Research Notes:
We are researching David Curtis, son of David Curtis and Meribah Herbert. We suspect that he was the same person as David Curtis, who married Lydia White. We seek further documentation.
1756 Lydia White and David Curtis Jr, both of Shrewsbury, were married on 19th day of 5th month, 1756, at the house of Thomas White, Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey. [1]
1766 On May 5, testimony against David Curtis Jr and Lydia Pearce, formerly Curtis, was presented at the Shrewsbury meeting [2]:
Whereas David Curtis Jun'r hath married a woman not of our society and contrary to our discipline which Friends precautioned him against, also neglectful of attending our religious meetings, ... to disown him from being a member amongst us ...
Whereas Lydia Pearce, formerly Curtis, having gone contrary to our discipline, the counsel of her mother, and Friends, in marrying one not in unity with us, and by a Justice of the peace ...to disown her until she sees her error ...
1766 On July 7, William Jackson reported to the Shrewsbury meeting that he had served David Curtis Jr with a copy of the testimony against Curtis and that Curtis had declined to appeal. Jackson had not had an opportunity to serve Lydia Pearce with the testimony against her. [3]
