Notes for John Barnard and Frances Munt

We are researching Mary Barnard, daughter of John Barnard, of Stepney, married to Thomas Stokes. Some researchers have named John and Frances Munt Barnard as the parents of Mary Barnard. We seek evidence about this possibility. Mary could be the grand-daughter of Samuel Munt of Peldon Hall, County Essex, yeoman, who died in 1657.

The ancestry shown here for Mary Bernard is uncertain.

1645 Mary Bernard was reportedly baptized on March 25, 1645 in Saint Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex, England.

1653 Mary Bernard's grandfather Samuel Munt died. Mary was noted as under the age of 21 in his will dated November 16, 1653.

1657 Frances Munt Barnard (daughter) and her husband John Barnard and their two daughters were named in the will of Samuel Munt, as was son Humphrey Munt [see 1689 petition]. [1] [2]

Research Notes:

John Barnard was born circa 1612 in Essex, England. He married Frances Munt, daughter of Samuel Munt of Peldon Hall, on 30 May 1633 in St. Katharine's, by the Tower, London, England.

The abstract of Samuel Munt's will, dated 16 November, 1653 suggests that he is the father of Francis, married to John Bernard: "His body to be buried in the churchyard of Peldon. Named his eldest son, James. Mentioned his land called Popes & Millers in Clacton Magna. Son, Samuel. Son, Humphrey, under 21. Daughter, Frances Barnard. 2 grandchildren, Sarah & Mary Barnard, under 21. His tenement called Chambers in Thorpe, now occupied by, Thomas Button. Tenement called Moones. Mary Bernard Stokes was reportedly the daughter of John and Frances Bernard, of Stephney. Her mother, Frances, was the daughter of Samuel Munt, of Peldon Hall, Essex, yeoman, who died in 1653 and was buried in the churchyard of Peldon. [22]

FHL records show a John Barnard born about 1609. Married 30 May 1633 in Westbury St MM in London to Frances Munt born about 1615 in London England. The FHL information has several more generations for both John Barnard and Frances Munt.
