A biosketch of John Torrison reports [1] [2]:

John Torrey, name changed to John Torreyson, wife Ann Reid, m. about 1793 at Baltimore, Md. He was b. Jan. 4, 1757 at Boston, Mass. and d. about 1828 in Loudon Co., Va. Lived in Baltimore and in Langley, Va.; iron founder. She d. Aug. 29, 1843 near Leesburg, Loudon Co., Va.; sister of Rev. Nelson Reid.

Children: John Torreyson, b. 1794; d. Aug 12, 1824; unm. A, Mary Anna Torreyson 2, Lewis Torreyson 3, Joseph Torreyson 4, Samuel Torreyson 5, William Torreyson 6, Isaac Torreyson B, Rebecca Torreyson C, Hannah Torreyson, b. 1820; d.y.

… His wife Ann lived in Leesburg, Va. until her death in August, 1843 supported by her two wealthy brothers, Rev. Nelson and Robert Reid and by her sons.

1796-1801 John Torrison was taxed in Truro parish (or generally on a list different from the Reed family), Fairfax County, Virginia. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

1807 John Torrison was named in a court proceeding in Fairfield County, Virginia. [9]

1810 John Torreyson lived in Dumfries Twp, Prince William County, Virginia in a household with males: 4 (under 10), 2 (10 thru 15), and 1 (45 and over); and females: 1 (under 10), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (45 and over). [10]

1824 John Torreyson, Jr died on August 12, 1824 (aged 29) and was buried at Old Bethesda Methodist Cemetery, Unison, Loudoun County, Virginia. [11]

1828 John Torreyson, Sr died on August 12, 1824 and was buried at Old Bethesda Methodist Cemetery, Unison, Loudoun County, Virginia. [12]

1830 Families of Isaac Torrison (in Union Twp, listed adjacent to John Payne) and Samuel Torrison (both age 20-30) and Lewis Torreyson (age 30-40) lived in Loudoun County, Virginia. A female, age 60-70, lived with Isaac Torrison, perhaps widow Ann. [13]

1840 Wm Torrison lived in District 1, Loudoun County, Virginia in a household with free white males: 1 (15 thru 19) and 1 (30 thru 39); and free white females: 1 (20 thru 29) and 1 (60 thru 69, perhaps widow Ann Reed Torrison); and 2 slaves. [14]

A biosketch of a descendant reports [15]:

A native of Virginia, he [B.W. Torreyson] was born in Hillsboro on the 10th of December, 1855, and is a son of James W. and Sarah A. (Stone) Torreyson. On the maternal side he is a descendant of Thomas Stone, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. His great-grandfather, Edward Cunerd, a native of Virginia, was turned from the Quaker church, of which for many years he was a member, because of a marriage be contracted. He served in the Revolutionary war under "Lighthorse Harry" Lee and participated in many of the important conflicts of that war. The paternal great-grandfather, John Torreyson, was also born in Virginia, where he resided throughout his entire life. Lewis Torreyson, the grandfather, was born in Virginia and there achieved substantial success as a farmer. blacksmith and wagonmaker. He had six sons and each of them became skilled in their father’s trade, being trained by him at an early age. The maternal grandfather, a tanner by trade, was born and died in Virginia. For many years he conducted a tannery at Hillsboro, later Snickersville and now Bluemont, Virginia.

James W. Torreyson, the father of B. W., whose name initiates this review, was born in Hillsboro, Virginia, in 1829 and engaged in farming and blacksmithing until his demise in 1905. During the Civil war he was arrested and imprisoned by both Federal and Confederate soldiers, but was fortunate in securing an immediate release. Mrs. Torreyson was born in Hillsboro, Virginia, in 1833, and her death occurred in 1893. Both she and her husband were consistent members of the Methodist church and prominent and highly respected citizens of the community. Four children were born to their union: B. W., whose name initiates this review; Carrie, the wife of E. M. Pursley an automobile man of Washington, D. C.; Ida, who married Paxson James and died in 1893; and Maude, who died in infancy.

1857 William Torreysen, widow age 51, and Mary Simpson were married on March 17. William Torreysen was a son of John Torreysen and Ann Torreysen. [16]
