1725 Map (extract) showing the church at Sinzen (red mark), Germany and nearby towns. [22]
This map was published about the time they sailed for America.

1727 Hans Bernhart Wolff sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia with 6 persons on the ship William & Sarah commanded by William Hill, stopping at Dover, England. Documentation does not clarify whether Bernard Wolf (born 1674) came to America with his children, or whether he stayed in Germany and only his children came to America. The wording of the will of Bernard Wolf of Lancaster Borough dated in 1756 (cited below) suggests that it is the will of his son Bernard.

1727 Hans Bernhart Wolff arrived in Philadelphia in a party of 6 persons on September 18 on the ship William & Sarah from Rotterdam, last from Dover, England, commanded by William Hill. [25] List 1A named Jan Bernard Wolf with 6 persons and Hans Jerrick Wolf with 2½ people. Hans Jerrick Swaep was also listed [George Michael Swope was the executor for the 1756 will of Bernard Wolf] [26]

1727 Hans Bernhart Wolff and other passengers stated an Oath of fidelity at the Philadelphia courthouse in the presence of the Governor and council on September 21. [28] [29]

Tax records suggest that the other persons who arrived with Hans Bernhard and Hans Jerrick Wolf settled in Earltown and Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about 50 miles west of Philadelphia.

1756 Southern Pennsylvania. Lancaster and Philadelphia are in lower-right. [30]

1750 George Wolf was taxed in Earl Town, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [31] Widow Wolf was taxed. [32]

1756 Bernard Wolf was taxed in Lancaster Borough. [41]

1756 Both George Michael Wolf and Bernard Wolf died. Orphans Court records named the children of George Michael by two wives. A will named the heirs of Bernard Wolf, whose names match several of the children of Bernard Wolf, born 1674, of Steinsfurt, Germany. The heirs of Bernard include the children of George Michael deceased.

1756 Bernard Wolf, of the Borough of Lancaster, wrote his will, dated November 2, 1756. The will named Jeremiah Wolf and John George Wolf (1 shilling each), friend Friedrick Feldberger, brother in law Lorantz Hooft and George Michael Wolfes his childrens and George Kinder deceas'd his three daughters … and the children of Jacob Schirche deceased … Friend George Micheal Swob was named executor. The will was proved on November 6, 1756. [42] [43] It is plausible that this is not the will of Bernard born 1674, but is the will of his son Bernard, born 1701, naming his brothers and sisters in his will.

Research Notes:

Robert Wolfe's paternal line includes the following. Hans Bernard Wolff had a son named George Michael Wolf. George Michael Wolf had a son named Henry Wolf. Henry Wolf had a son named Christian Wolf. Christian Wolf had a son named Edward Livingston Wolf. We seek evidence clarifying whether these were successive lines of the same family.

We are researching Henry Wolf [105], of Lancaster Borough, the father of Christian Wolf (1780-1854). This Barnard Wolf was the father of George Michael Wolf (1703-1756). The 1756 will of George Michael Wolf named son Henry Wolf. Henry Wolf, son of George Michael Wolf, may have lived in Lancaster Borough with wife Anna Catherine and may have been the father of Christian Wolf. Henry and Anna Catherine may have had other children whose names suggest a relationship to the family of Barnard Wolf (Conrad and Bernard). There is uncertainty because a different Henry Wolf, married to Catherine Goetz and son of Nicholas Wolff, of Hempfield Twp, also had children baptized in Lancaster Borough, at the same Reformed Church as Henry the spouse of Anna Catherine. Several of the baptism records are ambiguous about which Henry and Catherine Wolf were the parents.

We have notes for several men named Bernard Wolfe, which makes it difficult to place some documents:

Bernard Wolf, notes above, was baptised in Steinsfurt, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany and married Susanna (Ludwig?). If he immigrated to America, the only record we have found in America might be a 1756 will, which we have assumed, instead, was the will of his son Bernard.

Bernard (1701-1756) with will dated in Lancaster Borough. [106] This might be, as we have assumed, a spouseless son of Bernard and Susanna.

Bernard of Earl Twp ([1735-1742]-1785+), spouse of Ursula. [107] Perhaps a son of George Michael Wolf. Perhaps also had spouse Elisabeth prior to Ursula.

Bernard (1799-1820), son of Henry in Lancaster Borough. [108]

Bernard (1732-1792) with several baptisms in Lancaster Borough, spouse of Anna Charlotte Bier. [109] This family is well-documented and shares many first names with, and lived in Lancaster County during the same time period as, the family of Bernard Wolf and Susanna. [110]

The will of Bernard Wolf names several persons who have not been identified. Who was Leonard, who was listed in the 1758 account with a full share of the inheritance? Which sisters were married to George Kinzer and Jacob Shirk? Which sister was married to Lorantz Hooft? Was George Kinder named in the will the same person as George Kinzer named in the distribution?

There are several records naming Abraham Wolf. Perhaps Abraham was a son of Isaac and a brother of Hans Bernhard (1674).

1733 Abraham Wolf received a warrant for land in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County. Was this an undocumented son of Hans Barnard Wolf (born 1674)? Barnard Wolf's son Jeremiah received a warrant for an adjacent tract in 1734. [111] [112]

1756 Abraham Wolf was taxed in Warwick Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [113]

1761 A Survey was made for Jeremiah Wolf of land in Lancaster County. [114] Land of Abraham Wolf was adjacent. [115] [116]

1762 The will of Abraham Wolff was dated November 13 in Warwick Twp, Lancaster County. Wife Agness Wolff was named executor. The will was in probate court on August 3, 1768. [117]

1762 The will of Samuel Wolf was dated December 17 in Warwick Twp, Lancaster County. Wife Elizabeth was named executor. A bequest was made to the Lutheran Church of Warwick. [118]

A biosketch from Commemorative biographical record of central Pennsylvania (J.H. Beers & Co.) reports [119] [120]:

WW. WOLFE, a prominent resident of Lewisburg, is a representative of one of the pioneer families of Buffalo Valley, his great grandfather, George Wendell Wolfe, having located there more than a century ago.

The family originated in Germany, and their history is traced to the time of the arrival of the ship "William and Sarah," at Philadelphia, September 18, 1727, with a large company of emigrants from the Palatinate. On this vessel was Hans Bernard Wolf and Hans Jerrick Wolf, or in plain English were John Bernard and John George Wolf. The latter is presumed to have been a son of the former. The valley of the Tulpehocken in northern Berks county was at that time settled by Palatines who came overland from Schoharie, N. Y. , where their land titles had been invalidated by the New York authorities. The Wolfs pushed their way also to Tulpehocken, and settled among these unfortunates. John Bernard Wolf died in 1748. His executors were his wife and his son, John George. The latter had among other children a son George Wendell, born on the Tulpehocken, March 16, 1740, who in 1758 was bound out to Jacob Miller to learn the art of cordwaining. On March 12, 1766, he married Ann Elizabeth Reid. … [See the notes of son John Jerrick George Wolf]

Other reports to check:

1756 Hans Barnard Wolfe was reported buried at Brickerville United Lutheran Church & Cemetery Brickerville Lancaster County Pennsylvania. There is no photograph. [121] [122]

1756 Susanna Wolfe, wife of Hans Bernard Wolfe, was reported buried at Brickerville United Lutheran Church & Cemetery Brickerville Lancaster County Pennsylvania. There is no photograph. [123] [124]

Several marriages at the Zion Lutheran Church on the Codorus in York County match names of children of this family.

1738 John George Wolf and Margaret Schmidt were married on May 22. [125]

1739 Jacob Welsh and Elizabeth Wolf were married on February 15. [126]

1743 Andrew Nebbinger and Anna Maria Wolf were married on November 27. [127]
