John Miles passed away in his sleep early Friday morning, June 20, 2003, after a brief illness. He was at his beloved home in Point Richmond with his son at his bedside. John led a unique and varied life. He was a Professor, a writer, a philosopher, and a follower of Henry David Thoreau. John was born in Berkeley, California in 1915 and spent many of his adult years in Japan and Hawaii. John finally settled in Point Richmond where he enjoyed reading, gardening, his beautiful view, and the warm companionship of his neighbors. John was a frequent contributor to the editorial section of the Contra Costa Times where he espoused his unique views of life, politics, and dogs. John is survived by his son, Tom Miles, and his daughter, Jody Miles, and five grandchildren: Patrick, Kaity, Jeff, Mike, and Emily. He will be deeply missed. There will be an open memorial on Sunday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. at his home at 644 Ocean Ave., Point Richmond, California.
