Notes for David Cockerham and Sarah Jane Coward

These notes for David Cochran of Rutherford County are part of our research of collateral Cochran lines of Nancy Cochran [1], spouse of Isaiah Pickett (an ancestor of Robert Wolfe). We do not how, or if, David might be related to Nancy Cochran Pickett. These notes are included here to give access and to allow Ancestry.com to identify possible DNA matches with Robert.

The tract was platted and granted to David Cockram on November 26, 1789. Deed dated January 15, 1820. Witnessed by James Case and James Graham. Research Notes:

Rutherford deeds: [27]

Several researchers have posted trees at Ancestry.com naming Thomas Cockerham (1750-1815) and Elizabeth (1750-1815) as the parents of this David Cockerham.

David Cockerham of North Carolina (notes above) was likely not the same person as David Cockrum of Grainger County, Tennessee (notes below). This is not a good match, since the children were born in Tennessee by 1810. Emmett reports that David Cockrum of Grainger, Tennessee was a first generation immigrant from Ireland. [28]

1830 David Cockram lived in Grainger County, Tennessee in a household with males: 1 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), and 1 (50 thru 59); and females: 1 (10 thru 14), 2 (15 thru 19), 2 (20 thru 29), and 1 (40 thru 49). [29] Matthew Cockram (age 20-30) was listed nearby.

1836 David Cockrum and Massy Cockrum were taxed in Grainger County, Tennessee. [30]

1840 David Cockrum lived in Grainger County, Tennessee in a household with males: 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (15 thru 19), and 1 (60 thru 69); and females: 3 (20 thru 29) and 1 (50 thru 59). [31] Side Cockrum and Massadona Cockrum were listed nearby.

1850 David Cockrum (age 75, born in North Carolina) lived in District 5, Grainger County, Tennessee, in a household with Sarah Cockrum (age 62, born in South Carolina), Nancy Cockrum (age 40, born in Tennessee), and Arena Cockrum (age 29). David Cockrum was a farmer. [32] Families of Loyd Cockrum (age 34), Wm Cockrum (age 24), and James Cockrum (24) were listed nearby.

1850 Loyd Cockrum (age 34, born in Tennessee) lived in District 5, Grainger County, Tennessee, in a household with Porthena Cockrum (age 22), Levina A Cockrum (age 11), John L Cockrum (age 9), Theodore B Cockrum (age 5), and Mary E Cockrum (age 3). If Loyd was a son of David, then David lived in Tennessee in 1816 when Loyd was born.

1850 Massey Cockram (age 46, born in South Carolina) lived in District 5, Grainger County, Tennessee, in a household with Rachel Cockram (age 50), Laticia Cockram (age 23), Sarah Cockram (age 18), Malinda Cockram (age 16), Nancy Cockram (age 14), Wm Cockram (age 12), James Cockram (age 10), and Mary Churchman (age 65).

1850 James Cockrum (age 24, born in Tennessee) lived in District 5, Grainger County, Tennessee, in a household with Susanah Cockrum (age 23), Arena Cockrum (age 4), Caswell H Cockrum (age 2), and Latitia Cockrum (age 0). [33]

1855 Massa Cockrum, guardian of the minor heirs (including Lavinia, John, and Bradford) of Sarah Cockrum, deceased. Settlement made December 17, 1855. Amount received from J.K. Mcanally, commissioner to sell the lands of Jacob Kinder, deceased. [34] [35] [36]

The relationship, if any, to Obadiah Cochran (1815-?) of Rutherford County [37] is unknown:

1815 Obediah Cochran was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. His parents have been reported as either Henry Cochran and Nancy Richardson or David Cochran and Sarah Coward. The probate record of Obadiah was recorded in 1890 in Polk County, North Carolina. Obadiah's widow survived him. [38]
