Notes for Phillip Harris and Mary Dust

1680/1 "Phillip ye son of John Harris & of Frances his wife was Baptized ye 16th of March" at St Mary, Devizes, Wiltshire. [1]

1685 "Mary filia Thomas Dust Haberdasher et Eliz ux eius" was baptized on May 17 at Northampton All Saints, Northamptonshire. [2]

1697 September 21 "Phillip Harris son of John Harris late of the Devizes in the County of Wilts Yeoman Decd doth put himself Apprentice to Thomas Brown Citizen and Plumber of London, to learn his Art : and with him (after the manner of an Apprentice) to Serve from the day of the date hereof until the full end and term of eight years, from thence next following to be fully complete and ended. ... In witness whereof the Parties above named, to these Indentures Interchangeably have put their Hands and Seals, the twenty first day of September Anno Dom. 1697 ... Phillip Harris." [3]

1706 Phillip Harris and Mary Dust received a marriage licence from the Vicar General of the Archbishop of Canterbury on April 29. [4]

Which day appeared personally Phillipp Harris of St. Faith London plummer aged 23 years & a bachelor, and alleaged yt. he intendeth to marry wth. Mrs. Mary Dust of ye Towne of Northton, aged abt. 20 yeares and a Spinster wth. ye const. of her Father Mr. Thomas Dust of ye same place Haberdasher of Hatts now present.

1706 "Phillip Harris a plummer in Warwick Lane & Mary Dust" were married on May 1, by licence, at St. Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey, England. [5] [6]

1707/8 Frances Harris, daughter of Phillip and Mary, was born on January 27 and was baptized on February 6 at St Faith under St Paul, London, recorded as "Frances dau' of Phillip & Mary Harris born Janr. ye 27 & bapt. Febr. ye 6. in Warwick Lane." In the margin is noted "Harris, a plum'er." [7]

1709/10 "Thos' Dust Harris ye son of Philip & Mary Harris born & bapt Feby 6th" at St Faith under St Paul, London. [8]

1709/10 "Nathaniel Goulding Fil Johis Goulding de Broughton in Com Wilts Gen venit cor Camerar Civitat viz 20 January 1709 et cogn se este appr Philippi Harris Civ et Plum[m]er ..." [9]

1710 Philip Harris, Plumber, voted in the 1710 election for members of Parliament for the City of London. He voted for Withers, Hoare, Newland, and Cass. [10]

1713 Philip Harris, Plumber, voted in the 1713 election for members of Parliament for the City of London. [11]

1717 "Mary Daughter of Philip & Mary Harris was born Septembr ye 27th & baptizd Oct ye 18th" at St Faith under St Paul, London. [12]

1717 December 30 "Michael Titcomb Son of Michael Titcomb of Attford in the County of Wilts Gent (paid to Phillip Harris Twenty pounds) And doth put himself Apprentice to the said Phillip Harris Citizen and Plumer of London ... until the full term of seven years from ... the Thirtieth day of December ... 1717." [13]

1722 Philip Harris, Plummer, voted in the 1722 election for members of Parliament for the City of London. He voted for Parsons, Child, and Lockwood. [14]

1724 Philip Harris was mentioned in an advertisement for property on September 1. [15]

To be Sold, A Freehold Estate lying in the Couty of Somerset ... The Particulars of all the Premises may be seen at Mr. Philip Harris's, Plumber in Warwick Lane, London, at Mr. ... in Bradford, Wiltshire, and at Mr. ... near Bath, Somerset.

1725 Christ Church, Newgate Street, Christenings "Sep. 20 John son of Philip & Mary Harris born 28 Aug." [16]

1727 Philip Harris of Warwick Lane, Plumber, voted in the 1727 election for members of Parliament for the City of London. He voted for Parsons, Williams, Lockwood, and Barnard. [17]

1733 November 13 "James Dunkley Son of James Dunkley of Northampton in the County of Northamptonshire Wheelwright paid ten pounds to Phillip Harris and doth put himself apprentice to the said Phillip Harris Citizen and Plummer of London ... until the full term and end of seven years ... set their hands and seals, the thirteenth day of November ... 1733." 1735/36 Phillip Harris wrote his will on March 3. "In the Name of God Amen I Philip Harris of Warwick Lane London Citizen and plumber do make this my last Will and Testament in manner following Viz. I give unto my Loving Wife Mary Harris all my Goods and Chattels and Book Debts and all my personal Estate over and above what pertaineth to and is the property of my Children by the Custom of the City of London and the Sum of Money I gave to my Daughter Frances is first to be deducted out of her proportion And I do hereby make constitute and appoint my said Wife Sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament Witness my Hand this third day of March One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Five and Six Philip Harris Signed in the Presence of Us Eliz. Bullock." [19]

1736 Phillip Harris died in April and was buried on April 20. "Burials ... 1736 ... April 20 Mr Philip Harris" at Christ Church, Newgate." [20]

1736 On May 3, "Thomas Dust Harris of the parish of Christ Church London maketh oath that he knows and well acquainted with the Manor Character and way of handwriting of his Late Father Philip Harris late of the same parish deceased and hath several times seen him write and subscribe his Name and Writings and having now viewed and perused the paper writing hereto annexed beginning thus In the Name of God Amen I Philip Harris of Warwick Lane London Citizen and plumber and ending Witness my Hand this third day of March One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Five and Six subscribed (Philip Harris) purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of his said Late Father Deceased on one side of an half sheet of paper maketh oath that he verily believes the same to be totally wrote and subscribed by and with the proper hand writing of the said Philip Harris his late Father Deceased as there now appears 3d of May 1736 The said Thomas Dust Harris was sworn before Me T. Walker Surr Present Will Chenver(?) Notary Publick." [21]

1736 The will of Phillip Harris was proved on May 3. "This will was proved at London Before the Worshipful Thomas Walker Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the right Worshipful John Bosseworth Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully Constituted on the third day of May In the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Six By the oath of Mary Harris Widow the relict of the deceased and Sole Executrix named in the said Will To whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased She being first sworn well and truly to administer the same." [22]

1751 Mary Harris wrote her will on August 17. [23]

This is the last Will and Testament of me Mary Harris Widow first I will that my Debts and Funeral be paid in the next place I give to my Grandchildren Mary Barnardiston and Samuel Barnardiston the children of my Son in Law Mr. Joseph Barnardiston of Chancery Lane Middlesex all such Plate Jewells and Rings which I may dye possessed of to be divided between them in such part and proportion as their said Father shall think fit neverthe less hereby directing that their said Father shall have the use of the same during his Life if he shall so think fitting I give to Samuel Holdich Esquire a Ring of one Guinea Value all the rest and residue of my Estate of what kind or nature soever I hereby give the said Mr Joseph Barnardiston to and for his own use and benefit hoping and relying that he will at his death take care the same of what may be left thereof be by him given to my said Grand Children or one of them and I hereby appoint the said Mr Joseph Barnardiston full and sole Executor of this my Will and hereby revoking all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made do hereby declare this to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this Seventeenth day of August in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred and Fifty one. Mary Harris Signed Sealed Published and declared by the said Testatrix as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in her presence and at her request have Set our Names as Witnesses thereto Willm Hill Sam Howes Jos Hutchings.

1753 The will of Mary Harris was proved on February 19. "This Will was proved at London the nineteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Fifty three before the Worshipful John Bettesworth Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir George See Knight Doctor of Laws Master Deeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oath of Joseph Barnardiston the Sole Executor named in the said Will to whom Administration was granted of all and Singular the Goods Chattels Credits of the deceased being first Sworn duly to administer." 1752/3 "Christ Church, Newgate, Burials ... Feb. 10 Mary Harris." [25]
