the children attributed to Henry of Lancaster Borough all occurred soon after the births of the children, consistent with living near the church in the Borough. The baptisms of the children attributed to Henry of Hempfield Twp all took place several months to a year after the births of the children, consistent with less frequent trips from home in Hempfield Twp to the church in the Borough.

Census and burial records show that Henry Wolf, born January 18, 1798, lived in West Hempfield Twp.

1830 Henry Wolf lived in West Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (30 thru 39); and females: 1 (20 thru 29). [24] Perhaps this is Henry, born 1798, son of Henry and Catherine. If so, then Conrad, born 1797 must be a son of Henry Wolf of Lancaster Borough, rather than of Henry of Hempfield Twp. Also, Bernard, born 1798 was more likely a son of Henry of Lancaster Borough.

1840 Henry Wolf lived in West Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), and 1 (30 thru 39); and females: 1 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), and 1 (30 thru 39). [25] George and Benjamin Wolf were listed on the same page of the census.

1850 Henry Wolf (age 51, born in Pennsylvania) lived in West Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with Catharine Wolf (age 41), John Wolf (age 16), Catharine Wolf (age 15), Henry Wolf (age 12), Margaretta Wolf (age 9), Sarah Wolf (age 7), Abram Wolf (age 3), and Mary Wolf (age 2). [26]

1874 Henry Wolf died on May 6, 1874 and was buried at Mountville Cemetery, Mountville, West Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Henry Wolf was born on January 18, 1798. [27]

Research Notes:

1799 Henry and Catherine Wolf, of York Borough, York County, sold land in Lancaster Borough to Paul Zantsinger. [28]

We do not know the relationship, if any, to Henry Wolf with land in Brecknock Twp.

1772 Henry Wolf of Earl Twp, Lancaster County got a mortgage for his land in Brecknock Twp, which was adjacent to lands of Daniel Luber, Martin Frie, and land late of Jacob Hershberger. Payment of the mortgage was satisfied in 1777. [29]

1777 Henry Wolf got another mortgage(?) for his land in Brecknock Twp, which was adjacent to lands of Daniel Luber, Martin Frey, and Jacob Hershberger. [30]

1786 Henry Wolf, shoemaker of Brecknock Twp, got another mortgage(?) from Catherine Petry for his land in Brecknock Twp, which was adjacent to lands of Daniel Luber, Martin Frey, and Jacob Hershberger. [31]
