Notes for Lewis Belville and Mary Noe

1850 On September 20, Lewis Belvill (age 23, born in Vermont) and Mary Belvill (age 20, born in Canada) lived in Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont with Enos Belvill (age 52, born in Canada) and Julia Belvill (age 63, born in Canada). Enos and Lewis were laborers. [1]

1860 On August 11, Lewis Belvill (age 35) and Mary (age 29) lived in Morristown, Lamoille County, Vermont, with children Mary (age 10), Julia (age 9), Lewis (age 7), William (age 5), David (age 3), and Israel (age 1), all born in Vermont. Lewis was engaged in farm labor and he had personal estate $50. He was born in Vermont. Mary was born in Canada. [2]

1862 Lewis Belville of Elmore, Vermont, enlisted as a private in Vermont on the Union side on July 16. He enlisted in Company D, Vermont 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment, on 1 Sep 1862 and mustered out on 21 Jan 1863. He returned to Company D, Vermont 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment, on 10 May 1865 and mustered out on 12 Jun 1865.[3]

1862 "The following is a list of volunteers already sent from the town of Elmore [Vermont]: ... Levi Belville ... Chas. Noe ... Total 56 Population 504 Ratio to Population 1 to 9. This is a little ahead of Worcester, which claims the lead with a ratio of one to thirteen of her population. Elmore stands ahead surely." [4] [Could these be siblings of Lewis and Mary?]

1868 Daughter Isabel died on December 18 in Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont, at age 8 years, 3 months. [5]

1870 On August 3, Lewis Belville (age 35) and Mary (age 35) lived in Morristown, Lamoille County, Vermont with children Angelica (age 18), Lewis Jr. (age 17), farm laborer, William (age 16), farm laborer, David (age 14), farm laborer, George (age 9), Israel (age 10), Oliver (age 6), Frank (age 4), and Josie (age 8/12), all born in Vermont except Oliver born in Canada. Lewis wa s a farm laborer, and Mary was keeping house. Both were born in Canada, with both parents foreign born. [6]

1875 Son Frank died on December 13 in Morristown, Lamoille County, Vermont. [7]

1880 On June 1, Lewis Belville (age 56) and his with wife Mary (age 48) lived in Elmore, Lamoille County, Vermont, son Israel (age 20), son Oliver (age 15), daughter Josie (age 11), daughter Sophmonia (age 9), son Alfred (age 5). Mary and Lewis and their parents and son Oliver were born in Canada. The other children were born in Vermont. Lewis was a farmer. [8]

1888 Son Israel died on December 9 in Elmore, Lamoille County, Vermont, at age 29 years, 2 months, and 10 days. [9]

1900 On June 2, Lewis Belville, farmer, lived in Morristown, Lamoille, Vermont, with his wife Mary, age 68. Lewis, age 74, was born in May 1826 in Vermont, with both parents born in Canada (Fr.). Mary was born in Nov. 1832 in Canada (Fr.), with both parents born in Canada. Lewis and Mary had been married 52 years. Mary had borne 13 children and 10 were living. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1833, and had been living in the U.S. for 67 years. Neither Lewis nor Mary could read or write but both could speak English. They owned their home with a mortgage. [10]

1903 Mary Belville died on September 23 in Morristown, Lamoille, Vermont. She was age age 73 years, 10 months, 23 days and was born in Canada. She died of "valvular disease of heart & embolism." She was married, and her parents were Abraham Noe and Mary Olier [sic], both born in Canada. [11] An obituary states, [12]

Death of Mrs Lewis Belville
Mrs. Lewis Belville passed away last Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, after an illness of over two weeks with heart trouble, suffering intense pain during the last of her illness.
Mrs. Belville was a woman who was respected by all who knew her, having lived in this vicinity for 50 years. Her maiden name was Mary Noe, daughter of Abraham and Mary Noe, and niece of Rev. Lewis Noe. She was united in marriage to Lewis Belville Oct. 21, 1947, at Fairfield. Thirteen children were born to them, all of whom are living but three. The living ones Mrs. Mary Shontell of Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Angie Perry of Lyadonville, Thomas, of St. Johnsbury, William, of Barre, David of Fairlee, George of Littleton, N. H., Oliver of Waterbury, Mrs. Joseph Coatney [sic] of Eden, Mrs. Sophronia Putnam of Morrisville, and Fred of Barre. Of these all were present at the funeral but two, Mrs. Mary Shontell of Portland, Oregon, and Oliver from Waterbury Insane Asylum. The deceased leaves her husband, five brothers and three sisters, Lewis, Abraham and Charles Noe of Morrisville, Alex Noe of Plattsburg, N. Y., Joseph Noe of Richford, Mrs. Olive Cumo of Sutton, P. Q., Mrs. Edna Blair of Morrisville and Mrs. Eunice Lucia of Waterbury. The deceased was born at Bathurst, Ont., Oct. 21, 1829.
The funeral services were held from her late home near Garfield Thursday at 2 p.m., Rev. I. P. Booth, officiating. Internment was in the old cemetery in the family lot. The relatives, whom are numerous including a large number of grandchildren, have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. Excepting the children, Mr. Belville's only living relative is a brother, Frank, of Bradford.

1907 Lewis Belville died in September. His death record states that his age was 82 years, 4 months, 13 days, and that he died on September 23 in Morristown, Lamoille, Vermont. His memorial inscription states that he died on September 26. The death record states that he was widowed, was born in Canada, died of "organic disease of heart," his father was Enos Belville, and both of his parents were born in Canada. [13] Lewis was buried with his wife Mary Noe at Riverside Cemetery, Morristown, Lamoille County, Vermont, USA. [14] Their memorial inscription states,

Lewis Belville, May 10, 1826, Sept. 26, 1907. Mary Noe, his wife, Oct. 21 1829, Sept. 23, 1903.
