1656 The will of Anthony Burnham of Chalgrove, Oxfordshire, dated 14 May 1656, was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on October 17. [18]
Note: There is no burial for Anthony listed in the Chalgrove Parish Register during the interval between the will and probate dates. A Roger Burnham was buried on 21 July 1656 in Chalgrove. [19] The date of the will as stated in the probate copy is inconsistent with the baptism date, 1632, of son Anthony and the statement in the will that son Anthony's legacy is to be disbursed at age 21.
In the Name of God Amen the xiiij day of May 1656 I Anthony Burnham of Chalgrove in the County of Oxon yeoman being by reason of my Age some what infirme of body but of good and perfect memory and understandinge praysed be God doe make and ordayne this my last will and Testament in manner and forme following. First I most humbly Commend and bequeath my soule into the hand of Almighty God my Creator and his deare sonne my onely Saviour and redeemer Jesus Christ, hopeinge and assueredly trustinge to be saved through the merritts of his most blessed death and passion. And my body to be buryed in the parrish Church yard of Chalgrove neere the place where my preditessors are buryed. And as for my worldly substance the which itt hath pleased God to lend mee of his mercie I dispose as followeth Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Bridgett Burnham the some of one hundred pounds to be payd Att two severall payments that is to say the First Fiftie to be payed within two yeares after my decease and Fiftie pounds more, which Fiftie beinge the other parte of her portion to be payd in the Fourth yeare after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my second Sonne Anthony Burnham the Somme of Three score pounds to be payd unto him, att the Age of one and Twenty yeares. Item I give and bequeath unto my youngest Sonne Francis Burhhan the Somme of Three score pounds to be payd unto him, Att the Age of one and Twenty years Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Frances the Somme of Tenn pounds to be payd unto her within Three yeares after my decease Nowe I hereby Declare (my Monyes lying in the hands of other men) That itt is my wxpresse will and meaninge and intention that in Case aine of my debtors shall prove or become insolvent or unable to satisfie there debts that tthen there shalbe an equall abatement and deduction out of all and singular the before mentioned and bequeathed legacies and portions accordinge to the value and proportion of such some or somes of moneyes as shalbe necessarily expended and disbursed for the gayninge and Recoveringe of the sayd debts by my Executor. And I doe hereby nominate and ordayne and make my welbeloved Sonne John Burnham my full and Sole Executor of this my last will and Testament. Item I give unto my wise and I doe desire and appointe my well beloved Brother Vinsent Burnham and my Neighbour Rodolph Quatermayne to be the Overseers of this my last will and Testament in declaracon hereof I the sayd Anthony Burnham thelder have hereunto sett my hand and Seale the day and yeare First above written, And I doe hereby give unto my overseeres for there Care and paynes to be taken herein each of them a payre of Gloves to be given them with a moneth after my decease. This Will was proved att London the Seaventeenth day of October in the yeare of our Lord God one Thousand Six Hundred Fifty and Six Before the Judges for probate of Wills and grauntinge Administracons lawfully authorized by the Oath of John Burnham sonne of the sayde deceased and sole Executor named in the said will To whome was Committed Administracon of all and singular the goods Chattles and debts of the said deceased hee beinge first legally Sworne well and truely to Administer the same.
