Nicholas Christopher
A new epic poem by Nicholas Christopher, the author of A Trip to the Stars, Atomic Field and Franklin Flyer, Ultima Thule is the story of a bold adventurer on a journey to the very end of the world, while the young queen of Sparta waits and ponders her fate. Thoughtful and exciting by turns, Ultima Thule is the work of a master a the top of his form.

Nicholas Christopher is well-known for his many appearances in The New Yorker and The Paris Review, and is keenly appreciated by the poetic community. The late Anthony Hecht commented that “As multifaceted as Christopher’s talents as a writer are, there is a cinematic power coursing through every line.” And as Catherine McWeeney noted in a recent review: “To read Christopher’s poetry is to witness the animation of a spirit steeped in history as it sparkles to life.”

Ultima Thule has been produced at Passim Editions in a edition of thirty copies featuring the stunning woodcut art of Wesley B. Tanner. Tanner created the book with handmade Swedish paper made in the late 1950s and utilized the rare Bauer Bodoni types; when finished the multi-colored volume contained over 125 woodcuts sweeping the reader along with the action of the poem. In addition calligrapher Susan Skarsgard has drawn the woodcut lettering for the titlepage; each hard-bound copy is hand-bound in illustrated papers over cloth.
34 x 23.5 cm. 54 pages. 30 copies printed in Bauer Bodoni types on Vit Bloma handmade paper. Signed by the poet and artist, 2004. $1500 |
