From the simulations in MATLAB, we have obtained
results in 4 different cases.
- Self Healing is when there is a short
groove in the material (Groove Width : Groove Depth = 1:1). As predicted
from the model section, the groove heals itself and will revert back to a straight
line on the surface after time.
- Necking is when there is a deeper groove
in the material (Groove Width : Groove Depth = 1:8) but it is not quite deep enough to allow for a void to form. Our simulation shows that necking occurs but a void does not.
- Void Formation occurs when the groove is deep enough (Groove Width : Groove Depth = 1:10) to allow the sides to come together and for a void to break away from the rest of the top surface.
- Multiple Necking occurs when there is a very deep groove in the material (Groove Width : Groove Depth = 1:40).
