I am going to read a list of words and phrases people may use to
describe political figures... (1996: For each, tell me whether the
word or phrase describes the candidate I name.)

Think about <the Republican presidential candidate>. The first phrase
        is "intelligent."
In your opinion, does the phrase "intelligent" describe <the
Republican presidential candidate> extremely well, quite well, not too
well or not well at all?

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TRAIT - INTELLIGENT

        USE WEIGHT VARIABLE VCF0009/VCF0009A/VCF0009B.

For 1984, this is the pre version of this question.

Republican Presidential candidate trait questions referred to Ronald
Reagan in 1980 and 1984, to George Bush in 1988 and 1992, and to
        Robert Dole in 1996.

In 1996, Republican Presidential candidate traits were asked in random
order. In addition, randomization occurred for the order in which the
3 major Presidential candidate names were administered for the set of
traits and affects questions; note that for each candidate traits
preceded affects and all traits and affects questions were
administered for one candidate before questions concerning the next
        candidate were begun.

1996 special note: this question was asked about the incumbent
Democratic Presidential candidate but not about the challenger
        Republican Presidential candidate.
