        In all presidential-year studies except 1960 this was a pre var.      
                                                                              
        In 1990 and later only, questions about religious affiliation were    
        preceded by the filter question, 'Lots of things come up that keep    
        people from attending religous services even if they want to.         
        Thinking about your life these days, do you ever attend religious     
        services, apart from occasional weddings, baptisms or funerals?'      
        (SEE VCF0130).  THIS CHANGE HAS HAD SOME EFFECT ON DISTRIBUTIONS:     
        SEE AN INCREASE IN THE PROPORTION CODED 4.                            
                                                                              
        In 1952-1988, just 1 variable appeared in each study's data and       
        codebook; this single variable SUMMARIZED R's responses to that year's
        entire set of questions [see VCF0129 for texts of questions asked     
        1960-1988 in addition to those questions appearing above; in 1952-    
        1958, no questions other than those listed above were asked] and      
        contained a full set of religion-denomination codes.  For 1952-1988,  
        CDF var VCF0128 has been collapsed from the religion-denomination     
        codes appearing in the single study variable. Beginning in 1990,      
        however, each question listed above (as well as each question asked   
        in addition to--expanding upon- the questions listed above) had       
        its own responses coded into an individual variable; a summary        
        variable of full codes was also constructed.  For 1990 and            
        thereafter, in the interest of comparability, CDF VCF0128 has been    
        collapsed from the summary variable of full codes in a similar        
        manner as in previous years.                                          
                                                                              
        In 1992, this question was not part of the short-form questionnaire;  
        for short-form 'panel' cases, however, 1990 study data were           
        incorporated into the religion summary variable.
