Introduction

As a part of the Nano/Micro Structure Evolution class taught by Professor Wei Lu at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. Our project uses the energy framework studied in class to develop a method for 2-D surface diffusion and migration for a droplet. This was simulated both with and without a constant electric field. By modeling these distinct scenarios we show the effects of surface energy on surface migration and diffusion and how it can be applied.
The goals of this project were:

  • Develop a working model in MATLAB capable of simulating the impact of surface energy on a droplet’s shape.
  • Show the effects of a constant applied field on a droplet’s shape.

This work is of great relevance and has many applications to the field of micro-fluidics.
