Notes for Joseph Ivins and Hannah Everingham

1737 Mary Hopkins, daughter of Edward Hopkins (deceased) married Isaac Ivins Jr, son of Isaac Ivins of Mansfield Twp, Burlington County on 23rd day, 9th month. Witnessed by Joseph Ivins and others. [1]

1741 Joseph Ivins (of Mansfield Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey) and Hannah Everingham, spinster daughter of Rachel Harrison, were married on October 22, 1741. [2] [3] [4]

1764 Joseph Ivins was bondsman for the estate of Joseph Everingham of Burlington County, New Jersey. [5]

1767 Father Isaac Ivins wrote his will, dated July 19, and named son, Joseph Ivins, and son-in-law, John Thorn, as executors. [6]

1773 Joseph Ivins appeared on the tax list for Mansfield Twp, Burlington County.

1782 Joseph Ivins, of Mansfield, of Burlington County, farmer, dated his will on March 7. Daughter, Mary Scattergood, £10. Housekeeper, Mary Dingwell, £5. Grandsons, Joseph Scattergood and Joseph Ivins, the plantation where I live, when the youngest is 21. Son-in-law, Thomas Scattergood, the profits of said plantation, till the grandsons are of age; and he is to pay yearly for the support of the children of my son, Solomon, deceased. The plantation which I purchased of Joseph Garwood to be rented, till the youngest child of my son, Solomon, is 13 years of age, and then it is to be sold, and the money divided between my grandchildren, Sarah, Solomon, Isaac and John Ivins, and Elizabeth, Hannah, Sarah and Thomasin Scattergood. Executor: son-in-law, Thomas Scattergood. Witnesses: John Thorn, Samuel English, Philip Bowne. Proved March 30, 1782. [7]

1782 Inventory, £133.8.6, made by Isaac Bunting and Amos Rockhill. Dated March 29. [8]

1782 Thomas Scattergood presented the account of the estate of Joseph Ivins to the Orphans' Court of Burlington County. The account mentioned an amount received of Samuel Gibbs on a judgement against him at the suit of John Thorn, surviving executor of Isaac Ivins deceased and Joseph Ivins part thereof. Dated March 30. [9]

1787 At August term, Orphans Court records regard executor Thomas Scattergood and others. [10]

1787 Rebecca Swift, wife of Thomas Swift, commanded that the account of the estate of Joseph Ivins by Thomas Scattergood be reviewed. The auditors were to submit a determination between Thomas Scattergood and Daniel Hancock, the guardian of Sarah Ivins, grand-daughter of Joseph Ivins. Dated October 12. [11]

1788 A folded document had two titles (with different handwritings): "Ivins Joseph Account 1788" (in a different handwriting) and "The petition of Isaac Ivins to be appointed guardian of his children" (in the same handwriting as the petition). The petition (missing writing on the left of the page) named Isaac Ivins, son of Isaac Ivins and referred to a will dated 8th month 1786 which bequeathed the residue ... divided among his children and grand-children: ... your petitioner (Isaac) hath six children namely Barzillai, ... abeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann, all minors under fourteen years, and who are entitled to a division by ... said bequest. Dated 1789. The writing on the petition matches the faint mirror-image writing visible on the opposite, titled, side of the document, proving that the titles are on the back of the petition. A typed document names Barzillai, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann Ivins. This document does not match either the date or the heirs named in the 1782 will of this Joseph Ivins. The children named in this document match the children of Isaac Ivins (1755-1814), son of Isaac Ivins, whose will was dated August (8th month), 1786. [12] We suspect that this document is a petition by Isaac Ivins Jr to be named guardian of the estates that his own children inherited from their grandfather, Isaac Ivins, and that this document has been incorrectly filed and labeled as part of the estate of Joseph Ivins. Further evidence for this interpretation is shown at the November term of the Burlington County Orphans Court, when Isaac Ivins petitioned to be appointed guardian of his minor children under the age of fourteen: Barzillai, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann Ivins. He was appointed guardian until they achieved age 14 upon posting of bond. [13]

1795 Joseph Ivins and Joseph Scattergood, both of Mansfield Twp, Burlington County and both grandsons of Joseph Ivins Senior, partioned land that they had inherited from Joseph Ivins Senior. Dated 19th day of 11th month, 1795. The land was on the road from Burlington to Black Horse, bounded by lands of Solomon Ivins, William Wright, Ebenezer Bunting, Samuel Craft, Daniel Hancock, Thomas Bunting. Witnessed by Samuel and Asher Woolman. Recorded March 10, 1806. [14]
