In presidential year studies, this question referred to the
presidential election held 4 years prior; in non-presidential year
studies, this question referred to the presidential election held 2
years prior.
For 1952, VCF9027 code 9 contains 9 cases of respondents who replied
that they "thought" they had voted Democratic in 1948 and 3 cases of
respondents who replied that they "thought" they had voted Republican
in 1948. Also, in the original 1956 dataset all cases (unknown
number) of Rs who only "thought" they voted for any particular
candidate in 1952 were combined with other missing data: these cases
are coded 9 here.
In the original 1952 dataset, 1948 presidential votes for two
specified nonmajor party candidates were individually coded, and there
also appeared a combination category labeled "other or NA or DK who"
(9 cases). Rs who said they had voted for the specified nonmajor
party candidates in 1948 have been coded 5 here, while Rs from the
combination category of the original 1952 dataset have been coded 3
here.
In 1952-1960,1964-1972,1976,1980, if R answered the filter,
"In the elections for president since you have been old enough to
vote, would you say that you have voted in all of them, most of
them, some of them, or none of them?"
with "none of them" or answered that s/he was never before able to
vote because s/he was previously not a citizen or old enough, then
this question was not asked, and 0 has been coded here. In addition,
in 1956, 1960, 1976 and 1980, if it was NA whether R had ever voted,
then this question was not asked and 9 has been coded here. In 1968,
if R DK whether s/he had ever voted, then this question was not asked
and R is coded 9 here.
In 1962, 1982, 1988, 1990 and 1992 no filter was used, but Rs who did
not vote in the previous presidential election because of age or
citizenship ineligibility (or for any other reason) were simply coded
"did not vote" and are coded 0 here.
NOTE for 1956, 1958, 1960, and 1964: The original codebooks'
documentation during these years stated that residents of Washington
D.C. (for some unknown reason) were INAP for this question; however,
in checking the actual data it appears that some Washington D.C.
residents were INAP while others were not. Any responses to this
question from Washington D.C. residents during these years have been
retained in this variable. Unfortunately, the remaining Washington
D.C. residents who appeared in the original data during these years as
INAP for this question (and whose vote in the previous presidential
election was NA and who should have been coded here as 9) were also
combined with another type of INAP Rs, those who were INAP because
they had never before voted due to prior ineligibility. It is
therefore unclear whether the latter set of Washington D.C. cases in
fact appeared in INAP during these years for this question because
they were from Washington D.C. or whether they were INAP because they
had actually never voted before. Rs who had never voted before are
coded 0 in VCF9027: this recoding scheme necessitated for 1956-
1960,1964 the inclusion of the INAP Washington D.C. cases about whom
it was somewhat unclear whether or not "has never voted" actually
applies:
