Tall Blue Drinks

The Web Page

Hello, and welcome to a page devoted to the quest for the perfect blue drink. If you're like us, the title* caught your eye and sparked your curiosity. "Tall Blue Drink"—sounds good, but what exactly does it contain? What shade of blue? Is it fruity? Bitter? Sour? Does it go well with peanuts and chips, or is it an after-dinner indulgence? Is it best suited for drowning your sorrows or living it up with your friends?

We set out to answer these questions, and since we thought others might benefit from our experiences, this page is the result. One word of caution before you proceed, however: The recipes provided are alcoholic, so if you have not yet reached your country's legal drinking age, we strongly advise you to omit the alcohol if you decide to try any.

Moon Quake

The Moon Quake is essentially an ice cream milkshake with an extra kick. To achieve the color, we used the MSU Dairy Store's "Blue Moon." Any comparable ice cream could substitute.

Ingredients

  • 5 large scoops Blue Moon ice cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 ounces creme de cacao

Blend ingredients until no ice cream chunks remain. Serve in tall glasses.

Our first attempt to reach blueness, the Moon Quake is fun to create and consume in a group situation. Its sweet, creamy flavor makes it well suited to stand on its own, and the nature of the shake is perfect for a gathering of friends on a warm, lazy afternoon.

    Rum Raspberry

The name says it all. Building on the previous concoction, the Rum Raspberry is a reduced dairy alternative. This time the blue derives from Baskin-Robbins' Blue Raspberry Sherbet.

    Ingredients:

  • Two pints Blue Raspberry
  • Two 12-ounce cans of Sprite
  • Rum to taste

    Blend thoroughly and serve.

This drink is more tangy than its predecessor and can be accented with salty snacks. One warning: The bright blue dye quickly coats your mouth, with often humorous results (depending on the quantity of rum used...), and it can also travel virtually undiluted through your digestive system.

    Raspberry Splash

In a step toward something more conventional, this replaces the raspberry sherbet with blue raspberry drink and ice.

    Ingredients:

  • Four tall glasses blue raspberry drink
  • Eight ice cubes
  • Six ounces rum

Pour blue raspberry and rum over ice and serve.

Despite a beautifully vivid blue color, this drink is not a favorite. The flavor, described as "an alcoholic freezer pop" by one member of the team, is not distinctive enough to make a positive impression. If the alcohol is what you're after, this is the quickest cocktail so far, but there are better options in the fun department.
