Introduction

In this course we explore and critique methods for conducting causal inference in the social sciences. These methods will be drawn from a wide variety of disciplines, including economics, education, epidemiology, psychology, sociology and statistics. Particular attention will be paid to causal inference from quasi-experimental and observational research designs.

On Thursdays, all three courses will meet as one group to discuss and critique papers about causal inference in the social sciences. Participants will be divided into teams, each team representing a variety of disciplines. Each team will be responsible for leading one or more Thursday discussions. A faculty mentor will work intensively with his/her team so as to assist the team in leading a high quality discussion. Additionally, well-known researchers will be invited to give seminars to the Thursday class.

On Tuesdays, the three courses will meet separately so as to allow students to delve more deeply into relevant issues specific to their disciplines.

This course is sponsored by the Michigan Methodology Seminar. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and graduate students in several related disciplines at Michigan to be engaged in discussing cutting-edge issues in social science methodology.
