Notes for Thomas Barnardiston and Anne Polsted

Thomas Barnardiston of Coleman Street in London and his first wife, Anne Austin, were listed in the 1634 visitation of London, which states that the third son of "Sir Thomas Barnardiston of Witham, com. Essex, Knight, [and] Mary, da. of Sir R. Knightly of Faluesley co. Northampton Knt" was "Thomas Barnardiston of London marchant" who married "Anne da. of Sir Henry Austin of London marchant" and had daughters Katherin, Anne, and Margaret. [1]

1627 "Katherin daughter of Thomas & Anne Barnardiston" was baptized on October 10 at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [2]

1629 "Anne daughter of Thomas and Anne Bernardiston" was baptized "16th Aprill" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [3] [4]

1630/31 "Margaret daughter of Thomas & Anne Bernardiston" was baptized "the 14th February" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [5] [6]

1632/33 "Elizabeth daughter of Thomas & Anne Bernardiston" was "bapt 30th Janu[ary]" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [7]

1632/33 "Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Bernardiston buried the 8th February" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [8]

1633/34 "Clear sonne of Thomas & An Bernardiston" was "bapt 18th January" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [9] [10]

1633/34 "Anna Bernardiston wife of Thomas Bernardiston bur 18th January" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [11]

1635 On May 19 Thomas Barnardiston applied for a license to marry Anne Polsted. [12]

This daie appeared personallie Thomas Barnardiston of the parish of St Stephen Coleman Street London Merchant and a widower aged about 41 years And alledged that he intendeth to marrie with Anne Polsted of the parish of St Martin Outwich London Spinster aged about 28 yeares and with the consent of hir father And of the truth of the premises soe as also that he knowes of noe lawfull Let or impediment by reason of anie precontract consanguinitie affinitie or otherwise to hinder this intended marriage he made faith and desires licence to be married in the parish Church of St Anne Blackfryers London. 1635 "Thomas Barnardiston and Ann Polsted" were married on May 20 at St Anne's, Blackfriars. [13].

1636 "Mary daughter of Thomas Bernardiston bapt the 7th of April" at St Stephen, Coleman Street. [14]

1636/7 "Thomas sonne of Thomas Bernardiston baptized the 23th day of March" at St Stephen, Coleman Street. [15]

1637 "An daughter of Thomas Bernardiston" was buried the 14th April 14. [16] [17]

1638 A portrait of Ann (Polsted) Barnardiston was drawn in 1638 when she was age 31. This portrait was in Brent Eleigh Hall in 1903, the property of Mr. Walter Thomas Brown. It was described as follows: [18]

Mrs. Thomas Barnardiston. H.L. [half length] Full face, short hair, with a large black hat on the head. Dress: black, a collar of muslin bordered with lace over her shoulders, fastened in front under the chin with a black bow and jewel, from which is suspended a ring; the watch, fastened with red ribbon, hangs on the left side of the bodice; sleeves to the elbow bordered with wide rich lace, four strings of pearls on each wrist, the forefinger of the right hand is holding a silver buckle, which may be fastening the front of the dress; the left hand hangs downward, one small ring on the third finger. M. [medium size] On either side above are these words: "aet suae xxxi, 1638. Copio the 14. 8ber, 1671, of Ann Barnardiston."

Ann, daughter of Henry Polsted, of London, merchant, second wife of Thomas Barnardiston, of Kedington. He died 14th May, 1681, aged eighty-eight. Her death is not recorded on the tablet at Kedington. N.B.—Prince Frederick Duleep Singh informs me that a similar portrait in miniature, of Mary Polsted, her sister, who married Brampton Gurdon, M.P. for Ipswich 1640-1654, was at Letton Hall, Norfolk.

1639 "Anna daughter of Thomas & Anna Bernerdiston bapt. 20th of Aprill" at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. [20]

1642 "Sara daughter of Thomas Bernardiston bapt the 13th of May" at St Stephen, Coleman Street. [21]

1643 "Susanna daughter of Thomas Bernardiston bapt 2 November" at St Stephen, Coleman Street. [22]

1645 "Abigall daughter of Tho: Bernardiston baptized 16th of Aprill 1645" at St Stephen, Coleman Street. [23]

1648 "In this and some former v yeares Parentes generally neglected to have their Children Regestred but they will finde the ill convenience of it when their children come to be witnesses or inherit Land" was written at the top of the page in the parish register of St Stephen, Coleman Street. [24]

1650 "This yeare a great neglect of Parentes to have their Children rejestred" was written at the top of the page in the parish register of St Stephen, Coleman Street. [25].

1655 November 13 T. Barnardiston (Skinner) was nominated to be an Aldermen of the City of London for Walbrook Ward. "The nomination of Lord Mayor Dethick, Alderman Tichborne, M. Batson, and T. Barnardiston (Skinner), had been rejected by the Court November 13 (Rep. 64, fo. 8 b) Batson being lame and Barnardiston deaf." [26]

1663 September 24 Thomas Barnardiston (Skinner) was nominated to be an Alderman of the City of London for Bridge Ward Without. "Nominated: Richard Hutchison (Ironmonger), Thomas Barnardiston (Skinner), R. Hanson ... (Rep. 69, fo. 232 b)." [27]

1679/80 A portrait of Thomas Barnardiston was drawn on Janurary 29.This portrait, in 1904, was in the home of Colonel Nathaniel Barnardiston in Ryes, Essex and was described as follows: [28]

Thomas Barnardiston H.L.[half length] Full face, gray hair, moustache, and beard round the chin. Dress: black doublet, white linen square cravat. A very Puritanical costume. Above the portrait is this: "Drawne January ye 29. 1679. Baptised . ye 6th of August 1593. at Wratting in Suffolk. Hee departed this life ye 14th of May. 1681. and ye 20th ditto mo, was enter'd at Cedington. in Suffolk." M. [medium size] It is said to be by Cornelis Janssens.

Thomas, youngest son (it is so on the monument at Kedington) of Sir Thomas Barnardiston, Knt., of Witham, Essex, by Mary his wife, daughter of Sir Richard Knightley, Knt., of Fawsley, co. Northampton. He married first, Anne, daughter of Henry Austin, merchant of London; and secondly, Anne, daughter of Henry Polsted, merchant, of London.

Thomas Barnadiston of St. Stephen's, Coleman Street, London, Comptroller of the Mint; executor to his step-mother's will 19 March 1632/3; aged 41 in 1635; died, aged 88, 14 March, bur. at Ketton 20 March 1681/2" married (1) "Mary Austen, dau of Henry Austen of London; living 25 February 1632/3" and (2) "Ann Polstead, dau. of Henry Polstead of London, by Mary his wife, dau. and heir of Thomas Farington of London, merchant; marr. at St. Anne's Blackfriars, London, 20 Mar 1635, marriage licence (Bishop of London) dated 19 May 1635, aged 28; bur at Ketton 25 July 1681.
