Research Notes:

The Barnardiston pedigree published in Crisp's Visitation of England and Wales [11] shows Thomas Barnardiston (1594/5-1682), the youngest brother of Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston (c. 1589-1653), had ten children by his second wife: daughters Mary, Anne, Sarah, Lydia, Susan, and Abigail and sons Thomas, Nathaniel, Samuel, and John. The pedigree indicates that Samuel married and had children but does not name his wife or children.

Samuel Barnardiston's sister Abigail married London physician Josiah Clerke (bio in Oxford DNB). Abigail and Josiah had one surviving daughter Elizabeth who married Richard Willshaw. In his will, dated 23 April 1709, Josiah Clerke bequeathed property called Beavers in Hertford to "my cozen John Barnardiston Sonn of my Br Samuell Barnardiston" as a residual legatee in case Josiah's daughter Elizabeth did not have heirs. Resigned 17 August 1710, and proved 14 October 1714.[12]

John son of Samuel Barnardiston is the John Barnardiston, born 22 April 1683 and baptized the same day at Saint Giles Cripplegate, London, son of Samuel Barnardiston and his wife Jane. Samuel named his daughter Abigail. His grandson Joseph named one of his son's Josiah, perhaps in honor of Samuel's sister Abigail and her husband Josiah.

The will of Josiah and Abigail's grandson, Clerke Willshaw, indicates he had no children. Clerke Willshaw bequeathed the manor of Bevers in Hertford to the above John Barnardiston's son Joseph, who was also the executor of Clerke Willshaw's will. In a codicil, Clerke Willshaw revoked some of his other bequests and gave additional land called Marlowes and Cotterells to Joseph. Bevers, Marlowes, and Cotterells were among the lands of the estate of the late Joseph Barnardiston to be sold at auction in 1781 according to newspaper advertisements.

Samuel Barnardiston's siblings are well documented in his brother Nathaniel's will who names both Samuel and Thomas and several of the sisters and their husbands. Nathaniel stipulated that if his brother Thomas named a son Nathaniel, that son was to receive a bequest at age 15, and in default, if his brother Samuel named a son Nathaniel, that son was to get the bequest at age 15. Thomas baptized a son Nathaniel 23 December 1681. Samuel and wife Jane baptized a son Nathan' on 7 December 1681 at St. Giles Cripplegate. The record states "Nathan' S of Sam' Barnardiston Gentle' & of Jane bo and Christ Decem' 7." Most given names are abbreviated in the other entries in the same section of the book of baptisms. Thus, it is likely that Nathan' in the record was an abbreviation for Nathaniel. Samuel's son Nathan' died the following September. The other Nathaniel's death was reported in the following newspaper notice in 1771: "Died On Sunday Nathaniel Barnardiston, Esq.; age 90, the oldest Stock-Broker in London." [13] This Nathaniel bequeathed 10 guineas to Joseph, calling him "Mr. Joseph Barnardiston stationer." Other legatees were specified as sons, grandsons, nephews, etc. in Nathaniel's will. (Joseph Barnardiston stationer was Nathaniel's first cousin once removed as Joseph's father John and Nathaniel were cousins.)

Joseph Barnardiston's only surviving child was his daughter Mary who married her father's business partner Samuel Howes, so the male Barnardiston line in this branch ended with Joseph. The Barnardiston male line continued in the line from Samuel's oldest brother Thomas through his son Nathaniel mentioned above. Other Barnardiston lines (from Sir Nathaniel the patriot, Sir Samuel the roundhead, and George of Northill, Bedford) became extinct in the male line during the 1700s.

1645 A Thomas Adams was assessed 1s. 1d. for 2 acres of land in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, on December 6. [14]

A Thomas Adams and a John Adams each had several children baptized in Ware 1635-1652: [15] [16]

1635 Susan Adam, daughter of Thomas, was baptized on March 8.
1637 Richard Adams, son of Thomas, was baptized on April 27.
1639 Thomas Adams, son of Thomas, was baptized on December 27.
1641 Francis Adams, son of Thomas, was baptized on August 8.
1647/48 Mary Adams, daughter of Thomas, was baptized on March 22

1637 Henry Adams, son of John, was baptized on March 22.
1649 Mary Adams, daughter of John, was baptized on March 29.
1650 Sarah Adams, daughter of John, was baptized on October 31.

The earliest register of Hoddesdon starts in the 1840s.
