LINGUISTICS COLLECTIONS
The linguistics collections at Hatcher are selected by T. Yamakawa who maintains this page and can be contacted for class instructional sessions, in-depth reference assistance, or with suggestions for books, journals, electronic resources to acquire, or sites to add to this page.

MIRLYN AND LAN RESOURCES

MIRLYN is the University of Michigan University Libraries online public catalog. The system is the largest in the country with over three million records.

Searching for locally held resources in linguistics generally begins in the MIRLYN on-line system. MIRLYN includes the catalog of University Library holdings in all formats (MCAT), catalogs from other local and regional library from which holdings can be obtained either through U-M borrowing privileges or interlibrary loan (REMOTE), and indexes to journal and periodical articles that may or may not be held by the University Library (INDEXES)

Beginning in January, 1996, a new LAN network will make selected bibliographic resources available which were previously available only through CD-ROM. They will be accessible through public work stations or any ethernet connection on campus.

CD-ROM INDEXES AND OTHER NON-NETWORKED BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESOURCES

Some indexes to scholarly literature in linguistics are not available through the campus network but can be consulted on-site at the University Library. Examples of CD-ROMS of interest to linguists and not yet accessible via the network include:
Statistical Masterfile (Documents Center--Hatcher)
Lexis/Nexis (Information Center & Documents Center)

A complete list of campus CD-ROM and other electronic bibliographic resources is maintained and regularly updated by Library staff.

PAPER INDEXES, BIBLIOGRAPHIES AND REFERENCE TOOLS

Paper indexes to periodical articles often extend back earlier in time than the coverage available in electronic form.

Bibliographies generally cover books, book chapters, special collections, as well as periodical articles on a topic

The Reference collections in Hatcher and Shapiro cover core resources in almost all fields with emphasis on the Social Sciences and Humanities. A list of major resources in Linguistics available for consultation in the Hatcher Reading Room is updated quarterly by Library staff.
