EVOLUTION OF MICRO-CRACKS BY SURFACE DIFFUSION IN THE PRESENCE OF AN EXTERNAL STRESS FIELD

SUMMARY

In this project, we have contributed in the research field of the evolution of microcrack under tensile stress by using finite element methods and numerical simulations. By incorporating MATLAB and ANSYS, we have showed that the microcracks evolve in such a manner to decrease the surface energy and the strain energy. This result can be further extended to utilize applied stress to control the size and shape of a microcrack.
