The Great Reikai Dating Game

Or: What can go wrong will go *horribly* wrong!

A Romantic Comedy in Many Parts
by Amparo Bertram and Jenn

George, assistant to Koenma and all-around beleaguered oni, was walking down the hall with a stack of wobbling files. It was his job to make sure that this new pet project of Enma Daioh's was treated with the delicacy and care that it required. After all, it had taken months of exhaustive research to put each person's profile together, and then their qualities and characteristics had to be carefully weighed to determine whose soul would be mated to whom. In this way, the Reikai personnel would get a jump start on all the paperwork involved in sorting out souls after death, because now they could do it before the individuals died and were waiting impatiently to reincarnate. It was an extremely secret plan, and George had the rather envied task of seeing that the files were placed in a specially prepared vault where they wouldn't be disturbed after Enma had painstakingly matched the people on his list.

George was an honest oni, and he was diligently resisting the temptation to use his position to sneak a peek at the files to see who had been paired with whom. Except...he happened to know that Enma had used Botan in his research, and the oni was very curious to see whom his lord had matched the spunky guide with. Yet, the one brief glance proved to be his downfall as he failed to notice the "wet floor" sign that had just been placed on the now gleaming flagstones.

With time only for a suspiciously girly sounding scream, George soon found himself lying comfortably on his back among the files with their scattered contents, staring up at the ceiling. Hmm, someone should get those cobwebs.

Then reaction set in. Oh, no! Enma-sama will *kill* me! The frantic oni scrambled to his feet and surveyed the damage. Well, that's not too bad. I think I can sort that ou—

Before he could even finish his thought, someone farther down the hall thoughtfully opened a door and allowed a gust of fresh, cool air into the passage. "Nooo!" George moaned, watching in dismay as what was once a correctable situation become an example in comic farce. Hearing distant footsteps and realizing that he had been given strict orders *never* to allow someone to see the confidential files, George started grabbing papers at random and tossing them into folders. There was simply no time to try to put some order to them, and he would have no way of knowing what was right in the first place.

Clutching the files to his chest and running down the hall toward the vault with its three lock system, witnesses would have heard George's hysterical mutterings of, "I'm dead, dead, dead! He'll banish me, or *worse*, He'll never promote me, and I'll have to remain Koenma's assistant *forever*!"

But that was if there had actually *been* witnesses, and thankfully, for George's sake, there were none.
