A genealogy of the Havilands of Westchester reported [1]:
They are descended from William Haviland, who came from England and settled at Newport, Rhode Island. He was a Freeman there May 17, 1653, and a Commissioner to the General Court at Portsmouth, May 21, 1656. He removed in 1667 to Flushing, Long Island, where he purchased 100 acres of land on what is now Little Neck. He was married while in Newport to Hannah Hicks, daughter of John and Horod Long Hicks. They had 4 sons, Joseph, Benjamin, John, and Jacob.
