Notes for Nelson Reed and Rebecca Sanders

1733 Rebecca Sanders, child of James and Eliza Sanders, was born on February 17. [1] Her paternal grandfather was Robert Sanders. She was baptized on April 15, 1734 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [2]

1752-1761 The births of several children of Nelson and Rebecca Reed were recorded in Anne Arundel County, Maryland: James (1752), Nelson (1753), Elizabeth (1757), Rebecca Ann (1759), Robert Sanders (1761). The births have been reported both in Westminster parish and All Hallows parish [3]. [See the notes of children.]

1753 Nelson Reed, son of Nelson and Rebecca Reed, was born on November 28 in All Hollows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [4]

1759 Rebecca Ann Read, daughter of Nelson and Rebecca Reed, was born on October 7. She was baptized at Westminster Parish, Anne Arundel, Maryland. [5]

1760-62 A biosketch of son Nelson Reed Jr reported that Nelson Sr and Rebecca Reed moved from Ann Arundel County, Maryland to Fairfax County, Virginia, when Nelson Reed, Jr was 9 years old. John Reed, a brother of Nelson Reed Sr, stayed in Ann Arundel County, and both Nelson Sr and John had part ownership of Clark's Inheritance, which they had inherited from their father William Reed. Based on documents cited here, it appears that both John and Nelson later sold their shares of that land to William Groves. Rebecca's family, including father James Sanders and brother Robert Sanders remained in Ann Arundel County. Rebecca Reed was named later in both of their wills. [6]

1768 Nelson Reed witnessed the will, dated September 4, of James Robertson (relation unknown) in Fairfax County, Virginia. [7]

1771 James Sanders, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, named daughter Rebecca Reed as an heir in his will, dated May 31. [8]

1776 William Reed (1 male, 3 females, 8 children, all white) and James Sanders (2 males, 1 female, 3 children, and 3 black people) were taxed at All Hallows Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [9]

1783 Nelson Read was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [13]

1783 Nelson Read was taxed for Clarks Inheritance, pt, 100 acres, Anne Arundel Road River Hundred, Maryland. William Read (likely Nelson's brother William, since William Reed Sr, who was taxed for this land in 1750, had died by 1772) was taxed for Clarks Inheritance, 80 acres. James Sanders was taxed for Clarks Inheritance, pt, 103 acres. George and John Dent were also on the land [George Dent, perhaps an ancestor, was named on the original 1663 grant for the land]. [14]

1784 Nelson Read was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [15]

1785 Nelson Reed appeared on the list of James Wren for the census for Fairfax County, Virginia with 7 white souls and 1 dwelling. [16]

1787 Nelson Read was taxed in Fairfax County, Virginia. [19]

1787 John Reed sold his part of a tract of land in Ann Arundel County called Clarks Inheritance, to Solomon Groves, both planters of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, on December 4. The tract was to the east of the spring, heretofore mentioned by William Reed Senior, in a devise of his last will and testament in favor of his son William. Witnessed by Richard Harwood Jr and Nicholas Worthington. Sibby Reed, wife of John relinquished her right of dower in the land of her own accord. [20]

1788 Nelson and Sanders Reed were taxed together in Fairfax County, Virginia. [21]

1789 Nelson Reed, James Reed, Robert Reed, Joseph Simpson, and William Swink, of Fairfax County, Virginia, purchased land, on March 11, from Henry and Matilda Lee, of Westmoreland County. The land was in Fairfax County, below the lower falls of the Potomack and was called "Three Fishing Stands" [22] [23]:

1799 Nelson Reed was taxed in Fairfax County. [38]

1802 Nelson Reed Senior of Fairfax County, Virginia made a note for ten thousand pounds to William Groves of Anne Arundel County in Maryland. This note bound him, his executors, and his heirs to pay the note. The obligation would be void if the title to the land called "Clark's Inheritance" in Anne Arundel were transferred by Nelson Reed to George Groves. Signed and sealed on 7 June, anno domini one thousand eight hundred and Two (the year appears to have been removed and written over, perhaps changed from 1796) by Nelson Reed Senior in the presence of Nelson Reed Junior and James Reed. (One interpretation is that Nelson Reed sold the land to Thomas Groves and received payment but did not transfer the title, so the note was written to assure either eventual transfer of title or repayment of ten thousand pounds). [Photocopy, 1802 Nelson Reed note for 10 thousand pounds.]

1807 Solomon Groves wrote a complaint against the estate of Nelson Reed disputing the payment and lack of title to Clark's Inheritance. The complaint named Nelson Reed's sons Nelson, James, William, Sanders, Isaac, and John Reed and daughters Rebeckah Lloyd the wife of Richard Lloyd, Ann Torrison the wife of John Torrison, Dinah Dudley the wife of Jospeh Dudley, Jane Buley the wife of Mahlon Buley, and grandchildren by a daughter Elizabeth who married one Joseph Marle, to wit Rebeckah Lawrence, a widow, Hannah Marle, Elizabeth Marle, and David Marle. Research Notes:
