Notes for John Barnardiston and Miriam Saunders

1683 "John S[on] of Sam' Barnardiston and of Jane [was] bo[rn] & Christ[ened] April 22" at St Giles Cripplegate, London. [1]

1697 On April 5, when John Barnardiston was almost fourteen years old, he started a 7-year apprenticeship with London clockmaker Michael Knight. [2]

This Indenture witnesseth, That John Barnardiston son of Samuell Barnardiston Citizen and Skinner of London doth put him self Apprentice to Michaell Knight Citizen and Clockmaker of London, to learn his Art: and with him (after the manner of an Apprentice) to serve from the day the date hereof unto the full end and term of seaven Years, from then next following, to be fully compleat and ended. During which Term the said Apprentice his said Master faithfully shall serve, his Secrets keep, his lawful Commandments every where gladly do ... In witness whereof, the parties abovenamed, to these Indentures Interchangeably have put their Hands and Seals, the Fifth day of Aprill in the Ninth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King William Third of England &c. Anno Dom. 1697 Francis Speidell ./.W./. Michael Knight

John's master Michael Knight had been one of the first apprentices of famous clockmaker Thomas Tompion (bound 19 Jan 1673 to Lyonel Wythe, turned over to Thomas Tompion, Freedom 4 July 1681). [3] [4]

1703 Miriam Saunders became a freeman of the Masons in London. [5]:

10 Jurat 13 March 1704

1705 Miriam Saunders was taxed at 6 s. on her personal estate in the St. Peter and St Mary Magdalen Precinct of Bishopsgate. A Sam. Saunders on the same page was taxed at 4 s. on his personal estate and 5 l. 12 s. on rents. [6]

1705 November 13 "Jno Barnadiston & Miriam Saunders" were married at All Hallows in the Wall, London. [7] They received a license abstracted as "1705 Nov. 13 John Barnardiston, of St Austin's, City of London, Bachelor, 23, & Miriam Saunders, of St Mathew, Friday Street, Spinster, 32, own disposal; at All Hallows in the Wall." [8] [9] In the actual marriage license application, John is described as "Johannem Barnardiston de parochia Sti Augustini in Civit. Lond: Automatarium" [maker of automatic mechanisms]. "Josephem Saunders de parochia St Andrew Holborn in Civit. Lond Haberdasher" applied and signed the bond with John. [10] The license application reads, "November 13th, 1705 Appeared personnally John Barnardiston of the parish of St. Austin in the City of London aged about 23 years & a Batchelor and alleadged that he intends to solemnize Marriage with Miriam Saunders of the parish of St. Mathew Friday Street in the said City aged about 32 years & a Maiden at her own disposall. He not knowing any lawful impediment, by reason of any precontract, Consanguinity, Affinity, or otherwise to hinder the said intended marriage, of the truth of which He made oath, & prayed Lycence to be married in the parish church of Allhallows upon London Wall. Jurat coram me Josh: Richarson. John Barnardiston." [11]

1707 "Joseph the son of John Barnardiston & Miriam his wife was borne ye 28th April 1707 and baptized the 12th of May following" in St Margaret Lothbury, London, England. [12] Evelyn Miles Krase wrote that he was born "4-28-1707 Town House Yard." [13].

1714 John Barnardiston became a freeman in the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers of the City of London on 6 September 1714. "Register of Apprentices, Barnardiston, John, 5 Apl 1697, to Michael Knight. 7 years. F. 6 Sep. 1714." [14]

1714 Apprentice Robert Jones was bound to master John Barnardiston for 7 years on 7 September 1714. [15]

1721 John was identified as a clockmaker in his son Joseph's apprenticeship record.

1732/3 February 4 "Miriam Barnardiston from Chancery Lane" was buried at St Dunstan in the West, London. [16]

1735 April 13 "John Barnardiston from Chancery Lane" was buried at St Dunstan in the West, London. [17]
