Notes for Jacob Baltzly and Elizabeth Herr

1693 Jacob Baltzli, was born on August 30, 1693, in Jebsheim, Alsace. In his birth record in the Catholic church records at Jebsheim, his parents were called Anabaptists and his father died the same morning that he was born. [1]

1736 Descendants of Abraham Herr Senior, including Elizabeth wife of Jacob Batzel, were parties to a deed. Abraham (eldest son), Rudy, and John Hare (all sons of Abraham Herr Senior) and Barbara wife of David Martin, and Elizabeth wife of Jacob Batzel, yeoman of Lancaster County (daughters of Abraham Herr Senior), granted a 150 acre tract in Lancaster County, to Christian Hare (son of Abraham Herr Senior). David and Samuel Herr were not named in the text of the deed, but witnesses attested to their signatures. A subsequent deed, dated 1800, indicates that David and Samuel were parties to the deed and were also sons of Abraham Herr, Sr. The deeds involved parts of a 600 acre tract of land in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania which had been patented by Abraham Hare Sr, on November 30, 1717 [2]. These deeds are the only evidence I know of that might identify Elizabeth Herr, daughter of Abraham Herr, as the wife of this Jacob Baltzly. Other secondary sources for this relationship might perhaps also rely upon this evidence. [3] [4] [5]

1736 Several descendants of Abraham Herr, including Elizabeth wife of Jacob Batzol, were parties to a deed. Abraham's sons: Abraham, Rudy, and John Hare and daughters: Barbara wife of David Martin, and Elizabeth wife of Jacob Batzol, yeoman of Lancaster County, granted a 150 acre tract in Lancaster County, to son Christian Hare. Abraham Herr Senior had died and divided the land into 150 acre tracts. Some of Abraham's heirs, named in this deed, sold their shares to Christian for 10 pounds each. The deed was dated May 18, 1736. Abraham, Rudy, and Hans Herr signed the deed in German script. Jacob and Elizabeth Batzol signed with their marks. Two other signatures of Samuel and David Herr were attested to by witnesses. Signatures were affirmed by witnesses on March 25, 1738. The deed was recorded on May 19, 1798. [6]

1800 Abraham Herr Jr and wife Feronica sold three tracts of land to Henry Kauffman, on March 6. One of the tracts was the land described in the 1736 deed. This 1800 deed repeated many of the facts of the 1736 deed. The first tract, originally in the township of Strasburg, was now in the township of Lancaster, Lancaster County. A 600 acre tract had been patented by Abraham Herr, Sr, who had died leaving issue 8 children, to wit, Abraham Herr (his eldest son), Rudy Herr, Christian Herr, John Herr, Barbara the wife of David Martin, Elizabeth the wife of Jacob Batzel, Samuel Herr, and David Herr. The other heirs granted their rights, to 295 acres of the land, to Abraham Herr (eldest son), in a deed dated May 18, 1736. Abraham Herr (eldest son) and wife Anna, then by the name of Abraham Herr Sr, granted 246 acres of the 295 acre tract to Abraham Herr Jr (party to this deed). Abraham Herr (eldest son) and wife, alias Annely, had sold 36 acres of the 295 acre tract to Peter Musselman on April 4, 1746, which was the second of the three tracts described in the current deed. The deed includes a description of a third tract, which descended through heirs of Peter Musselman to Henneberger, who died and whose heirs sold the tract to Abraham Herr Jr. The deed was witnessed by Henry Dering and Christian Herr. [7]

1744 Jacob Balsley received a warrant for 112 acres in Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. John Charles received a patent for the tract in 1808. The survey map recorded adjacent land owned by Samuel Blunston, John Hurry [Furee?], and the Proprieters [8] [9] [10] [11] [Photocopy, Survey map showing Jacob Baltzly's land on right in upper third.] [Photocopy, Survey C9-92 map of Jacob Baltzly's tract.] [Photocopy, Survey A89-227 map of John Furee tract adjacent to Jacob Baltzly and Henry Strickler.] [12]

1744-58 Jacob Baltzly was taxed in Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [13]

1751 Jacob Baltzy was taxed in Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. [14] [15]

1753 Jacob Baltzly received a warrant for 50 acres in Hempfield Manor, Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County on August 17. The survey, dated 1753, recorded 68 acres. The back of the survey map recorded the name as Balsley with the name Allsop crossed out. [16] [17] The tract was adjacent to his own land [perhaps the warrant of 1744, in which case, this tract would be the tract of John Furree] and a tract of Henry Strickler. [18]. 1753 Jacob Baltzly's sons, Henry and Joseph, have been reported to be twins. [21]

1756 Henry Strickler warranted 40 acres in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, on May 18. Jacob Baltzly patented the land for 85 acres. [22] [23] The tract was adjacent to Jacob Baltzly's warrant of 1753, Philip Zimmer [24], Henry Strickler, Mary Allison, Michael Soon, and a vacant lot.

1758 Jacob Paltzly was taxed in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [25]

1760 Land of Jacob Balsley, in Pigeon Hills (between Hanover, Abbotstown, and Spring Grove, Pennsylvania), Paradise Twp, York County, was shown, on November 15, as adjacent to land purchased by Nicholas Feuerstein from Frederick Eichelberger, near tracts of John Heidler, John Emich, Lawrence McMullen, and Nicholas Bittinger [26]. Two other adjacent tracts were owned by Adam Blyer and Gotlieb Priechner [Briegner].

1767 Jacob Baltzly, a farmer, purchased land in Paradise Twp, York County, Pennsylvania in 1767.

1773 The will of Jacob Baltzley was proved on June 7, in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania. The will was dated May 3, 1773 and named executors Joseph Baltzly and Nicholas Feyerston and children Joseph, Henry, Elizabeth, Barbara, Anna, and Mary. The will stated "Bequest my two sons Joseph and Henry my malting plantation whereon we now live. To have and to hold forever between them, upon the provision they shall pay between them, one hundred pounds lawful money in annual payments, as it follows in two years after my death. With the both to pay yearly sixteen pounds and eight pence lawful money, with the first payment unto my daughter Elizabeth Baltzly, that is intermarried with George Herman. And the second payment unto my second daughter, Barbara Baltzly, that is intermarried with Daniel Bauser. And the third payment unto my youngest daughter, Anna Mary Baltzly, and then so on until the hundred pounds is paid in full." No wife was mentioned in the will. Frederick Wolf of Berwick Township, York County, Pennsylvania was appointed guardian of Ann Mary - age 15. Executors Joseph Baltzly and Nicolas Feyerston. [27]

1773 Jacob Balsle died and gave land to two of his sons Joseph and Henry Baltzly in his will dated May 3, 1773, as described in a deed dated 1785. [28] [29]

1773 Ann Baltzly, age 15, orphan of Jacob Baltzly, petitioned that Frederick Wolff of Berwick Twp be appointed as her guardian, on September 11, at the York County Orphans' Court. [30]

1775 Joseph Baltzly, acting executor for the will of Jacob Baltzly, reported a balance of £114.15.1, on June 8, at the York County Orphans' Court. [31]

1785 Joseph Baltzly, for the estate of Jacob Baltzly, sold land in Paradise Twp, York County, to Jacob Doll. Nicholas Noel had sold the land to Jacob Balsle on May 27, 1767. Jacob Balsle died and gave the land to two of his sons Joseph and Henry Baltzly in his will dated May 3, 1773. Henry sold his share of the land to Joseph on February 15, 1783. [32] [33]

Research Notes:

The relationship, if any, to Jacob Baltzly [34], who married the widow Veronica Forrer, is unknown.

Richard Warren Davis reports that Jacob Baltzly (person B743) married Elizabeth, who might be Elizabeth Herr, born c 1705. [35]

The immigrants with names matching Jacob Baltzly that I have found all arrived after Jacob Baltzly warranted land in 1744. When did he immigrate to America? What happened to the Hempfield tract after the move to Paradise, York? Is Jacob Baltzly of Hempfield the same as Jacob Baltzly of Paradise?

Daniel Bauser has been reported as the husband of daughter Anna Mary Baltzly. [36], which disagrees with the will abstract, which names him as the spouse of daughter Barbara.

1766 Letters testamentary for the will of Peter Baltzly of Berks County, were issued, on October 27, to Peter Gut and Nicholas Schantz. [37]

1769 Elizabeth Baltzly, widow of Peter Baltzly of Brecknock Twp, Berks County petitioned the Orphans Court concerning guardians for children Peter, Anna, Maria, Christian, Elizabeth, John, and Jacob. The court appointed Jacob Kern, Wolfgang Hack, and Nicholas Madery as guardians. [38]

The Catholic records of Jebsheim have not yet been digitized. They might be soon. [40] [41]

Henry Balsley (28 Sep 1799 - 12 Sep, 1845), who died in Perry Twp, Ohio, has been named as a son of Jacob Balsley II. [42] Jacob Balsley II is reported to be a son of Jacob Baltzer (Baltzli) I, of Holland, who immigrated on the Ship St. Andrew in 1752. The will of Jacob Baltzer I, probated September 11, 1809, and of wife Frances, probated January 23, 1828 are mentioned. [43] Jacob Balsly I appears to be a different person than the Jacob Baltzly in the notes above. Did this researcher know of the will of Jacob Baltzly, proved in 1773 in York County? Which Jacob was a son of Uhlrich?
